And though it's just a line to you
For me it's true
Her smile warmed and she pressed her cheek against the side of his head before turning in his arms, laughing at his statement. "Would it make you feel better if I told you I'm losing pretty badly in the cute department? Because you're...really, really, really cute?" She grinned, biting her lower lip.
When he mentioned a couples game, Halley couldn't help feel giddy at the idea that they were indeed a couple. Yes, they had only been on one date, but they were both already into each other, there's no reason to not call it like it was, right?
"Let's do that." She giggled and tugged him over to the skeeball machine. "Okay come on, I'm gonna teach you how to win." She rubbed his hand in hers as she fed the machine some tokens. When the balls came rolling down, she grabbed one and put it in Nick's hand. "It's just like bowling, hon. Just roll the ball."
She stood behind him and guided his hand down, her other hand on his waist as she pushed him down to bend, level to the machine.
And never seemed so right before

An Open Heart is an open wound to you
"Likely story," He smiled back at her and rubbed his nose against hers. Nick was reluctant to say the least about another game, but he couldn't quite say no to a face like that. Least of all when she touched his hand. Standing in front of the game, he stared at it with a grimace. Bowling had never really been his thing either, let alone mini bowling.
When Halley stood behind him and placed her hand on his waist, he almost doubled over in laughter, "Shouldn't this be the other way around?" Of course that was such a stereotype, but he was a little jealous that she was doing it to him. Nick rolled the ball up the ramp and frowned when it went into the lowest score. "This game is awful." And he was most definitely being a sour loser. Emma would never let him live it down if she found out that he was losing to Halley as much as he was used to losing to her.
"And here I thought I'd be able to show off in front of you at least once," Nick pouted.

Closing her eyes, she smiled and was overwhelmed by how sweet Nick was being. Which she didn't mind one bit.
When he mentioned how it should be the other way around, she pressed her face into the back of his shoulder and chuckled. It grew a little louder when he complained about the game. She nudged him so he would turn around and when he did, she cupped his cheeks and pulled him down for a sweet kiss that lasted a little longer than it was appropriate before she let him go.
"I don't need you to show off in front of me to know that you're a wonderful man, Nick." She slid her thumb over his cheekbone and smiled gently up at him.
"Get a room!" a kid yelled from the racing console a few machines down, causing Halley to laugh and bury her face in Nick's chest. "Oh my God."

The Words
An Open Heart is an open wound to you
The comforting and the encouragement was hard to comprehend coming from someone who wasn't directly related to him. He'd been so used to having his masculinity questioned and messed with and torn apart by others, significant others in particular. Part of him wondered if that was what made him feel so inexplicably drawn to her, as if they'd been together for years rather than just...a very short amount of time.
She cupped his face and he kissed her, wrapping his arms tight around her waist to bring her closer. All too soon she let go and he looked down at her, giving a single nod and a smile. When the kid called out for them to get a room, he immediately felt like he was fourteen, living at home while his parents finally got together. While he had been dying for it to happen, he hadn't particularly enjoyed watching it. Her face buried in his chest and he laughed. Nick shrugged at the kid and rested his cheek against the side of Halley's head when he leaned down to her ear, "He's just jealous."
When he pulled back he kissed the top of her head, "I guess we should probably play our game, huh?"

And though it's just a line to you

Unaware of his inner turmoil, all Halley wanted to do was make Nick feel good. About himself, about her, about them as a unit. She knew this was just their first date and she was hoping there would be more, but she had liked him the moment he opened his door to her that first day she moved in.
She laughed when Nick said the kid was just jealous and she pushed away after he kissed her on the head. "Yeah, probably best." She laughed and played the game until there weren't any more balls left. She tore the tickets and handed them over to Nick and they played more games. She won some, she lost some, but the huge smile on her face never wavered.
With the bundle of tickets they had both procured from the many machines they pretty much destroyed, Halley pulled them to the counter to redeem their prizes.
"Oooh, so many good choices." She breathed, looking at the display. She wanted to get something to comemmorate their first date. Turning to Nick, she slid her arm through his and squeezed lightly. "What should we get?"
And never seemed so right before

