With my feelings on fire
Guess I'm a bad liar
Growing up with her father and brother taught Cassidy a thing or two about reading cues. She was good at it but she still had a lot to learn. Most of the time, she kept her observations to herself until there came a time when it had to come out. She was also subtle when she wanted to be. This wasn't the time to be.
When Miles tried to calm her down, she leaned back and nodded. She was likelier to trust Miles when he asked her to calm down than she would anyone else. But she wasn't satisfied with his answer. However, she let it slide because she didn't want to push. "Sure. We'll chalk it up to that." She gave him a smile and nodded. "You sure Max is taking good care of her, yeah?"

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
The phrase she used acknowledged that she knew he wasn't giving her the whole truth. It made him feel guilty, honestly, but his worries, although perhaps justified, were just that right now. They were just worries. Nothing had made him think that it was about to go horribly wrong and he wasn't going to put that thought out there if he could help it.
But she pushed on with questions about whether Max was good for her and taking care of her.
Miles sighed and nodded, "Yes. Max is a good guy, he's cool, a little handsy, but he really likes my sister. Honestly...I'm more worried about him getting caught up in a messy situation that ends in both of them getting hurt." It was even more than that though. There were so many problems behind the abilities that he and his twin had. His was easier to manage, not nearly as wild or erratic. He chewed on his lip and figured he might as well just get out with it, "Lottie's ability...it...it messes with her really bad. Right now, she's super happy and everything is great, but something can tip her emotions out of balance and then..."And by something, he meant their older brother.
But I think I’ve found the light.

Guess I'm a bad liar
When Miles opened up bit by bit, Cassidy slowly understood. Cassidy's ability was catered to animals and the likelihood of her getting at all affected by it was slim. And she had been able to control it the moment she was told how. But it was only because it wasn't a mental ability. At least not in the sense that it attacked her mentally.
From what she could gather from the little Miles was giving her, the twins' abilities had to do with emotions. She couldn't imagine having her mental energy sapped in a way emotion based abilities did.
"Anything is a trigger?" Cassidy asked.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Her question was so innocent and it made Miles feel crappy for having to answer her honestly. He knew that it wasn't something she liked to hear about, the problems that the Spencer siblings had with each other. Miles was more susceptible to forgiving his brother for their parents' behavior than Lottie was, but Miles also remained suspicious of what his brother was hiding from them. Charlotte was just angry with him in all regards, it didn't matter what he did. And that was where his worry stemmed from.
"Yes, anything can trigger her. Most of the time it has to hit something deeper than the surface problems," He kept his eyes fixated on the ground. At least if he said it to the ground he wouldn't see her expression, he'd just have to feel her reaction. "Lottie has been doing really well with school and she's got Spencer who's solid and she has me, obviously I'm not going anywhere either. The two biggest factors are Max and...and Will."
But I think I’ve found the light.

With my feelings on fire
Guess I'm a bad liar
As Miles spoke, Cassidy was drawing her own conclusions and had thoughts of her own on the situation. And the conclusion she settled on at Miles' last words wasn't a happy one. She knew Will had a strained relationship with the twins but she still didn't know how deep it ran.
"So...if one of them screws up...it'd be catastrophic?" Cassidy asked, her heart squeezing slightly at the thought of her people having to clean up that inevitable mess. She was honestly wondering how Charlotte had been going through her adolescence with such a volatile ability. Hell, how did Miles? The idea saddened her and she grabbed his hand in both of hers, squeezing lightly.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
He didn't like speaking poorly of his brother in front of Cassidy. She obviously loved him, more than Miles and Charlotte could understand because she'd known him better than they had the last few months to a year. They were only left with what he'd left behind when they were young. Their perspectives were just different and he didn't want Cassidy to see theirs.
Miles nodded slowly and let out a sigh, "One way or another, it'll be bad because neither of them know how to deal it when it does get catastrophic." He didn't want to necessarily give away the things that his sister did when she got bad, but there was something about the situation that he figured he should give someone a fair warning. If Will screwed up, Cassidy would be the one that was nearest to the situation. "I'm just worried about her."
But I think I’ve found the light.

