When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Miles wanted to stop Spencer. Yes, it was Charlotte's best friend and she shouldn't be mad, but he had no idea what Charlotte would do. He prided himself on knowing his twin, but in these circumstances, well, he had no idea what to think. She already had his shirt on before he could finish pulling his dress pants on, though she'd distracted him with her lips and he hardly found that to be fair.
She opened the door and Miles stood there, unwilling to get back to the bed because he would need to act quickly if Charlotte was less than pleased with the arrangement. He focused on the emotions in the room, trying to gauge what would happen before it actually happened. Charlotte was surprised, he could feel that, when Spencer opened the door. He wished he could see her face or something, but Spencer had her blocked from him.
Charlotte's brain couldn't quite move fast enough to comprehend the situation before Spencer burst out what was going on and immediately pleaded for her not to be mad. Her expression remained unreadable. Miles frowned because he could feel her starting to pull away before she answered. Her emotions were frantic and he sighed, he should have told her instead of letting Spencer do it.
"Sorry, I'll uh...sorry," She mumbled, dropping her eyes and turning around to walk back towards the ballroom. Miles started scrambling again, buttoning his pants and throwing on a t-shirt.
He came up behind Spencer and put his hand on her back, "Stay here," He kissed the top of her head and opened the door a little wider so that he could slip out into the hall after his twin.
But I think I’ve found the light.

I love cheap thrills
I got all I need
For once in their almost ten year friendship, Spencer couldn't read Charlotte. Guilt immediately took hold of her. The usually stoic Spencer crumbled at the door when Charlotte walked away.
Even when Miles moved into action, Spencer didn't find comfort in his kiss. With his absence from the room, Spencer grabbed her things and started to dress up again. She draped Miles' shirt over a chair and sat on it as she mulled over the fact that she might have just ruined the only friendship that mattered to her.
All because she couldn't keep her legs closed.
No she didn't regret sleeping with Miles. Not by a long shot. She had enjoyed herself and she liked Miles, no question. But what if Charlotte couldn't look past it? She knew Spencer and her whoring ways. It must have been okay for Charlotte to look the other way because the guys she always went for weren't related to her. But this was her twin.
Spencer needed some air so she went to the balcony of the room and leaned over the railings, closing her eyes as a fresh bout of tears started rolling down her cheeks. This was so unlike her. Spencer was so used to being an island. Even with Charlotte as her best friend, she had always been self-sufficient. Or so she thought. It was now made abundantly clear that her island included the Spencers.
If Charlotte hated her for this, Spencer didn't know what she would do. The tears kept rolling down her cheeks and she didn't know how they were going to stop.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
He was quick to catch up to Charlotte before she could reach the end of the hall. He grabbed her arm and she turned to face him, her eyes completely blank. If it wasn't for the fact that she was his twin, he never would have known what to do. But this was something he'd seen from her countless times. The way she processed things, it was delayed and it always struck harder initially than it did for even him. It was always him calling her back, easing her mind and giving her perspective, but not once had it ever been something like this.
Miles looked down at his twin and frowned, "I'm sorry. I should have found you before we bailed on the party. I didn't mean to make you worry. But Max came, right? That's where you've been most of the time?" His eyes were soft and he kept his fingers lightly touching her arm as a way to offer some kind of contact to make sure he caught exactly what she was feeling.
Her eyes dropped and she nodded, "Yeah, I guess I should apologize, too, huh? I didn't exactly stick around for you tonight." She trailed off quietly and he knew she was avoiding speaking what she was thinking. Instead of pressing her for more, he waited silently for her to come out with it. It only took a moment and she took a deep breath, "You had sex.... With Spence." Except it wasn't a question because she knew.
He chewed on the inside of his cheek and watched her face, "Is that such a bad thing? You know Spencer better than anyone, Lot. And you know me. Is it so wrong that her and I hooked up?" Miles realized the words felt strange coming from his mouth. He didn't want it to be just a hook up, but for now, until he talked to Spencer, that's what it was. "You know I've always had a thing for her."
"I just.... I don't know, Miles. You're my brother and she's my best friend. What happens if it doesn't work? I...you're my brother, I wouldn't lose you. But I would lose her...." Tears started welling up in her eyes and Miles realized that he hadn't thought it all the way through. "You have no idea how much I want it to work, but...the odds...I don't know."
Miles took her hand and pulled at it, "Alright, c'mon. You need to talk to her about that because it isn't up to me whether you lose her or not." While she protested at first, he started dragging her unwilling ass back to his room and opened the door. "Spence?" He nudged Charlotte further in and jerked his chin towards the balcony, "Go on."
But I think I’ve found the light.

