i know she loves me through thick and thin Surely this couldn't all be because he pushed her too far. Or, it couldn't possibly just be the mere sight of him that forced her to be so riled up. These thoughts shifted within his head when she mentioned leaving. No, he didn't directly reply to that fact. They weren't done yet.
He left his chair, though. And when he did, he rolled his shoulders back instinctively, straightening his posture to its perfect position.
"Educate me, please." He said, this time offering a real genuine spark to his tone; "I'm asking for you help. How often does that happen?"

{ } Pausing, Luxanna faced him as he moved forward, her head tilting as he rolled his shoulders. She realized then that she usually looked at him with suspicion, as if he always had the upper hand. As if he was the one who always knew. It didn't feel that way now.
"You act as if I'm the one always looking for something more," she began, chewing on her bottom lip before she continued. She already knew he would in some form or fashion dismiss her, but that was fine. "And yet, I'm not the one seeking out interactions between us - you are." She held up a hand then, if only just to show she wasn't done.
"That either makes you a liar - or a hypocrite." She offered him a one shoulder shrug. She then briefly wondered if company, in any form, was what he sought out. Physical company was naturally easy and the most risk-free. Was he lonely? No, he couldn't possibly be. "Never to touch, and never to keep. You loved too much, and you dived too deep." ulla

i know she loves me through thick and thin Carter waited to be told just how incorrect he was about his own movements. Sure, he spent a lot of his time ensuring he had a perfect persona. That was good business. But when it came to his personal instances? Things were completely different. With her, specifically, everything had been different.
He did his best not to say a word when she spoke. She deserved his undivided attention, and she got it until he was sure that she was done.
"Correct me if I'm wrong - which I already know I'm not - but I don't ever recall saying I stopped having feelings for you." He explained, purposefully allowing himself to look confused. Had they had a conversation he didn't know about? Should he act like those words had left his lips in any moment between them? He shook his head in dismay, refusing to allow himself to get so worked up considering he'd asked for the information in the first place.

{ } Unable to hide the confusion on her face, she felt briefly tempted to point out that that wasn't necessarily or really at all what she'd been referring to. But then, she also wanted to address what he'd just said.
Instead, she found herself staring at him with the kind of dumbfoundness she hadn't felt a kinship with before. "No," she finally managed, dragging out the word, which in turn only made it sound defensive. "But nor do I recall you ever saying that you did either." Unless, of course, missing someone and enjoying the fun they'd had together was supposed to tell her as much.
"That is hardly what I meant though," she blurted out - perhaps as a way to collect her face. "And that doesn't even begin to-" Stopping herself, Luxanna pressed her lips together. "Never to touch, and never to keep. You loved too much, and you dived too deep." ulla

i know she loves me through thick and thin It was hard for Carter to admit she had a point, and that she was right. He mightn't have said he stopped having feelings, but he never really said he ever had either. That was his own mistake; he didn't even know how to offer those words to anyone. Could she really expect him to find the ability to do so now?
"I imagined it was obvious." He admitted, shrugging his shoulders; "If it wasn't, I apologise."
Then to find out he was wrong about what they were talking about at all felt different. Rarely was he so off the mark. He lowered his eyebrows in confusion; "What did you mean?"

{ } Brows furrowed slightly; perhaps it was wrong of her and in truth, it made her feel like a hypocrite for thinking such of him, but she couldn't shake the notion; he didn't strike her as the kind of person who'd have feelings for anyone. Maybe that word meant something entirely different for him than what it did her?
Dropping her gaze to her hands, Luxanna pursed her lips. Once again, she was overtaken by the meekness that usually shadowed her. She was no longer overtaken by the courage she had felt only moments ago.
Awkwardness washed over her then as she stumbled over her words. "I uhm," she began, but paused. "You should probably..." she continued as she gestured towards the document she'd brought. "Never to touch, and never to keep. You loved too much, and you dived too deep." ulla

i know she loves me through thick and thin It almost looked like Carter had struck yet another nerve. Or somehow, he seemed to switch things back to the way they were. Either way, he was raising his eyebrows with his own stint of surprise. There was curiosity that always boiled beneath the surface of this person, and that was what made her so outwardly intriguing. She just had no idea.
Though she motioned for the details he should have been reading, Carter waved a hand at it. Literally. It could wait, in his eyes. This discussion felt far more pertinent than any memo.
"You should consider that there's a very real reason I stopped trying to pursue you, and it isn't because I was afraid it would overturn business with your father." He admitted. No, that was something for Dom to worry about, if it were to be a worry at all. Carter might have taken his business as serious as anything, but he couldn't help the fundamental things that made him who he was.

