Competition season was probably Haden's favorite time. All of the work that he and the instructor had put in for months was finally being shown off. This was his third year as an assistant instructor and he'd had some of the students for all three of his years that he even knew from his own classes before he graduated. It was the closest thing to a family that he knew. To watch them compete their hearts out and slay the competition, it was almost an overwhelming feeling of joy.
However, there was no place like home.
Not that he'd spent much time there since he'd been back. The moment his feet touched the airport floor, he was off. Haden hadn't bothered stopping at home to drop his things off. He'd gone straight to the studio right down the road from the academy. The timing was almost perfect, the class was in the middle of its session and he knew that the moment he entered the building, just to peak inside the room, the jig would be up. Ella had no idea he was home and he had been sure to keep it under wraps when he would see her, despite how often she asked him.
Haden pulled his jacket close around his neck, glancing around before heading into the studio. As he'd guessed, all the students were lined up at the bar, backs facing him. He smirked and leaned against the doorway, waiting for any pair of eyes to catch sight of him. Surely enough, a small girl with her butt in the air, head between her legs saw him and nearly did a somersault out of excitement. She stumbled a bit and staggered back to her feet before screeching and running at him, "Hadennnnnnn!"
And just like that, 15 pairs of eyes were on him and he planted himself in preparation for being mobbed, "I'm home!"

Gabriella was correcting one student's stance when there was a scuffle of little feet and squeals from behind her that cut off her concentration. It took a lot for these kids to get distracted and she knew exactly what, or who, it was that got them all in a tizzy.
She straightened up and her eyes went to the door where her best friend of twelve years stood, looking like the prettiest dancer in the world by the door. As they kids climbed all over him, Gabriella's lips curled into an easy smile as she let the student she had been helping run to Haden.
"Alright alright, make way. That's my person, y'all can go find your own." She weaved her way through the tiny ones to get to Haden. "Sinatra! When did you come in?" She beamed, pulling him for a big hug that lingered just a bit too long. "I could have picked you up after class."

With the kids climbing and swarming around him, he couldn't help but laugh. His eyes scanned the group in front of him briefly before lifting up and catching the person he'd come to see. She weaved her way through the crowd towards him and the moment she was close enough she threw her arms around him and he pulled her in close. Haden had been away from her for longer periods of time, but it was always the same when he came back. He squeezed her tight and lifted her feet from the ground a bit before setting her down and pulling back. He rolled his eyes at her and shrugged, "I wanted to surprise you instead. Plus, I couldn't very well let you get all of the attention, I had to see the kiddos too!"
The mob of children all cheered and hollered, "Alright, alright, you guys. Time to get back to the bar, still gotta make it through class." He smiled at Ella and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. "Maybe once they're off the bar exercises we can show 'em some fun stuff, yeah?" The kids all giggled and scattered back to where they had run from, but Haden lingered near Ella. Distance never did him any good and he found himself to be a bit more on the clingy side when he returned each time.
Once he had room to move, he set down his bag and shrugged off his jacket, "What's on the agenda for today, Teach?" He flashed her a smirk, folding his arms across his chest.

Ella let the warmth from his kiss spread down her body and she squeezed him once more. She laughed when the kids reacted to Haden's eagerness to see them. How he had that effect on everyone he met was beyond Ella. She had to work on getting the kids' affection and all he had to do was walk into a room.
Oh yes she was quite jealous.
Without much fuss, the kids were back at the bar, all eager to please Haden. Ella shook her head affectionately and went to the front of the class to instruct them on what to do next.
She looked at Haden over her shoulder. "They're doing pliés today. Kiera and Sasha have been practising very hard as you can see."
And the kids demonstrated perfect pliés, one right after the other and Ella couldn't help but smile. "Oh so now Haden's here, you're all suddenly experts huh." She teased them, which earned giggles through the room as they continued to demonstrate.

Haden wouldn't quite say he had a way with people, though perhaps he had a way with kids. It was the infectious attitude that he carried, doing his best to be cheerful and optimistic. Growing up, things had been rough, but at the very least he'd acquired Ella along the way. She was the only one who saw through his charade and he liked to think that he could offer that to one of the kids in this room. Or all of them. It went deeper than just the shallow reason of wanting them to like him better than Ella, although it had its perks, but he genuinely cared about what he was offering. Dancing had given him his best friend and a family.
His nose scrunched at the word 'plié' and at that the kids laughed. When she looked over her shoulder at him, he gave a smile and nodded before she turned back and his face scrunched up again. "They are doing amazing! But don't worry Ells, you've still got the best plié around," He winked at the kids and laughed.
When she teased the kids, all he could do was watch her. She'd always been a better teacher, patient and understanding. Haden had been offered the instructor position a year or two ago, but always turned it down because he couldn't handle the stress of being in charge. He was a better side-kick than he was a leader. The pressure of having everyone depending on him triggered his flightiness, which he'd been trying so hard to fight. The only way he could do so was remaining on the sidelines. "Who wants to see Miss Ella show off? Anybody?"

