Halley had to rein in her own enthusiasm when Nick's obvious excitement for pizza showed. She really needed to keep this crush of hers in check because she still didn't even know if Nick was single or not. For all she knew, he was married. She didn't have the best luck with men so it wouldn't surprise her if Nick was just being a polite neighbourhood cop.
"What? Marvel's so much better, Max!" She turned to look at the dog who was busy licking Arya's small body to even care. Halley laughed and turned back to Nick. "Arya's totally a Marvel girl. She can't stop yammering on and on about Agent Carter." Which in part was sort of the truth. Arya would sit at attention every time Halley's shows had a hint of Agent Maggie Carter.
"You couldn't." Halley shook her head, quite unaware of what she implied before turning to get the pizza out of the freezer and into the oven. She turned back to Nick and brought her mug to her lips before answering. "I'm a nurse at St. Jude's." She smiled. "A nurse and a cop being friends. Like Claire Temple and Misty Knight." She chuckled. "And I promise that's the last of the fandom references for today." She held her hands up in feign surrender.
"Also, I hope you're a fan of pepperoni. Because like...who isn't a fan of pepperoni?"

The Boy Next Door "Ha! No!" Nicholas snorted, even as she spoke of her cat being the one who preferred Marvel, he still couldn't let it stand. "Marvel is full of rip-offs from DC. I mean Iron Man is basically Batman, but more of a tool and less badass." He happened to take his superhero obsession very seriously and he knew that his geek was beginning to show. Layla would be so proud, but he quickly snapped his mouth shut to keep from spouting off anymore of his radical opinions about the hero verses. "But she can like whatever she chooses, of course." Even if it was the wrong choice, which obviously it was.
A nurse, how fitting. Not just for her, but for the way he looked at her. Like she was some kind of angel sent down to help people. But he was just going to keep that image to himself because he realized how creepy it came off in his mind, let alone out loud. "How cliche of us," Nick laughed and shook his head. "Also, you don't have to worry about your geekdom showing, I mean, at least you're not wearing minion socks. I'd say that trumps fangirling." He rubbed the back of his neck and scrunched up his nose at his own embarrassment. Next time he'd be sure to wear something a little less terrible. Perhaps some Halloween socks, at least they were usually darker and easier to hide than bright yellow and blue socks with giant eyes on them. He frowned, what had he been thinking.
"Uhm, obviously. Pepperoni is pizza's best friend, right next to cheese and stuffed crust," He realized it was really starting to show how much he loved his pizza and he patted his stomach, "However, my stomach begs to differ."

Her grin slacked when Nick slammed her beloved MCU and she gasped dramatically. "You don't mean it," she sputtered. "Stan Lee, Nick. Stan Lee." She countered, like that should convince Nick that her love for the comics was valid. "Oh my God you did not just compare Batman and Iron Man. Batman is a tortured soul with revenge being his raison d'etre. Iron Man is a witty genius who created a friggin suit made out of spare parts he found in the desert that both powers his heart and protects his body. And Nick, no nipples."
Halley had to chuckle at his socks, shaking her head. "I love them! What are you talking about?"
Her oven rang, indicating the pizza was all melted and crispy. She had mastered heating up leftover foods to a science. Halley took it out and slid it on to a plate, turning just in time to see him patting his stomach. "What are you talking about? Your body is hot!" She blurted out before pressing her lips against each other tightly, turning back to the pizza. Yep, turning around is going to make your crush not hear you calling him hot like a creeper, she thought to herself. Plating a slice, trying to ignore the heat on her cheeks, Halley turned and slid the plate over to Nick. "We're just gonna ignore my brain fart, right? Yeah, that's be great." Her voice trailed off as she stuffed her face with the pizza.

