The dead, but never mourned His relief was overwhelming when she turned around and kissed him. Both of his arms wrapped around her waist, sure to keep her close. When he'd reached peak dizziness, he pulled back from her lips, only to rest his forehead against hers and laugh, "I never thought that would work." Not to say that she couldn't still leave him, but he was glad that she hadn't. Will rarely made it a habit of pleading for someone not to leave him. If he had, he might have done so with his parents. He had too much dignity for that, but in this case, it was well worth losing dignity over. She was worth more than his pride and he hoped that she realized the weight of what he'd just done. If he fucked this up, he just wanted her to realize that he meant this more than he meant anything else.
Will's guard was down almost completely for now, but it was quick to go back up. At this rate, he didn't know what would happen. Maybe she would still leave after realizing that she didn't actually like his company. It was all he could expect. She'd pull herself together from the mess she was in and she'd realize that he wasn't worth the effort. He wasn't dense enough to think he wasn't a lot of effort. He was cold and distant and hated everything about his life. Except her. Which only made him hate himself more for falling so hard, knowing what was coming.
He reached up and brushed his thumb across her lower lip. At the rate he was going, he'd tell her anything she wanted to know except for the fact that he was dying. If she wanted to know him, he was giving her that chance by asking her to stay. There was no going back from that now. "I have a feeling I'm going to regret this, but, d'you remember our first project? How we were supposed to learn everything we could about the other person? Well, we both know we weren't completely committed to the assignment. How would you like to kind of do it over?"

Her arms snaked around his neck and she tiptoed to meet him halfway. Cassidy practically clung on to him as they kissed and when they parted, she was out of breath once more. His words made her chuckle. "I tend to listen to people I like." She responded. Slowly, she stood back to her height and leaned against the door again, looking up at him without removing her hand from his neck.
She bit the lip he brushed and sighed. It was dangerous just how much she was enjoying this, enjoying him. There was no way he wasn't going to be her doom and yet she wanted it...wanted him more. Even more so when he offered her a chance she knew was going to expire the moment she left the room.
Cassidy didn't trust her voice right then so she just nodded, removing her arm from his neck. She gave him one more quick kiss before taking his hand and pulling him towards his bed. She kicked off her sneakers before pulling herself up on his bed. Her eyes locked on his as she tugged him down.

The dead, but never mourned He'd rendered her about speechless and Will never thought he would see the day. It amused him, if only a little because he'd been trying the whole time they knew each other just to get her to not have a retort of her own. They both knew the offer was short-lived and that things would likely fizzle out once she left. He would do his best to prolong it as long as he could for both of their sake. They equally needed this, probably for different reasons.
He followed her to his bed and sat down. With his hand still in hers, he pulled her to sit on his lap, cradled against his chest. At this point he just needed her close. He nuzzled his nose against her cheek and smiled, which for him was just a small quirk of his lips, "You know, in order for this to work, you're gonna have to be your usual chatty self." Perhaps he should have been gentler with his words, but he believed Cassidy was strong and the part of their relationship that he loved was how straightforward they could be with each other. He was tip-toeing around these new feelings, while also trying to maintain the foundation that they'd created. That foundation may have been created on irritation and frustration with each other, but it also led to where they were now.
Will could remember the way they got along while working on the project after both agreeing that it was the only way they would finish it with an A. Surely now, in this setting, under these circumstances they would be able to reach that again on a more genuine front. He twirled a lock of her hair around his finger, "Do you want me to go first? You ask, I'll answer?"

Cassidy let Will pull her into his lap and immediately she leaned into his chest, letting her head rest on his shoulder. It couldn't have been even half an hour before that she thought Will hated her but now they somehow fit together like they were meant to be. As cliched as that sounded.
She couldn't help but chuckle at his comment, rolling her eyes at him for even suggesting that she was being too quiet. The dark haired young woman pulled her legs up to her chin and squeezed Will's hand. "I thought you found my opinions grating." She teased before nodding at his offer to start first.
"How are you feeling right now?" She asked. There was no use beating around the bush because she wanted to use the time they had then to it's full capacity.