Rolling her eyes at Haden's teasing, she let the kids have their bit of fun before moving them forward in their lesson.
Having Haden around put everyone in a teasing mood and soon enough, the kids were calling her out and asking her to do a routine. She looked at Haden exasperatedly, shaking her head in amusement. "Thank you, Mr. Pierce." She responded with a chuckle and looked around at the kids. "Sorry guys." She started to say but the kids refused to take no for an answer and Ella could never really say no to her students so she shook her head one more time and took up the stance.
The kids all scrambled to stand to the side, their eager faces looking to Ella before she started off with a pirouette into the routine that she performed at her eighth grade recital. She was too aware of Haden's eyes but she kept her focus on the children.
Once she was done, she gave a little curtsy and the kids started clapping boisterously. "Okay okay we have like five more minutes till the end of class so why don't we cool down with some stretches. Bar please."
All the kids scrambled to the bar and began their cool down stretches, counting each other off like she taught them. Ella walked over to Haden and punched him in the arm. "I am so not a performance monkey. I thought that was your job." She teased, bumping his shoulder with hers playfully.

Haden always loved watching Ella dance. She was beautiful and fluid with her motions, so graceful and light. He envied her for the natural movement of her body, she made everything seem so effortless. He was lucky to get her as a competing partner because his main job was just making her look incredible, something she managed all on her own. She finished her dance and he could feel the smile on his face as he joined the kids in clapping and whistling for their teacher. She may not have liked being a performance monkey, but he knew that by watching her it would do the kids a world of good. It would motivate them to stick with it because eventually they would be able to do what she did.
She punched him in the arm and he stood smirking, "Normally it is, you're right. But I don't look quite as pretty when I dance. Besides, you're their teacher, they should be allowed to see why that is, ya know?" He nudged her back and slung an arm around her shoulders, "You make for a very cute performance monkey, Ells." He squeezed her shoulders before letting his arm drop back to his side.
Parents began to show up to pick their kids up from class and he had to turn away from the affectionate displays. His shoulders tensed up a bit, so he chose to walk to the middle of the floor and distracted himself with bits of choreography that he'd been making up in his head. He closed his eyes as he danced, imagining a beat and melody that weren't there. Ella was always a lot better at dealing with the parents than he was and it made things easier when he didn't have to focus on the things that he'd missed out on. He'd just gotten home, the last thing he wanted was to sour his own mood.

Ella chuckled when he squeezed her shoulders and she rolled them back in mock annoyance. When the parents came pouring in, Haden's absence by her side made her want to reach out because he had a habit of closing himself off whenever he saw familial displays of affection.
But she had to speak to the parents so she let him work out his frustrations as she addressed them. "The winter recital is coming up in three weeks, I've sent the video packet of the training they will need to go through at home just to brush up on it. I usually urge at least an hour of practice every other day but don't overwork their muscles, yeah?"
The parents murmured in agreement before thanking her and going on their way. Once the room was quiet, save the squeaks from Haden's trainers against the floor, Ella closed the door and turned to her best friend.
"Hey buddy," she called out softly as she walked over to him, sliding her hand over his shoulder and grabbing his hand to pull him into a dance. She looked up into his eyes and slid her free hand around his waist. "Missed you." She grinned as she forced him to sway to an unheard slow beat.

Haden was fully aware of Ella talking to the parents, he could hear her voice, though muffled by a slight distance. He was tethered to her in some kind of way that always made him cling to the sound of her voice. It was one of the only comforts he had in his life, something that had been a constant for several years. When the room went quiet, his shoulders dropped and his tension slipped away with the remnant voices and giggles. The door latched, but he kept his eyes closed for the moments leading up to her footsteps in front of him.
She slid his hand over his shoulder and took his hand. While she whisked him into a slow dance, he opened his eyes and settled to look at her. Haden hadn't been gone for more than a few weeks, a couple of months maybe, but nonetheless, he'd missed her to the point of misery. Her words only solidified the feeling. Haden twirled her around and pulled her in closer. "Life must be pretty boring without me, huh?" He smirked the tiniest bit before pressing his cheek against hers and continued swaying.
Haden sighed and breathed into her ear, "I missed you, too, Ells. I'm glad I'm home."

Ella had to admit to herself that being in Haden's arms felt a lot safer than being in anyone else's. Even her boyfriend Sam. It was a dangerous thought, she knew, but one she had come to terms with a long time ago. It helped that she knew Haden only saw her as a sister. As family.
She let him spin her around and when her back connected to his front, she leaned in instinctively and closed her eyes. She chuckled and squeezed his arm. "Sure." She responded, her tone amused. While her life didn't necessarily revolve around Haden, Ella couldn't deny the fact that it seemed a lot brighter with him close.
His breath tickled her neck, causing goosebumps to run the whole way down her body and she squeezed his arm that was around her waist. "Me too, Sinatra." She sighed before turning herself out of his arms after a while. She moved to get her bag and proceeded to switch all the lights off.
"I'm starving. Wanna go to Peter's?" She asked, mentioning their favourite burger joint.