The Boy Next Door Nick opened his mouth to defend his favorite superhero again, but was caught off guard immediately when she mentioned Clooney's bat nipples. His mouth closed and he stood there for a moment trying to process what she had just said. Coming from someone like his mother or Emma even, he would expect it, but as it passed through Halley's lips, he burst out laughing. It sounded so adorable coming from her, but at the same time, she had a valid point. One that he wasn't about to admit to. Once he reined in his laughter, his hand on his stomach as his abdomen clenched and ached from nearly doubling over, he took a breath and held up both hands, "Okay, okay. But to be fair, George Clooney rocked those bat nipples! He was one smooth ass Batman." And one of Nick's guilty pleasure favorites.
"I wouldn't encourage my sock thing. It's kind of out of control already," Nick laughed, easing out of his embarrassment. Oh if she only opened his sock drawer and went through the contents, he wondered what she would think then. Between the different holiday socks he had, the comic book characters, toe socks, the whole shebang was kind of intense. And in some cases he even had matching boxers.
The, what he figured was unintended, outburst caused him to smirk, especially as she turned away from him almost immediately. Nick was a cop and around the academy he'd run into his fair share of extremes. Some of the guys worked out, only ate protein EVERYTHING and knew that they were beasts not to be crossed. Others were flabby, soft and chunky guys who liked donuts and coffee in the morning before classes and only worked out for a half hour every few days. They'd tried diets, but nothing tasted as good as that early morning donut to them. Nick liked to believe he fit somewhere in the middle. While he worked out frequently and meal prepped during the week, he also wasn't opposed to spoiling his niece with ice cream every Friday or going out with some friends from school to drink heavily and forget the pile of fries that he'd paired with beer. So for her to say he was hot, well, he didn't quite know if he agreed. If he slacked on his workout schedule, he'd turn flabby real fast.
"I dunno, I mean, you're face makes me want to ask what else you think of me," Nick smiled and winked at her before folding his pizza in half and taking a bite. # | @ | notes ulla

When Nick started laughing after a momentary silence, Halley felt her cheeks heat up more than normal and she found that she liked it when Nick laughed. Even if it was at her expense. Although if she were being honest, she did say something funny. Moreover, Nick looked amazingly adorable as his face scrunched up in a belly laugh. She found herself wanting to make him laugh more.
"Okay fine, I'll give you that. Even if the most memorable thing about that series was Seal's song. I still have it on my guilty pleasures playlist from the 90s." She giggled. It was her go to shower song.
Halley now wanted so badly to see his sock collection if this was his idea of being out of control. She had her fair share of kitten robes that her previous boyfriends have had problems with. It was cute the first time they saw her in it but she wore them every single night and it drove them insane. She briefly wondered how Nick would react to them. And then Halley balked at the factthat she was already thinking of Nick in that manner when she still didn't even know whether he was single or not. She really needed to reign in her stupid desires.
She was halfway through chewing when Nick's voice somehow changed tone and the words coming from his mouth did not match the personality she had forever matched to him. She wasn't going to lie, she dug it. And so did her lower body.
"You really don't wanna know." She said through a full mouth, laughing awkwardly. She hoped he didn't hear so she could change the subject smoothly once she had swallowed her pizza.
Her attention was pulled to Max and Arya and Halley cooed at the sight of them nuzzling each other's face. "I love unlikely animal friendships." Her eyes softened, thinking of the thousands of pictures of unlikely animal friendships she had on her computer and Tumblr blog. "They look so at ease with each other, I can't believe it's only been less than a year." She turned to look at Nick with a soft smile.

The Boy Next Door Nick closed his eyes and put a hand on his chest, "Finally, someone who understands." As his eyes opened he laughed, completely unembarrassed by his love for that song and the movie. Layla had engrained it into his brain that all things Batman are good. Unfortunately, in his excitement for learning about everything Bat-related, he'd found some not-so-good Batman related things. Bat-porn, not okay. And also not what he'd been looking for when he was twelve. But he intended to keep that one to himself for the rest of his life.
Nick's eyebrows raised when she confirmed that she had many more thoughts about him, but he let it go for the time being. The last thing he wanted to do was make her uncomfortable while she was giving him coffee and pizza, two of his favorite things. However with his rough personal life and his love life going all the way to hell, he couldn't help but think and maybe even hope a little that it was all good. He looked away from her finally and took another bite of pizza.
His eyes shifted towards the animals sitting with each other and he smiled. He hated to admit it to himself, but Max definitely preferred Halley's house to Liz's and even more so, he preferred Halley to Liz. It should have been and was a tip off that things weren't meant to last between him and his current girlfriend because Max wasn't going anywhere and Liz always hated being around him. He shook the thoughts away and let his shoulders ease back down. "Probably knew each other in their past lives," He shrugged and offered a smile to her. He couldn't believe she'd come into his life less than a year ago either. While they weren't particularly close, due to his own reservations, he had liked having her as a neighbor.
"I can still remember when you moved in. I was so certain it was going to be some little old lady named Mildred because that's what the landlord had basically made you out to be. And I was so ready to walk her across the street and make cookies with her, but then my hopes and dreams were dismantled at my own unlikely friendship with Millie because there you were, walking across the street just fine. Rendering me useless. Broke my heart, I'll have you know," Nick grinned at his elaborate and completely ridiculous story that was somewhat of a joke, but not entirely. # | @ | notes ulla

Halley realised she was staring too much at Nick when a moment passed where it was just silence and her cheeks were hurting from the huge smile she had on her face. When he looked away, she straightened her back and cleared her throat slightly. With a grin, she nodded at his assessment about their pets.
"It does look that way, doesn't it?"
Looking at Nick with surprise when he mentioned her moving in. She couldn't help but laugh at his expectation that was unmet. "Well, I have an old lady wig and a walking stick, you could still walk me across the street." She adopted a creaky old lady voice by the end of the sentence. "And I can absolutely lay out cookies whenever you're off duty." She chuckled.