The dead, but never mourned Will laughed and shrugged, "I mean they are." But that was the one commonality they shared that he knew about. Their quick wit and fast snapping. It didn't matter who started it, they could go on for hours just berating each other about every little thing they found annoying. And while she had the ability to truly get under his skin, he also enjoyed the way she knew him well enough to know what could get to him. Very few people had the opportunity let alone used that opportunity and made it count.
He tensed up at her first question and he found himself instantly regretting giving her the chance to ask. Of course she would notice that he was still very sick. It had been weeks and here he looked worse than before. William chewed on his lip for a moment, trying to find a way to answer honestly without giving much away. He cleared his throat, "Not a hundred percent, but I'm working on it." Which wasn't a lie. Granted, he was feeling much closer to zero than a hundred, but he didn't think that was necessary to say.
"How'd things end up at the hospital? Were they okay?" He realized he'd never asked her who it was after making the boyfriend comment that day.

Elbowing his ribs playfully, Cassidy rested her head against his shoulder and sighed softly. She didn't realise how comforting this position was as she pulled his arms around her.
Will's response was one she wasn't quite satisfied with but she let it slide. She knew she hit him with a hard one right out of the gate. His question was one she could thankfully answer honestly. Elena was not doing better but she hadn't gotten any worst. Cassidy told him as much.
"But we don't know how long she has. They caught it way too late." She let out a sigh and closed her eyes. She could feel them starting to sting and she took a sharp breath. "She's been my best friend since we were babies, you know? We grew up together." Cassidy bit her lower lip. "Wait, was that your question?" She asked, looking up with a crooked grin.

The dead, but never mourned Will tightened his arms around her as she pull them closer and pressed his lips to the top of her head. Breathing her in, he knew that it would drive him mad the moment he let her leave. In the confines of his room, he could be who he was, not who he needed everyone to think he was. Once they were back in class, he would need to keep her at arms length again. He'd have to act like he didn't care about her or even like her, but all he could hope for was that in some small part of her mind she would hold onto him like this while he lashed out at her. Will wasn't stupid enough to think that she would accept being treated like dirt though, nor did he want that for her.
Her response made him frown and his stomach twisted at the words 'how long she has' because it was something that he'd had to think about for weeks. If the drug therapy didn't work, he was not going to try chemo and he wasn't going to keep hopelessly attempting to cure what was killing him. He was going to live it out, no matter how much pain he had to withstand. The last thing he wanted was to be numb for the last bit of his life that he had left. He gave her a tight squeeze when he heard the sudden intake of breath, he was incapable of offering her any comforting words because there were none for those circumstances.
She looked up and he offered her a small quirk of his lips and nodded, "Yes, that was a fine answer." He looked away briefly and took a deep breath, "I can understand the worry, I'm sure I'd go out of my mind if my best friend was sick. He's the better man between us, as if that's entirely shocking." Will laughed shortly and he cleared his throat.

Being this close to Will was flaring up warning bells in her head, like their time together had a timer. Cassidy didn't ever want to leave the bubble they had created but she knew she had to. She knew Will wasn't going to be this way outside of his room and part of her was scared. She closed her eyes and tried to just enjoy this moment. She could steel herself from his assholery when she left.
When Will squeezed her, she sighed. It was the most comforting gesture she had been given in a while.
She smiled at his response and looked back down, letting her head rest against his shoulder again. Laughing at his statement, she patted her arm and cleared her throat. "Nothing about you shocks me anymore." She said quietly. "Next question, although I mean I probably already know the answer to this but still...when will I meet this better man? Maybe I can get my hugs from him instead." She teased.