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
It was always easy to get caught up in the moment. Haden often found himself pulling back far before she did because he knew he had to. She had a boyfriend or he had a girlfriend. That was the nonstop cycle they'd always been on and even if there was a small break of them both being alone...nothing ever happened. As he held her, he could picture dating her. It was easy because she knew him already. Inside and out. She caught onto his extravagant lies and stories, but never got angry with him for making things up because she somehow understood why he had to do it.
When she twirled right out of the hold, he let his arm drop and he knew the moment was over.
She grabbed her stuff, and he went to pick his own bags up. With the lights all off, he took a moment to compose himself again. Back to the friend zone where he obviously belonged with her. The mention of food made him perk up and he nodded, "Yeah for sure. Let's get at it." He held the door open for her as they both stepped out of the studio. "What'd you get into while I was gone? Anything halfway worth mentioning," He smirked.
Home for me is where you are.

It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
In the dark, as Ella picked her stuff up, she actively had to remind herself that she had a boyfriend whom she loved. One that she would be going home to in a few hours time. One that she could actually see a future with, after so many heartbreaks at someone else's hands. She was well aware of this and yet, with Haden around her, she couldn't fully believe it.
She beamed when he agreed to the idea of food. She walked past him through the door and laughed at his question. "You know my life revolves around you, Aid." She rolled her eyes before shrugging. Turned out, there hadn't really been anything halfway worth mentioning that happened in his absence. Apart from her class getting a lot better, she had nothing else to report.
"But you've only been gone for a month. Although that being said, shouldn't I be asking you the same thing?" She asked as they moved out of the dance studio and on to the sidewalk. Some of the parents of her students were still around the area and they waved at her. She waved back and took Haden's hand to steer him to where they were going to eat.
"Did you meet Sidney Simms? He was one of the choreographers right?"

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
"I was giving you the benefit of the doubt, Ells," He smiled. Of course it fed into his ego whenever she said that she didn't happen across anything fun without him. Her boyfriend clearly wasn't as exciting as he was, they never were. Typically Haden kept those comments to himself until after they were out of the picture though. It didn't take long, in fact, he felt like something always happened shortly after his return. Some guys just couldn't handle her best friend being a better-looking guy who happened to know her better than they could ever hope for.
Haden shrugged, a month wasn't that long in retrospect, but it felt like longer when she wasn't traveling with him. In his month away, he hadn't done a whole lot. He'd been doing his best to distract himself from thinking about her. Which posed to be difficult, despite the countless girls that he'd come across. "Depends on what you would think is worthy of mentioning. Mostly consisted of rehearsal, sleeping, eating out. I was with the team for most of the time." And when he wasn't, he was at a bar with the other instructors that he'd met from competitions.
Her question sparked his memory and his enthusiasm, "Shit, I forgot to call you after that, didn't I? Oh I suck." His hands became animated and his face lit up, "Incredible. I'm telling you what Ells, you'd have loved him. He's a genius when it comes to movement and the big picture of production." The amount of fangirling Haden had done was embarrassing, and yet, he felt no remorse doing it. Least of all when the man had asked for Haden's information after watching him. "He got my number, said the next project he was working on might be looking for a fresh face in the dance world and...Ella, I almost passed out on the spot."
Home for me is where you are.

It's not unusual

"Oh how generous of you." She rolled her eyes, a smile clear on her face. She didn't remember the last time she was actually mad at Haden for saying stupid things. She shook her head lightly and brushed a lock of hair that had fallen out of her scarf. She paused and pulled it off before scooping all her hair and tying it up in a bun.
"So it was just as boring without me huh." She jutted her chin up smugly.
Her eyes widened and she grabbed Haden to stop him from walking, squeezing his arm as he relayed what happened with him and their favourite choreographer. She squealed and jumped before hugging him tightly. "I'd've peed my pants oh my God, he's as good as we thought huh?" She squealed again and sighed. "I'm so jealous right now. Did you at least get a picture with him?" She asked before grabbing him again by the arm as her eyes widened. "Wait, he's looking for dancers? And he spoke to you? Haden! This is huge!" She exclaimed and hugged him again, jumping as she did so.

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
When she grabbed his arm, he stopped and couldn't help but smile. He'd been keeping it to himself purposefully, of course. It was meant to be a surprise, something that he couldn't afford to tell her over the phone. He wrapped his arms around her when she hugged him and he laughed. When she pulled away again, he continued to watch her. This was exactly why they were best friends.
"He's amazing. And of course I got a picture with him, I've got something signed for you, too," Because he always tried to bring something home for her when he went away.
She suddenly got very intense and he smiled at her before she threw her arms around him again, "He is looking for dancers. And he's got my number and our names." Haden pulled back from her, his hands on her shoulders so that he could look at her. "He's starting a European tour and he's holding auditions in a few weeks. I told him about you, about us. Our partnership and he said that he'd like to see it in person," He'd been aiming to take her with him on tour for a while. The class was her main focus, he knew, but there came a time when she needed to focus on herself. On what she was capable of. Haden had been with the team for a long time, but there came a point where he couldn't just be an instructor anymore. He wanted something more, something bigger, a name for himself. Maybe it was growing up without a name to back him, but he was going to be someone great.
"He's looking for some new principals for his show. A younger pair, something different. We could rule Europe, Ells."
Home for me is where you are.