She didn't know how long Miles had been gone but in the time that he had, she had contemplated leaving three times and when she finally got the nerve to even move from the balcony, she heard the door open.
She tried her best to wipe her tears away, hoping that her mascara hadn't run. She turned and saw the twins and her hope blossomed. The urge to run to Charlotte and beg her forgiveness was overwhelming but she stood her ground, still unsure of how she felt about everything.
She did leave the balcony and stepped back inside the room. "Charlie...I'm...I'm not sorry I slept with Miles. I want you to know that. But if it makes you uncomfortable...I'm..." she paused and looked at Miles. She wasn't even sure whether she'd be able to give him up. They were both important to her.
"I'll back off." She finally said. "I don't want to lose either of you." She could feel the tears starting again but she controlled herself. They didn't have to deal with her emotions.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Miles stood behind his sister, his arms crossed against his chest. If it was anyone else other than him standing between the two of them, he knew it wouldn't have been an issue. Nobody got between them and he wasn't sure he wanted to be either. Although, he knew what Charlotte was getting at. She'd expected things to happen much slower than they had, a kiss, handholding maybe. Not sex. Sex often led to a much stronger emotional connection for virgins and, well, Miles had been the only virgin among the three of them. Her fears were warranted, but Miles also didn't regret what happened. He was no more emotionally involved with Spencer than he had been before because he wasn't sure there was a way to be more in love with her.
His expression softened when Spencer looked at him and he saw the hint of tears behind her eyes. She was scared, it came off her in waves. To be fair, he couldn't quite figure out which of them it was coming from because his sister had the same fears. He cleared his throat pointedly at Charlotte and she looked back at him with a frown before turning back towards her best friend.
"I...you know, I've known the way Miles felt about you forever. And I always wanted you two together.... I always thought about how cool it would be if we got to be sisters," She looked down at her feet and chewed on her lip, "But with that comes the potential that it doesn't happen. That you two don't work. He's my brother, Spencer, and there's no way I could lose him." She looked back up and felt the tears starting to roll down her cheeks, "But I could lose you. And that...I...I can't handle that."
Miles hated seeing the two of them so torn up, both in tears. He rubbed the back of his neck, "Can we just accept that nobody has to lose anyone? I mean, we've all known each other long enough, it shouldn't be that hard."
But I think I’ve found the light.