The dead, but never mourned Mentioning Gabe had probably been a huge mistake on his part. To give her anything on him, any bit of information that she could use to figure him out, was a mistake. And he'd given her a person, someone she could talk to in order to learn why he was the way that he was. Gabriel had been trying to find him a girl since they first met. He was a smooth-talking charmer and had no problem picking up women if he chose to. Will could likely give him a run for his money, but he never tried. If Gabe found out about her, he knew he'd be doomed.
Her tease did nothing to make him feel any better about telling her. Out of habit, he tensed up and his hold on her loosened. The walls threatened to come back up, but they hesitated because despite knowing it was a terrible idea, he wanted her to know him. He wanted her to meet his best friend and the only person who had ever taken the time to give a shit about him. Will wanted her to know the person who saved his life, the person who aided in getting him to this point with her even as he fought it every step of the way. If Gabe hadn't come into his life, he'd have died a long time ago and he never would have met her. He never would have known what it felt like to care about someone other than himself so deeply and he never would have felt the familial bond that he'd been ripped away from.
Will's expression was blank as he looked away, but he didn't let her go. He didn't dare to because he still had time. "I'm sure you'll come across him at some point," his tone was flat and his whole demeanor had changed. Internally all he could do was struggle against his instincts to push her away. He blinked back the distant expression in his eyes, but still didn't look at her. "I don't know how to do this, Angel..." How was he supposed to freely open up when he had built new walls every year of his life that went by where nothing got any better?

Instinct moved her when Will fidgeted. It was like the proverbial other shoe finally dropped. Yes, he didn't move away but the way he stiffened told her that he was uncomfortable and it was her fault. She sat up straight and even though Will hadn't moved away, Cassidy was on edge already. She didn't know if she could actually relax in his hold again.
Even Will's response told her that whatever they had before was over. She gulped inaudibly and tried not to give in to the thought of escape. She scooted away in the end, leaning against the wall to look at him, pulling her legs up to her chin.
"Be my friend?" Cassidy asked with a cynical smirk. "Yeah, I don't think anyone does." She continued, her voice meek and unsure. "It's fine, Will. Maybe my coming here was a mistake?" She asked, looking at him with an uncertainty she didn't like feeling. "Should I go?"

The dead, but never mourned Friend. The word hung there for a moment and the walls stacked back up, brick by brick, another layer added. If she was the type to kiss friends like that, then he knew this was for the best. That he'd been right about her and that there was nothing between them. He must have imagined the whole thing, from the moment she ran to him for comfort down to the kiss that he'd been dying for since their project in class. He was right to pull away from her, he was right to distance himself. At least he could say that he'd kissed a beautiful girl before he died even if she wasn't what he originally thought.
With her warmth stripped away and the smell of her shampoo no longer distracting him, Will felt things begin to clear up. This was the girl that he'd hated before, a nuisance who tried endlessly to get to him, only to succeed and pawn it off as something else. She wanted him to fall for her so that she could learn his fucked up life that no one else was allowed to know. She was only in it for the gossip. And he couldn't be happier that he hadn't broken down and told her everything. He reached a level of emotional exhaustion that he hadn't thought was possible, but being near her was taxing. If he kept it up, perhaps she'd kill him.
He composed himself enough to look at her then, his eyes glazed over the way they were after taking his handful of pills. One step forward, fifty steps back. He straightened up and swung his legs over the edge of the bed, his hands gripping the mattress so hard that his knuckles were white, "You're right. It was." Will glanced over his shoulder, "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." When his eyes met hers, he could feel his words burning against his lips. Somehow the pain of their interaction was far worse than the pain he endured from the cancer. And he hoped that he would die before feeling that same pain again. Least of all from her.

It pained her to catch a glimpse of Will as he turned away. He was shut off, she knew that. Of all the irony in the world, Cassidy knew Will.
She took a deep breath, part of it catching in her throat, making her emit a sound akin to a sob. Cassidy waited a bit before scooting over to the edge, her hand brushing his as she made her way to the door.
"For the record, I was hoping you would be open to being more than just my friend. Fuck me, right?" Her lower lip trembled as she exited the room.
