imma say all the words inside my head
Don't you tell me what you think that I could be
She didn't need to ask him twice as he climbed in bed, making sure he didn't squish her. Sleep was probably the last thing on his mind too. He lid an arm under her head while the other curled up around her waist. She felt unnaturally small in his arms and he tried to ignore how sad that made him feel.
Dylan pressed his lips on top of her head and sighed softly.
"I'm not going anywhere, alright? I made that mistake already."
It was a promise he intended to keep. If not for her, for himself. He had to help Adrian see things through because she obviously needed it.

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
As he climbed in beside her, she felt tension in her shoulders starting to release. She cuddled up against him and her fingers curled in his shirt. As much as she hated it, she missed him and she'd only been apart from him for a little over a day. Hard to believe and hard to accept, but the truth nonetheless.
Adrian buried her face in his shoulder and nodded at his words. It wasn't what she wanted to hear in the moment, given that she knew she was only going to make him miserable, but it was ultimately all she'd wanted from him. It was honestly all she'd wanted from anybody; all she wanted was for someone to stick it out with her, but no one ever did. She looked up at him and tapped her fingers against his chest as she smoothed out where they'd been gripping his shirt. "Did you tell Cassidy?"
Isn't she a dream come true?

Dylan took issue with how much he loved it when Adrian curled into him. The way she clutched at his t-shirt and the way she buried her face in his shoulder, it filled him with an emotion he didn't, or rather didn't want to know. He didn't want to believe that all Adrian had to do was touch him and he would bend to her will. Still, after all the time they had spent with each other, getting to know each other, knowing intimate details of each other's lives, he didn't want to admit what he was feeling for her.
Adrian's question had him looking down at her with a shake of his head.
"She's going through something. Something that she will tell you in due time, I'm sure so don't be mad at me for not telling you." He gave a small smile before it disappeared.
"She'll be coming to the funeral though. I'm making arrangements for her."

When he shook his head, she felt a rush of relief. She had a feeling that she already knew the answer before he said it, but the confirmation made it better. If he'd told his sister, there was no doubt that Cassidy would have been there in the room with her, too. She didn't need that kind of pressure added to her already stressful situation. Her boyfriend was complicated enough, Adrian didn't want to make it worse. And when Dylan said that she was dealing with something, Adrian was struck with another momentary wave of guilt. It had to be important for him to keep the news to himself, which only made her wonder what would have happened if she'd succeeded.
Adrian nodded slowly and chewed on the inside of her cheek. All she could do was hope that by the time of the funeral, she would look like less of a creature and more human. She didn't want Cassidy to know and she also hated herself for not thinking about her best friend when she slid into the water.
Her eyes started filling again and she pressed her face to his chest, trying not to let them fall. She didn't want to feel guilty for wanting to be with her mother.
Isn't she a dream come true?

Dylan stroked her hair when she buried her face in his shirt again. He adjusted himself so they were both lying down on the small bed comfortably. He didn't know how long they laid there but a few nurses reminded him of the visiting hours several times. He told them all he wasn't going anywhere. Eventually, they gave up and let him stay.
He was still playing with her hair well into the night. He had forgotten lunch and dinner but he still didn't move from the bed. He didn't even dare ask whether Adrian was asleep or not, nor did he jostle her even as his arms turned numb a couple of times.

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
There was an overwhelming sense of relief as he ran his fingers through her hair and kept his arms around her. If she were going to be honest, it was everything she needed. She didn't want to admit that she needed him as much as she did, but now that her mother was gone, he was the closest thing she had next to his sister. Adrian didn't have any family and while her and Dylan were still hesitating and avoiding the labels talk, he was the only person that knew her inside and out now. He'd seen her at her absolute worst. But she still wouldn't say that she loved him anymore than she'd say that she needed him.
Instead, she just accepted him being there and let the anger she'd felt earlier drain from her completely. He didn't deserve it and it was too much energy to maintain. As they laid there, she remained quiet, her cheek against his chest and her fingers curled in his shirt. Her eyes were raw from as much crying as she'd been doing the last few days and they were heavy, but she avoided sleep for as long as she could. Even in the silence, she was comfortable. For the first time in the last two days, her grief was bearable. She made no sound as he repeatedly told the nurses he wasn't leaving, but she was grateful that they didn't try to force him out.
She'd drifted in and out of sleep, each time she was startled awake, she just curled up closer to him. It was uneasy and restless, so eventually she just gave up on it and traced patterns over his t-shirt. Adrian didn't want to break the silence, but she also sort of wanted to hear his voice again. Especially because she kept thinking about if she'd been successful, she never would have heard it again. "I don't think I could try it again...there's too many things I forgot about that I'd miss." Her eyes were dry as she said it, and her voice clearer than before.
Isn't she a dream come true?

It felt like forever before Adrian spoke and when she did, Dylan felt relieved. More that she sounded sure than the actual content of her words. It felt selfish of him to feel victorious hearing her words. He remembered what someone once said that it was ironic that people think more about what they want out of life when they're so close to death.
Dylan kept quiet for a moment before he leaned down to press his lips against the top of Adrian's head.
"Hot dogs, right?" Dylan wanted to keep it light because he felt that they'd touched way too much on the dark side of this experience. "I'd miss you too."