Charlotte's words opened the floodgates again and she couldn't help but laugh at Miles' response and before she knew it, she practically ran towards her best friend and hugged her tightly. "Are you fucking kidding me? You're never losing me. I'm going to be your parasite for as long as I live." She said through her tears.
She squeezed Charlotte with one hand while the other blindly groped for Miles'. "You're right, Smiles. You're absolutely right." She stepped back from Charlotte enough just to plant a wet kiss on her cheek before she was hugging her again.
It had been a dramatic few minutes and she was just glad nothing was ruined. That had to be the worst time of her life, being on that balcony, agonising over something that wouldn't ever happen.
Even if her and Miles didn't happen, Charlotte was her person, that wasn't ever going to change. They'd been through too much shit together to let something like a relationship gone wrong get in the way.
She pulled away again from Charlotte and wiped her tears, not even caring about her mascara running anymore. "Ugh this is stupid. Crying is stupid." She laughed, not even realising she was still holding on to Miles' hand.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Charlotte clung to her best friend for dear life. When she pulled away, Charlotte scrunched her face against the kiss that was planted on her cheek. She laughed and rubbed her best friend's back, her eyes lifting to her brother who was holding fast to the other free hand of Spencer. It made her feel a little more comfortable, knowing that they had each other, but that Spencer wasn't willing to pull away from her.
Miles kept a tight hold to her hand when she pulled back from his sister once more and he brushed his thumb across the inside of her wrist, trying to keep the relief from his face that the two of them were okay. Charlotte was smiling through her own tears and she brushed Spencer's hair out of her face, "Well, now that that's been cleared up. I, uh, I need to get back to my own date. Because some of us decided to wait until the end of the party for our shenanigans." She wiggled her eyebrows and smiled at the two of them. "Oh and side note, James and Maya and Will and Cassidy were also missing from the party. Ya nasties." She smirked and gave her best friend one more tight squeeze before ruffling her brother's hair and making her exit back down the hall, wiping her eyes.
Once his sister was out, Miles slid his arms around Spencer's waist and pulled her closer to him, "See? Told you I could handle it."
But I think I’ve found the light.

Spencer laughed when Charlotte spoke. "Go get 'im girl." She wiped her eyes with the back of her free hand and pursed her lips as she watched her best friend walk out of the room.
When Miles spoke up, Spencer threw her arms around Miles' neck. She looked up at him, adoration clear in her eyes. "You did." She said. "What else d'you wanna tell me?" She asked, tilting her head to the side as she regarded him with a sultry look. "Wait...no that's not sexy. I've probably got snot all over my face." She laughed lightly as she removed herself from him to walk to the bathroom.
She washed her face, relieved to have the cool water on her very skin. She looked a fright as she looked into the mirror. "Oh my God..." she snorted. She wouldn't be surprised if any and all thoughts of a second round were dismissed by Miles.
She continued to wash her face until all her makeup was gone before grabbing a towel to wipe off her face. "I think I need to reapply my makeup." She called out to Miles as she wiped off the excess water dripping down her neck.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Miles slipped his arms around her waist and tilted his head with a smile. He had never seen her look at someone the way she was looking at him, but he also wasn't sure if he just had goggles on because he was as happy as he was. She tried for sultry and he laughed when she did until she pulled away from him. At that, he wasn't too thrilled with. He groaned and followed after her, "You look fine, Spence, come back."
He settled himself against the doorway as she washed her face and couldn't help the goofy grin on his face. While she didn't think she was all that beautiful without the makeup, he couldn't decide which he liked better. She looked more familiar without it all. Like she did when they were younger, back when he'd first started to fall for her. She started to wipe her face off with the towel and he frowned, "Only if you think so. You know I think you look good no matter what."
He pushed off away from the doorway and came up behind her, slipping his arms around her from behind. Miles kissed her shoulder and then the side of her head and gave her a light squeeze, "What do you say to a date, ya know, once we get back to the States?"
But I think I’ve found the light.

