Bailey's reaction to the place reminded Gabriel so much of what they used to have before. She hadn't been a micromanager then but she had always been detail oriented. She was the method to his madness.
He simply stood by the door, leaning against it as the woman moved in further into whatever space the apartment allowed. He should have brought Daniel and Violet with him but he had decided to send them home for good. They had been stuck with him for way too long and too far away from their families. It had been bittersweet for all of them. He did, however, tell them that if they ever needed a job, they're more than welcome to find him again.
Smiling, he pushed against the door to walk over to her, placing his hand in the small of her back. "Yeah. Anything sounds good right about now." He chuckled.
It didn't take that long for them to designate places for the boxes and by the time they were done, they still had some sunlight. And the apartment actually looked more like an apartment instead of a storage space.
It was a pretty nice layout too, almost similar to the one he had in Montana, so putting the boxes into place wasn't that difficult. The difficulty lies in the unpacking, which is something he had dreaded the moment he got there.
Another was buying new furniture. He knew there was a store that sold literally everything he needed here in the way of making a home but going there was going to be a chore. Maybe having Bailey around would help though. She was the taskmaster he needed.
Bringing out two bottles of beer from the fridge, he handed one out to Bailey before taking his phone out from his pocket. "Enzo's still have the best pizza around?"

Bailey's crazy eased back within herself once things started looking a little less hectic. She couldn't focus in chaotic spaces and she didn't focus on anything other than the chaotic space until it was no longer chaotic. She liked having things to do though and situating the love of her life's apartment, was definitely something to do.
With her hands on her hips, she was just looking at all of the boxes throughout the rest of the rooms. He dangled a beer in front of her face and then mentioned pizza which happened to be the best way to her heart. She turned to face him as she was lifting the bottle to her lips. After a satisfying swig, she nodded, "Yessir. What would even possess you to ask that? Enzo's is and will always be the best pizza place in the world!"
She left him to call for pizza and danced around the boxes with her beer lifted in the air. Bailey didn't care if she looked ridiculous or if there wasn't any music. She moved around his apartment easily, before she came across a couple of boxes with her nickname on them. Her eyebrows pulled together and she chewed on her lip, glancing over her shoulder. "Uh, what is this?" She called out when she didn't hear his voice any longer from the phone.

"Fair point." Gabriel pointed at her and pressed number 5 on his phone. The one constant he had was his phone book. From his Moto Razr back when he was a teen until now, the numbers on there have been constant. He added a few but the speed dials were always the same five numbers he'd always had. Will was number one, Bailey was two, Violet and Daniel were three and four and five was his favourite pizza place.
As he placed their usual orders, he turned to watch Bailey dance and he got lost in it. A smile curved on his lips and he almost didn't hear the person on the other line. He distractedly gave his address before slipping his phone in his pocket after ending the call.
He didn't even realise she had found her way to the two boxes with her nickname on it and he grimaced.
"Uh..." he cleared his throat and walked over to the boxes. "I uh...those are uh..." he shook his head and laughed. "You...they're things you gave me and the letters we used to write each other when we were kids...I couldn't throw them away."

Her fingers traced over the cardboard on her name and she glanced up at him when he started struggling for a way to explain what she was looking at. His explanation made no sense to her at first, but then he listed the things that he'd kept and her expression slacked in surprise. She thought back to her own apartment in the closet where the boxes of the same exact things were sitting and it filled her with more relief than she could express.
Bailey didn't hesitate for very long before she started opening the first box that had her name on it. She set her beer down gingerly, making sure that it didn't spill as she started diving into the box in front of her. The first thing she grabbed was one of the mixtapes that she'd made him, one of many. She looked closely, reading through the songs and snorted. "Oh my god. Gabriel, this is like a treasure chest!" She set it aside and started diving for more.
When she came across one of the notes she'd written him, she could feel tears starting to fill her eyes. It didn't say anything particularly sappy or interesting, but her heart squeezed regardless. She could almost feel exactly how she did the day she wrote it. "I can't believe you kept all of these."