She didn't like when people sugarcoated things or held back with her but she also wasn't pushy, not entirely. So in the event that Miles were to tell her anything about Will, she would most likely appreciate it a lot more than him trying to tell her something that actually wasn't true. But she couldn't know so she didn't feel any different.
Cassidy winced at the idea of having to "deal" with a destructive ability.
"Miles...I don't mean to push, I really don't. But...what could Will possibly do to trigger Charlotte?" She asked, biting her lower lip, not knowing whether it was appropriate for her to even ask.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
The question she asked, while he knew she didn't mean to push and while he knew that she didn't see much wrong with Will now, he didn't think she wanted to know his answer. After the initial argument between Miles and Will, Charlotte had her slice of the fight, defending her twin. She hadn't gotten into their own problems, not really and Charlotte was avoiding them entirely because she didn't want to be close to Will. He was not the brother she wanted, she was still the brother that she lost. Miles was making the effort for Cassidy, but he hadn't forced Lottie to do the same.
What he wanted to say was that Will wasn't a good person and that he'd been the worst brother in the last twelve years for bailing. That he hadn't even made a step in the direction of making things better between the three of them. He was getting off easy because Miles wouldn't be rude to him, but Charlotte still held all of her anger over the situation and he had made no advances towards her. "Just being around Will is hard on Lottie. She's held onto what happened before and...well I don't think he's really tried to fix anything with her."
Their older brother's presence alone had her on edge and some of the things that he said didn't help his situation with them. "I'm not putting this all on Will. Max has equal opportunity to hurt her," He said, dropping his eyes again, "Will has just done it before..."
But I think I’ve found the light.

Guess I'm a bad liar
Hearing these words coming from Miles was a little hard to swallow. Although she wasn't the type to blindly side with just one person, it threw her for a loop when she realised that whatever had happened between the siblings caused the people she thought she knew well to be strangers to her.
She also realised that this was between family. If she went between them, or in lieu of either side, she would cause even more trouble. Even if she wanted them to reconcile, she had to know that the only way they would is to do it on their terms.
She squeezed Miles' hand and sighed. "She has you and Spencer, that's what matters. And if you need anything from me, just say the word." She smiled reassuringly at Miles.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Cassidy was right, his sister did have him and her best friend. But it still made him wonder if it was enough. Charlotte and Will had been much closer when they were younger and Max was Charlotte's dreamboat. Sure he could live with just having Cassidy and Charlotte, but he was more comfortable being alone than his twin was.
"I will. Honestly it's just a head's up. I know how she can get and I don't want anything bad to happen," He shook his head and sighed. It was his role as her twin to be over protective. If he wasn't then he didn't know who would be. Miles looked up at Cas and smiled, "Thanks though. For listening and everything."
But I think I’ve found the light.

Cassidy nodded, understanding the necessity, though not entirely yet. She hadn't spoken to Charlotte quite as in depth as she felt she should have. She understood the pain caused by a familial abandonment. Charlotte had been lucky to be saddled with a twin but they had experienced the same abandonment.
"Hey, you're like...my first adult best friend. Listening to you is a large part of the job description." She chuckled and leaned over to hug him tightly. "I'm here always. As long as I'm not swamped with work and school, you can just call me up and we can gab." She gave him a wide smile that caused her eyes to close.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Miles hugged her back tighter and placed his hand on the back of her head, his chin resting on her shoulder. "I know you are. And same, seriously. If you need anything, I'm just a text away," He pulled back and patted her cheek with a grin. It was kind of funny that she was basically the only real friend he had. It was one thing to be surrounded by teammates that he grew to befriend, but they were school friends. They weren't life friends.
She was likely to remain in his life and he hoped it would be as his sister-in-law. "Hey, I gotta meet up with Spencer and I still have to change and whatnot. I'll see you later, yeah?" He started standing up, his hand dropping to hers.
But I think I’ve found the light.

Guess I'm a bad liar
She leaned into the cheek pat and with all honesty, Cassidy felt ten times lighter than she had when she first sent the text to Miles. She was finally at peace for the day just waiting to go back to the man she loved to give him the love she had for him. She was forever grateful for Miles being part of her life.
Cassidy perked up with a cheeky grin when Spencer was mentioned. "Mmhmm. Send my love to her and Charlotte, yeah?" She folded her hands on her lap when he let go of her. As she watched him walk away, Cassidy felt a little pin prick in the lower region of her abdomen. She winced before picking up her book and finishing her hot chocolate.
Once that was done, she went back to Will's with a smile on her face.