Nick stood behind her when they approached the counter. He didn't mind letting her pick what she wanted, he'd have complied even if he'd won most of the tickets. Which he hadn't. Therefore, he paid little attention to the gadgets and gizmos that were lining the counter and the wall behind the clerk. Instead, his eyes were on her and the way her face lit up at the options.
When she slid her arm through his, he smiled down at her and his eyebrows pulled together. He hadn't been expecting to be included in the decision. He brushed his fingers through her hair and pursed his lips. "I dunno, something big and fluffy," He laughed and shrugged. There wasn't anything in particular that he cared for on the wall. There were little finger traps and poppers among different candies and stuffed animals.
"What looks good to you, hun?"

She laughed along with him and nodded in agreement. "Arya will claw it's eyes out but I do like fluffy stuff." She chuckled and looked up at Nick with bright eyes. "Don't worry, I won't let Arya near it." She turned back to the array of stuffed animals and chose a big purple dinosaur. It came to Halley's waist and it probably weighed a ton but it had the cutest face.
She pointed to the one she wanted and asked Nick for the tickets to exchange. "What should we call her? You choose."

Nick could relate. Max was a little shit when it came to stuffed animals. He tore them to shreds and thought nothing of it when their heads were ripped off. After a couple of stuffed animals, Nick had decided to stick with Kong balls and rope for tug-a-war. He smiled at her and nodded, "Good choice, Hal. I think it'll look really nice in your house." He'd caught himself before saying 'her bed' because, well, he felt a little awkward drawing reference to her bedroom already. It was still just the first date.
She asked to name it and while Halley called the stuffed animal a girl, all the names that came to mind made him laugh outright. "Uh, I'm not quite sure I'm the best person to pick out a name. The first ones that popped into my head were Bob, Kevin, and Stuart. Ya know, from the Minions because...well, the socks," He laughed again out of embarrassment and shook his head. There was clearly something wrong with him if he'd thought of Minions on his first date with a pretty girl and openly said it.
"Kinda looks like Barney to me, too though."

"We could totally have shared custody over her. One week with me, one week with you. If you want." She shrugged, only partially aware of what she had just said.
She laughed when Nick gave the names and she shrugged. "Bob it is. Barney gave me the creeps." Halley grimaced before laughing. It wasn't a big deal, really, but those eyes on that fake dinosaur suit really bugged her.
When they got Bob, Halley carried her and out they went. "Tonight's been fun, Nick." She smiled, holding Bob in one hand while the other grasped Nick's. "I kinda don't want it to end."

His eyebrows raised at her suggestion and he couldn't stop from smiling. It was kind of cute. He remembered doing something similar back when he and Emma were really young and living further apart. He couldn't pinpoint which was more persistent, older Emma or younger. Nick shrugged, "That'd be fine with me. I'll have to keep Max from seeing it, he's been on the wild side lately."
When she agreed to the name Bob, Nick knew that she was probably the only person who would agree to something as silly as one of the Minion names. But she made a fair point about Barney being creepy, Nick could relate. "You're right, totally creepy. Bob is good. He was the cutest anyway."
After the stuffed dinosaur was handed to Halley, Nick took her hand while they walked out. He knew that the date was drawing to a close which bummed him out a little. Of course, they lived right next door so they at least didn't have to go far when they wanted to see each other. He chewed on his lip and nodded, "Yeah, I don't either. Good thing we live next door though, right? We could watch a movie or whatever." Although, he wasn't sure she'd go for it since it was late and the odds of them falling asleep were probably pretty high.