He grimaced when she opened the box to rifle through it. It felt like she was opening up his chest cavity and swimming around his innards. Just because she had as much rights to go through it, didn't mean he didn't feel attached to it and wanted it all to himself.
Gabriel joined her on the floor as he looked through it as well. He hadn't opened it in years because he knew he would be too weak to resist the call to come back here and want to be with her again.
He looked up when she spoke and he saw the tears in her eyes. He let out a slow breath and smiled. "Why would I throw you away?" He asked before taking her hand and scooting closer. He rummaged through the box and found one particular item that he handed to her.
It was a leather necklace with a varnished wooden oval charm with their names on it. "Remember you gave this to me the first night we..." his voice trailed off, hoping she understood that it was the night they first made love.

His question literally made her want to die because it was so perfect. He was so perfect. The tears started sliding down her face and she gripped his hand tight when he moved closer to her. As if she needed anymore reason to see that they'd been made for each other. She'd known it ten years ago, or rather, she'd been so sure of it before he left. Every year that passed only made it more obvious, until the year that he left and every year after that when he didn't call.
He handed her a necklace and immediately she felt her stomach clench at its symbolism. They'd lost their virginities together, something that every girl wished for. It had been rough and awkward and the farthest thing from graceful, but they'd gotten through it together which was far more than she had ever expected. How could it have been so long ago? She didn't like to believe that ten years had passed between them, especially when she considered what their lives would have been like had he stayed.
She wondered, more often than she'd admit, if they'd have gotten married and had kids. Or if they'd have traveled the world together. It was like a fantasy she played out when things got hard. Bailey's fingers curled around the charm and she chewed on her lip, giving a small nod in acknowledgment to his statement. It was all she could do.
Thinking back to her own boxes, she knew she had things of similar value, things she'd forgotten about at all costs for the sake of her sanity. "Fantastic, I'm a sobbing mess and you're just sitting there looking like God. How unfair is that," She finally laughed and started wiping at her eyes, setting the charm lightly back in the box.

When Bailey started properly crying, Gabriel started to panic. He rubbed his thumb over Bailey's hand and let her cry. He hadn't expected it to bring out so many emotions but even he was starting to get a little teary watching her cry.
Gabriel laughed at Bailey's remark as he scooted closer to put an arm around her. "Come on, these are good memories, Diz. We had really good times together." He reminded her as they sifted through more things before the pizza guy arrived.
He pressed his lips against her jaw and jumped up to greet their food. Once he paid, he walked back to where he had left Bailey and placed the pizza on one of the boxes around them. "I got your favourite." He grinned, opening up the box and letting the steam escape. "Oh jeez the smell." He sighed contentedly.

They were good memories, followed by empty memories, that was what made it so hard. She curled into his side and turned her head into his shoulder, nodding and trying to ignore his use of past tense. She could hardly focus on the good when she'd spent so long trying to smother the memories because it just brought back the hollow feeling she had when he left.
And now he was back and she didn't know for how long because he didn't even know for how long. After some regaining of her composure, she continued looking through the box, doing her best not to linger too long on anything else. She could only do so much before she wouldn't stop crying. His lips pressed to her jaw before he went to answer the door and she patted her cheeks in an attempt to get herself situated before he came back. Bailey reached for her beer and started drinking it faster. Because wasn't it a good idea to get drunk so that she didn't think about anything upsetting?
He opened the box and she immediately reached inside to grab a slice that she could shove into her face. "Best. Pizza. Ever. I told you."

Gabriel couldn't help but laugh at how fast Bailey reached for a slice. He took one after her and happily munched on it.
"Yeah yeah. It wasn't like I doubted you." He poked her on the side and continued eating as he used his free hand to rifle through the box.
"Oh my God, I totally forgot about this. Remember this?" He took out a ticket stub for an R-rated movie. "I can't believe we didn't get caught that night." He laughed, showing it to Bailey.
The mood in the room had shifted and he was trying his best to steer it back to normal. It had been a mistake not to hide the boxes in his own room but he had unfortunately overlooked it.
He refused to make this occasion sad though. He knew he probably had a lot to make up for with Bailey but for now, he wanted her to be happy with how they were.