{ } A breath of defeat fell from Luxanna's lips; what had she expected? Like, really? Of all the people she could have gotten herself entangled with, she'd surely picked what could only be the most stubborn human left on the planet.
If there was anything Luxanna was overly aware of, it was her own flaws. In some ways, she wondered if being treated as if she was made of glass also made her behave like she was. She briefly wondered if he truly scared her that much, or if her meekness bottled down to having huge amounts of respect for the older man.
She wasn't sure which would be better.
"I can think of a few reasons," she finally replied, taking a few steps backwards so that she could lean her back against the wall. Crossing her feet, she tilted her head so that her brown curls covered her face - and what little dignity she had left. "But please, enlighten me." It wasn't as if she had much else to lose. "Never to touch, and never to keep. You loved too much, and you dived too deep." ulla

i know she loves me through thick and thin Standing still, Carter watched the way she moved. Sticking herself to a wall mightn't have been a purposeful play, but it proved she was willing to stay a while. It also showed just the kind of person she was painted to be; always against the wall when the conversation was pulling her out.
"How about we make it fair." He offered, running his fingers through to the tips of his hair lightly. Ensuring it's perfection like he was stepping into something far greater than a simple conversation.
"You give me a potential reason, and I'll tell you if it's right or not. Honestly."

{ } Luxanna wasn't used to talking about herself. Nor was she used to voice her flaws outright. She had gone through most of her life playing the part everyone seemed so desperate for her to play and not once had anyone stopped to ask her about herself. It was such a strange notion to have the conversation turned in her direction in such a manner it left the green eyed brunette speechless.
And yet, it seemed as if the man standing before her was always looking for her to do just that: for her to be something else than what she'd gone through life pretending to be.
Looking down at her shoes, Luxanna puffed her cheeks out. "Because I'm not very accommodating," she said, as if testing the way the word tasted on her tongue. Was that even the right word? "In terms of, well, anything," she finished with a shrug. "Never to touch, and never to keep. You loved too much, and you dived too deep." ulla

i know she loves me through thick and thin Carter felt honestly engulfed in the instance now. For once, he truly delivered a sense of honest communication with someone who deserved it long ago. But there was honest concern in the way he frowned at what she said. It didn't feel right in the slightest.
"Nor am I." He argued, but he did so with a kind of respect not often brought to an argument. It was a comment not meant to drag her to her knees, but rather, to empathise with her.
In a sense, then, the argument was futile. He shrugged his shoulders almost definitely. "I don't want you to think it was ever something you did, chère."

{ } Green eyes colored with a mixture of surprise and confusion lifted from the floor. There was a certain kind of emotion in his eyes that she hadn't seen before, nor could properly identify without thinking she was merely fooling herself.
"What then?" She asked. She knew better and yet she couldn't shake the unfamiliar sense of suspicion. Surely, someone like Carter didn't willingly allow himself to express genuine emotion and surely not for someone like her.
And even so, Lux couldn't still the rapid thunder inside her chest. "Never to touch, and never to keep. You loved too much, and you dived too deep."

i know she loves me through thick and thin The game was so short lived. After only one attempt, she was looking to him for answers. Of course, Carter carried the almighty response, but he highly doubted it was his to give so easily. He'd never been the best at expressing his emotions simply.
"I can't imagine you think I'm so easy." He replied then, raising his eyebrows in clear enough curiosity. Concern barely plagued his features now, but that was only because he'd grown to control them.
"It's the same reason why most men in dangerous positions leave most women when they grow to mean something." There, it was the most he'd give to the notion of feeling anything for her. He turned his head away pointedly; "Because they're a weakness. And a threat."

{ } Eyebrows shot up in surprise at his initial response. Easy was not a word she would ever use to describe him, though also realized that it held far more meaning than that. In truth, Luxanna had never expected much from him, but she also realized now that perhaps she had expected too little. Perhaps she had been too judgmental of him.
Composure had never been one of her virtues. Still, the brunette's gaze softened ever so slightly. Lost in her own head all this time, she hadn't considered that this had meant anything to him. She also reprimanded herself for thinking so harshly of him - despite all his masks and cloaks, he too, was a human being.
"I'm sorry," she replied. "I didn't think that..." she trailed off. "That's not what I expected to hear," she settled on finally. "Never to touch, and never to keep. You loved too much, and you dived too deep." ulla

i know she loves me through thick and thin Carter felt the genuine drive from her response. An apology wasn't something he really expected from her, and he'd never been all that good at dealing with them. It forced him to roll his shoulders back as if he could stand any straighter than he already was. He cleared his throat almost suddenly.
"No, I can't imagine it was." He admitted, knowing all too well how well he'd worked to keep a facade up. A decent front was everything to someone like him.
From that point on, his eyes fell to the paper in question He took slow steps to reach for it. Once it was in his possession, he looked at is as if he could actually pay attention to its contents. "Thank you." Carter said then, practically dismissive in his own tone.