She turned when she heard his response and she bit her lower lip to stop herself from smiling too widely. Miles was going to be the end of her, she knew it. She never really wore makeup for anyone but herself but hearing him say that felt different.
Smiling when his arms looped around her, Spencer placed her own arms over his, slipping her fingers through his, swaying a little. This was far beyond what she usually did with her previous conquests and surprisingly, she felt okay with it.
Looking at Miles in the mirror, she was struck by the familiarity of the whole scene. She was smiling more openly and he had such a goofy grin on his face that she was beginning to find so endearing. It was such a picturesque moment.
She almost forgot that life in the States was a little different than the bubble they were currently in here in London. Her little sister came to mind, her side job, school, everything came crashing down and for a moment, the smile disappeared.
It reappeared just as soon and she turned her head so she could give him a soft kiss on his cheek. "That would be nice." She responded, nuzzling his cheek for a while longer. "I'd love that." And she would. Maybe she can handle everything. She will. As long as Miles was around, she will.
"Alright, let's go and see how Charlie and Max are faring." She chuckled and spun out of his embrace, still clinging on to his hand. She didn't want to let go. Not yet.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
His eyes never left her face and when the smile slipped, his eyebrows pulled together. If it hadn't resurfaced as quickly as it did, he might have started to panic. Already he was unsure of himself, even though he tried his hardest not to be with her. He'd seen the guys she went for, confident and smooth-talking. He knew he wasn't a smooth talker, but he could try to be confident. All he had to do was watch his uncle and the way Will held himself. They both seemed so comfortable with themselves like they could do anything without question.
Miles wasn't quite sure he'd ever get there.
She kissed his cheek and his arms tightened around her, his shoulders releasing the tension that they'd held. His eyes slid shut and he smiled, "Good, I would, too." Charlotte was going to need to help him. Or maybe he could ask his brother on this one...perhaps not. His mind filtered through all of the people he could trust to steer him in the right direction for his first date. Not only with Spencer, but his first date period. He pressed his cheek against hers before pecking it lightly.
He gripped her hand and nodded, "I suppose we could do that. Are you...I mean...would you..." Miles laughed and shook his head, unaware of why he felt so shy now. "Stay with me tonight, in my room."
But I think I’ve found the light.

In the brief moment that she was in his embrace, Spencer felt safe. She felt kept together. Like nothing could permeate the bubble of warmth and comfort Miles brought with him. Reality quickly set in, of course and she though she still felt the warmth from his hand in hers, Spencer was already counting down the time to the end.
Her heart skipped a beat when he asked her to stay with him and she melted. He was so heart achingly sweet. She pulled his hand up to her lips and nodded. "There's honestly nowhere else I'd rather be tonight."

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Miles smiled when she answered the way he'd been hoping for her to. It was still a little unnerving that he was going to have her sleeping in his bed with him, even with the events that had just occurred. He was eighteen years old, it was only fair that he finally start acting like it. His anxiety had always been paralyzing and often made him revert back to a younger mindset, but Charlotte had eased him out of it during the majority of their teenage years, it was only fair that Spencer take the reins for this part.
He pulled her towards the Hall and noted that they would be following his older brother and his best friend in as well. He clamped his lips together and tried not to think about that although he could understand what Charlotte was feeling earlier. Her whole family, save for Eva, had bailed with their dates and left her to hope that her date even showed up. If Max hadn't, well, he supposed things would have likely not turned out the way they had. Small victories.
Miles sifted through the crowd to find Charlotte and the rest and smiled when he spotted his twin cozily sitting beside her date. "You wanna see if we can get better music playing? Or do you want to hit the bar?"
But I think I’ve found the light.

Slipping her fingers through his, she followed him along the hall, a smile on her face that she couldn't erase. Despite her previous worry, she was also pretty happy with how her life is right now. She was in London in winter in a dress that was more expensive than her entire wardrobe holding hands with a boy she had known half her life.
It was surreal to say the least, but she didn't mind it at all.
Just as soon as Miles spotted Charlotte, so did Spencer and she squeezed Miles' hand. "Dude, they look so damn cute together." Spencer grinned before turning to the bar and nodding. "A drink sounds great but we do need to have them play better music than this. I mean I love me some classical music but they've got to have a better option."
She turned to Miles with a grin. "How much trouble would we get into if we sneak in some Hozier in there?"

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
"I'm just glad that she looks happy," He said quietly. It was all he'd wanted for her and now that she could see that he had it, he thought that she'd be able to finally let herself have it, too. She was always so hesitant with her feelings, but even from the distance she was sitting from him, he could feel it vibrating off of her.
When she answered about the music, he couldn't say he was surprised. And he didn't blame her either because it was a little mind numbing with the current music selection. Her question did make him laugh and he glanced around as if it was some sort of conspiracy, "I think we could do it." He straightened up and laughed again, "Nah, my grandmother is cool, and the people here could use some tweaking in their music taste."
Miles placed his hand on the small of her back, "Go chat up the maestro over there with the electronic set-up and I'll grab some drinks, yeah?"
But I think I’ve found the light.