The Boy Next Door When she humored him with the ways she could still be Mildred, he smiled. While it would have been pretty funny having an old lady next door, he wasn't willing to lose Halley as his neighbor. Besides, she was close enough to one that it didn't matter much. She was sweet and not hard to please as a neighbor. And whether she needed it or not, he would still be right next door to protect her or save her cat from a locked bathroom.
"Okay, the cookies, yes. You should do that, and there's no taking it back because you already offered," Man at this rate he was going to be a flabby cop. He glanced down at his stomach, he still had a few pounds he could afford to gain before it started showing. But if he was being honest with himself, he'd never let it come to that. His appearance was starting to mean more to him than most people knew, he didn't want to lose what he knew he had going for him.
Nick opened his mouth to say something more, but was cut off when his phone buzzed in his pocket. Typically when he was with company he tried to be off of it as much as possible, but when he glanced down and saw the name, he knew he couldn't ignore it without hell to be paid. "Hey, I gotta take this, I'm sorry," He frowned slightly and swiped his finger to answer. Before much of the conversation could go on, he got up from the table and ducked into another room. On the other end of the phone he was berated and part of him was curious if Halley could hear the voice on the other side. Liz always made it known when she was upset, he guessed he could just be thankful she wasn't there or at his apartment. She'd texted him earlier before the cat fiasco and he hadn't answered because he was side-tracked which immediately meant that he was cheating on her or being a jerk and she wouldn't tolerate being ignored. She didn't care if he was with his family or at work, she just demanded an answer when she texted.
And when her tone softened, she acted as though she'd been worried something bad happened to him. After his talk with Emma, Nick found himself weary of her tactics to make him stay. He answered in hushed tones, apologetic despite not doing anything wrong and when he hung up, he went back to the dining room. His whole body was deflated, along with his mood. "I'm sorry about that, I uh, I should probably get going."

She simply laughed at Nick's request, suddenly happy she could actually bake. Somehow store-bought didn't match the man she was going to present it to. Halley realised then that she was definitely in yearning territory, a place she was not terribly fond of being. Not when she still didn't know his relationship status.
Although that was immediately answered when the phone call came. She didn't see who it was but from the way Nick excused himself, Halley's hopes deflated. He wasn't single. He was just really, really nice.
Halley looked down at Max and gave him a rueful smile. "Looks like I'll only see you every other day, Max." She sighed and finished off her pizza and cleaning up. She hardly thought Nick would be coming back for more.
True to her prediction, Nick came back only to let her know he was leaving. His body language seemed to tell her otherwise but Halley was not going to delude herself into thinking it was in her favour.
She forced a bright smile on her face and nodded. "Of course. Thank you so much for saving Arya. I'll uh...see you around." She gave him a little wave before washing her hands to pat Max, who licked her face enthusiastically. "Bye, big guy." She laughed gently before standing back up to open the door for the pair.
"Thank you for entertainin' a lil ol lady you two." She adopted the old lady voice again, just to sell the performance.

The Boy Next Door Nick felt humiliated because even though he was certain that she hadn't heard the conversation that he'd just had, to be pulled away from such a fun night with his neighbor, and one of his only friends, for a conversation full of insults...terrible. And he couldn't shake the feeling even with as nice as she was being. She was so understanding and funny and he didn't want to go. But for the time being his life was dictated by this woman that didn't even care about him. She thanked him and smiled and it only made him sick. "It was my pleasure, really. Any time you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."
But what he wanted to say was that he didn't want to go. He didn't want to be pulled away by a phone call back to his apartment where he was probably just going to lounge around for the rest of the night. Liz said she'd be calling in another hour to make sure that he answered and had nothing else going on that she didn't know about. Emma's words were really starting to dawn on him and as he looked at Halley, he wondered what he'd given up over the years just to stay with Liz.
Max followed behind Nick and he gave her an awkward wave. Her imitation of Mildred made him laugh and he nodded at her, "Let me know about those cookies." And with that the door closed behind him and Max and he went back to his own home.