"You know what, so has Arya." Halley claimed with a bit of a frown. "Maybe we need to bring them out. We could go to the park?" She suggested with a smile.
She laughed and nodded. "I'm so glad I'm not the only who thinks so. Like...how do the kids on that show not find the suit creepy?" She shuddered exaggeratedly before chuckling lightly.
"Absolutely. You're welcome into my apartment anytime, by the way. I know that sounds too forward and we've just been on this one date but...I mean...the offer's on the table."
It was times like these that Halley wished she had a filter. She turned away from Nick and rubbed her nose a little with the hand currently holding the giant stuffed dinosaur. "But...I mean...movie sounds great and all but I'm actually getting pretty tired." She grinned up at him apologetically and squeezed his hand.

Nick smiled, a cat and a dog at the park, wouldn't they get some weird looks? He didn't mind much, it actually painted a pretty funny picture, "Sounds like our next date is already planned, huh?"
The forwardness of her remark about the apartment didn't sway him. Not really. They were next-door neighbors which was a step away from living together. At least, that's sort of what he'd been thinking the whole night. He tried not to think about that though, it was a little soon. "Well, same, ya know," Nick smiled and squeezed her hand. There was very little harm it could do for her to be in his apartment, even if he wasn't home. Especially on the nights when he worked the graveyard shift. Max always seemed to hate those days the most and reacted accordingly.
Her decline did make him frown, however, but he did his best not to let it remain there long. He quirked up the side of his lips and nodded, "That's okay, really. I've got the night shift tomorrow and probably should adjust my sleeping schedule. Up all night, sleep all day, ya know." He shrugged, "There's always the next day we have off together, or just a night when you want to hang out."

Halley's smile could not have gotten wider when he was already talking about the second date. Although, to be fair, this date had gone remarkably well. A second date seemed inevitable. But hearing it coming from him was a load off her back.
"Okay," she nodded as a response to his offer. The idea that she could come and go as she pleased was honestly appealing. Sometimes it did get lonely in her apartment. Having someone else around would be pretty good for her.
If anything, she could just keep Max entertained and Nick could keep Arya entertained should they ever have opposing schedules.
"Ugh, I know how that is. Although I've given up even having a schedule in the first place. I get my sleep whenever possible. But I love my job, I really do. And you do too, I bet." She stroked his arm up and down with a smile.
They were finally at his car and she waited for him to unlock it before setting Bob in the backseat and climbing on to the passenger seat to wait for Nick. She still had a smile plastered on her face and she didn't know if it was ever going to go away.

He nodded, it was safe to say he did love his job. The schedule was a mess, which had been a colossal problem between him and his ex. She expected him to have some kind of set thing even though he was a cop. And there it was, another huge difference between the two women he had to compare. He was realizing there really wasn't a comparison, but it was nice to notice how much better she was for him. Halley, being a nurse, he knew he didn't have to worry about her being too dependent on him and the time he spent with her. She could be on her own and self-sufficient.
"It's all I wanted to do, ever since I could remember. It was either that or the military and my mom," He paused and shook his head, no longer smiling or joking. "She couldn't really handle the military thing. She could barely stomach the cop thing." Nick knew that Halley had seen that side of his mother when he got shot, but it went so much deeper than just worrying about him as a mother and it always sort of made him feel guilty.
Nick squeezed her hand as he unlocked the car and opened the door for her. Once she was in, he closed it behind her and went to the driver's side. Starting the car, he was quick to grab her hand again as they drove back. He realized the weight of the night ending was starting to fall on him and he was trying his hardest not to wear on the mood.

Nick's response had Halley nodding. She remembered how Layla had been. Halley didn't know the extent, obviously but what she saw, she kind of understood. He was lucky that time, Halley realised that, but the worry that he might not be the next time did weigh down on her. She couldn't imagine how Layla must feel.
She accepted his hand and pulled it up to her lips, pressing them there for a while before putting it down on her lap, with her other hand over it. Her thumb lazily stroked the top of his hand.
They spent the drive in silence and when they finally arrived, Halley stopped him from leaving the car as she adjusted herself in her seat to look at him.
"I don't want to go in just yet." She confessed with a small shy smile. "I know I said I was sleepy earlier but now that we're here...I don't want this to end yet."