As he held up the stub, she leaned forward to read which one it was and she snorted, "You were the one that almost got us caught. Couldn't stop giggling and acting all guilty. You were really quite terrible at that. Good thing I'm suave as hell." She grinned. More like the other way around. Bailey knew that she was not the smoothest one between the two of them, but she liked to pretend.
She pulled out a pair of glasses from her early days and she scrunched her nose up, "You kept these to mock me for the rest of my life, didn't you?" She put them on her face and dropped them down on her nose, "How do I look?" They were ridiculous, bright purple with small daisies lining the sides, a little too round for her face, and not very comfortable. She'd hated them the moment she got them, but that was what she got for letting her father pick them out. He tried so hard to think 'girly' that he didn't think past that. It was just a blessing that she had gotten contacts not much longer after he picked them out.
Bailey plucked them off of her face and set them back in the box. "You know, you have far more embarrassing things in your boxes than I have in mine."

Gabriel laughed and shook his head. "Yeah, you're the suave one. You squeak when you have to lie." He raised an eyebrow at her as he smirked. The smirk softened the longer he looked at her smile though.
Watching her harkened to a time when all they ever did was lie in bed talking all day and he could just look at her and his heart would beat steadily, knowing she was his.
He was forced out of the memory when she addressed him. He saw the glasses and he couldn't help but laugh. "Oh my God yes." He took another bite from his pizza and narrowed his eyes as he pretended to think about it. "Could be better." He twisted around to open the next box to find the sticker book they had started when they were really young. He flipped through the pages and finally found the one he was looking for and peeled it off to slap over her lip. "Perfect." He laughed at the comically big moustache stick on her face.
"Wait wait." He fished his phone out and took a picture of her, laughing as he did so.
When she revealed that she also had a box and Gabriel leaned forward. "I have to see that. You have to let me see that box." He nodded determinedly.
They continued rifling through the boxes until the pizza and their beers were finished. Gabriel checked his watch and whistled. "We haven't even cut my hair yet."

Bailey posed for him as he stuck the ridiculous sticker on her upper lip. She made a duck face and peeled it off once he dropped his phone, wrinkling her nose at the sting. She couldn't complain about the picture. That was just something they'd always done. When one looked utterly absurd, they documented it for their eyes only. It was a pinkie swear that she took quite seriously, even if she did often want to share the goofy pictures with the world. He probably had more of her than she had of him.
"If you come over again, I'd be willing to show you. I haven't touched them in years," She trailed off with a shrug. Maybe it was better that she wait for him to come back to open them anyway. The memories were made bearable having him so near. She didn't have to feel quite as alone as she had before.
He looked at his watch and her stomach dropped. She wasn't ready to go home yet. Bailey chewed on her lip and looked at him, "I got a tad distracted, that's my fault." She wouldn't mind doing it still, however, she wasn't sure if he'd want her to after having a drink. Plus, it was late and he was probably exhausted. She really should prepared to go. Bailey stood up and smoothed her shirt down, "I can go."

"If." He repeated with a chuckle. There was not a chance in hell that he wasn't going to go back to the place he had called home for at least two years before he had left.
Bailey's reaction to him looking at his watch wasn't something he had expected. "Wait what? No. You can't go. You need to cut my hair. And look through the pictures and letters in these boxes." He said, almost in a panic. "It's not even late." He shrugged.

The way he panicked made her feel more at ease. He wasn't trying to kick her out the way that she thought. Her expression softened and she tentatively ran her fingers through his hair, "You really do need it." Even though she couldn't help but love how long it was. She'd always appreciated the way his hair curled around her fingers.
Her hand slid down his cheek and she smiled, "If you're not kicking me out then, let's get your hair cut so we can focus on the nostalgia without interruption, yes?" Because she was fully okay with staying for as long as she could. Like she'd thought before, she wasn't ready to leave. And she didn't know if she'd ever be ready to part ways with him again. Bailey offered her hand to him and took a step back.
It was a good thing she hadn't completely forgotten how to cut a man's hair. Let alone Gabriel's, she couldn't imagine messing it up, she'd probably hate herself.

His eyes closed of its own accord when she reached out to run her fingers through his hair. It was such a soothing gesture that always gave him a sense of security and comfort. That it came from Bailey just increased the feeling.
Gabriel leaned into the touch and opened his eyes, chuckling at her remark. "You know how I like it." He said as he took her hand and helped himself up. He'd had the same hairstyle forever. The old faithful.
"Thanks, Diz." He bent down slightly to press his lips on her forehead as he walked out of the room and grabbed a stool from the kitchen, dragging it out to the living room before finding some newspaper to cover the ground and make clean up easier.
"You know, none of the barbers I've had have been able to cut my hair quite like you've done." He said as he climbed on to the stool.