Her eyes slid shut briefly as his lips pressed against her head. She buried her face in his chest and continued tracing her fingers over his shirt. At his response, she looked up at him with the ghost of a smile on her lips. It felt odd to even think about laughing, but she was relieved for the light-heartedness. It was so much easier than the heavy weight that had been crushing her over the last few months.
When he said that he would miss her, her fingers paused and she took a deep breath. It was strange hearing him say it out loud, although it had been sort of implied given that he'd been the one to save her. She didn't like thinking about what her success would have done to him, whether it was because she'd been worried he wouldn't take it very hard or because she was worried he would take it too hard, she didn't know.
Adrian's hand moved from his chest and rested on the side of his neck, her thumb stroking his jaw, "I'm sorry I reacted the way I did when I woke up. And I'm sorry you had to find me." She still wasn't of a totally right mind, but she knew what she'd done had been out of grief rather than rational thought. All she wanted was her mother and that had been all she was thinking about. Adrian felt guilty for not thinking about all of the other people she had in her life now. "I'm just glad you're here now."

Her apology was met with a shake of his head. It didn't even cross his mind to have her apologise for anything. The course of action she took seemed almost inevitable given her relationship with her mother. Dylan knew that to her, she no longer had anyone to live for. Her deadbeat dad no longer mattered and Dylan was always supposed to be temporary in her life. To her, nothing mattered in her world except her mother. Without her, life was meaningless. Dylan understood, so he didn't expect her to apologise at all.
"I am too. You're meant to be here, Aid. In this world." Dylan offered. It felt strange for him to spew out such pithy comments, given that mere months ago, he didn't even care about her.
Now, he couldn't imagine her being around.

Of course her situation was the way it went. Parents died before their children. It was the natural order of things. However, Adrian had never expected it to be while she was only in her twenties. Nor had she expected her mother not to make it to forty. Parents were supposed to die before their kids, but it was supposed to be after they experienced everything life had to offer. Amelia hadn't gotten to see her daughter be genuinely happy with a family of her own. Instead, she got to see her daughter party and sleep around because the thought of settling down had always terrified her. Amelia was never going to meet Adrian's mini me, if she were to ever have one of her own.
It hardly seemed fair.
"It just doesn't feel right anymore. This world is lacking something now and I don't know how to get it back. I don't know how to live without her," Her eyes starting burning again from the threat of tears, but she pushed back as much as she could so they didn't fall. She sighed, nothing in her life made sense anymore.

"I know, baby." Dylan responded, stroking her hair and pulling her closer. He remembered always being so angry after his mother passed away. He remembered pushing everyone away and wanting to just annihilate everything around him. He grew up so disconnected from everything and he didn't want Adrian to feel that way. It was exhausting and hurt everyone around him, including him.
"Start by breathing." He said softly. "You don't have to go hard. You can grieve. Grieve all you want but keep breathing." Dylan pressed his lips against her cheek for a long moment before pulling away. "And I'm going to be here by your side. Or not. Whatever you choose."

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
She'd be lying if she said that her heart, as wrecked as it was, didn't melt at the term of endearment. She could try as hard as she wanted not to adore every part of him, but she was failing miserably. It was hard to believe that before he knew about her mother, they'd barely speak to each other and when they did it was never pleasant. It was hard to believe that she'd hated him so vehemently at one point because while she'd never say it out loud, she felt quite the opposite now.
As if cued by his words, she took a deep, steadying breath and nodded. Adrian looked up at him as he pulled away and she bit down on her lower lip. The thought of having him anywhere else made her stomach turn and she felt like she could actually be sick. She shook her head first, as an answer and to clear it of the dark path her thoughts went down thinking about him leaving. "I don't...I don't want you to go anywhere." She took another breath and let it out in a sigh, "You and Cassidy are all I have now. I just want to go back home." Back to Montana, away from her old life and the crushing weight that came with it.

Relief washed over Dylan as her words left her mouth. He wasn't going to admit it but those words gave him hope that things were going to turn around. For him, for her and for them as a unit. He hated that that was where his mind was going but he lost the bet to himself that he would feel for Adrian what he didn't think was possible. It scared him that he wanted this. Wanted her. But that was all he could think about now.
"We will. I'll bring you home after the funeral, okay? Just...one last thing to do before we leave." He stroked her cheek, cupping it before pulling her face up to kiss. Softly and achingly gentle, something he had never really done before.

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
The funeral was honestly the last thing she wanted to think about. But he was right, just the last responsibility before she could go back with him. Before, she hadn't been in any rush to go back because of the pressures of school and work. Now all she wanted was to go back so that she could stay busy and distract herself from the emptiness she was bound to feel when she left California.
If it weren't for the fact that she was going to go back with Dylan, she didn't think she'd be able to do it yet. Adrian placed her hand over his and sighed against his lips. He'd been such a constant for her the last few months, taking over the position while her mother was sick. She hadn't been accepting of it at first, but with his lips against hers, she didn't think she could trust anyone else with the job.
When she pulled away, she looked down and chewed on her lower lip, "Would you stay with me for a little while? When we go back?" It was probably the safest thing to do, right? It wasn't like she was asking him to move in or anything, just a couple of weeks? Months?
Isn't she a dream come true?

The request didn't take Dylan much to consider. He had practically been living with Adrian the past few months while he was here so the idea of doing the same when they were back in Montana was a no brainer. The problem was that he was still on California brain where nobody knew him or expected anything of him. California brain meant being who he was meant to be without his family around telling him that this was not him. It also meant he wasn't restrained by the fact that he had fallen for his sister's best friend.
Now, his promise seemed to be unbroken.
"Of course." He nodded and pressed his lips on to her forehead. "As long as you like." He pulled her close to him and closed his eyes. He had no intention of sleeping as he thought of what to tell his father about the California office. He did tell his father he was only overseeing it's building, not running it so he hoped his father understood if he came back home.
Dylan didn't see it then but he was doing a lot for someone he wouldn't admit he loved.
