The Words
An Open Heart is an open wound to you
How long was long enough to wait after breaking up with an ex to start dating another person? Did that time frame change if you did the breaking up? How about when the ex had it coming big time? What if you'd only ever had maybe one or two serious relationships in your life time? All of these questions had been cycling through Nick's mind for the past month. Since Halloween night when he got shot in the chest only inches away from it being a fatal shot, Nick had been thinking nonstop about the first person who had been by his bed during his drugged up moments. He didn't remember much of their conversation early on, not until he realized his mother was coming and he'd sobered up, though it was likely just the meds wearing off by then.
And yet, despite not knowing exactly what had transpired between them early on, Nick felt differently. More intensely perhaps. She'd been there when he woke up, had gone back to his apartment with his little brother to make sure he got settled after being discharged, even if her apartment was right beside his, and she'd helped him with whatever he'd needed until he was fully healed. If that wasn't worthy of a date, he didn't know what was. Of course he feared the rejection, for all he knew, she could have a boyfriend. Not that he ever saw another guy coming or going from her apartment, let alone the same guy. She worked a lot, too, so maybe she didn't have the time for one? Or maybe there was a hot doctor that she was googoo about, but had yet to be asked out by him. The possibilities were endless and disheartening, but he knew he had to try. If he had been at home, maybe he'd have gone to do it face to face, but he had gone to his parents' house to help Jamie with a science project for the fair that was coming up. He supposed that his sudden urgency to ask her out was also due to the pressure his family was putting on him to do it. They'd only been begging him to since the moment he broke up with his ex. Layla and Patch had gone to pick up food, Jamie was in the living room watching some weird apocalyptic show and so Nick figured his only chance was now. His fingers shook a bit from his nerves as he dialed Halley's number, and while it rang, he could feel his heart thumping in his chest.

And though it's just a line to you
For me it's true
A month had passed since Nick got shot and taking care of him to full recovery had sadly been the highlight of Halley's month. She'd gotten closer to Nick and his crazy family and she couldn't be happier. The amount of nudging and winking she had to endure at the hands of Nick's family was no picnic though.
As much as she wanted their relationship to progress, and with as many interactions they'd had that got her hopes up, Halley was almost certain Nick was not going to be ready to jump into another relationship. Which sucked in so many ways because she did have the sense that Nick liked her.
So she gave up hope that it was ever going to happen and tried to get real with herself. Sure, she could have asked him out herself but she probably wouldn't be able to deal with the rejection.
It wasn't often that Halley had the time for a hot mug of tea and a good book to curl up to in her bed while Arya snuggled next to her but when she had the opportunity, she seized it by the horns. And if it wasn't for her phone clattering on the bedside table, she wouldn't have known it was ringing. Arya, annoyed by the sudden disturbance, leapt off the bed and went over to her scratching post.
Halley's eyes were still trained on her book as she swiped her finger on the screen and held the phone in between her shoulder and ear. "Hiyuh?" She chirped distractedly, sipping on her tea.
And never seemed so right before

An Open Heart is an open wound to you
The voice on the other end of the phone sounded distracted and Nick's resolve began to deflate. This was probably the dumbest thing he was about to do. She didn't sound like she'd looked at the number before answering and he felt completely awkward for calling. He couldn't back down now, she'd answered and he was going to have to suck it up and hunker down. "Uh, yeah. Hey! Hal...it's Nick. Adams. Nick Adams, your neighbor. With the dog and ya know, the bullet hole," He laughed uncomfortably and scrunched his face together.
Already he wanted to climb into a hole and bury himself under mounds of dirt. She was going to think he was on pain meds again. "I'm sorry, this just got super weird. Halley, what're you doing tomorrow night?" There, he'd done it. He'd asked what she was doing, prime spot for sealing the deal. If she was busy tomorrow, well, he wasn't sure he'd recover. Nick was not quite the best at thinking on his feet.
He peeked around the corner to make sure his brother had remained in place. The last thing he needed was Jamie recording him and sending it all throughout the family. Patch and Layla were still out and he still had all the time in the world to be rejected.

Halley's phone almost slipped from her shoulder as she put her mug down and straightened up when she heard Nick's voice on the other end. There was a sharp intake of breath before she pressed the phone against her ear with one hand. "Nick! Hi! Yes." She responded just as wildly.
The grip she had on her book tightened as she practically vibrated in bed. She had to calm herself down before her excitement showed on the other end of the phone call.
Taking a deep breath, she choked slightly when he asked about her plans tomorrow night. She had the rest of the week off and she had planned to ask Emma if she could hang out with her but she didn't say any of that to him. Instead, she went silent for a while before clearing her throat.
"Sorry. Sorry. I uh...nothing. I'm not doing anything tomorrow." Somehow that sounded even worst than the silence. "What's up?" She asked in what she thought was a nonchalant tone.
And never seemed so right before

An Open Heart is an open wound to you
Nicholas couldn't help but laugh when she started to sound as ridiculous as he did. He rubbed the back of his neck as he waited for her answer. It was damn near killing him while he waited. He considered hanging up and pawning it off as a dropped call, that was plausible right? But he realized it usually showed that the call was ended. He pinched the bridge of his nose and tried to focus on not freaking out entirely. If she was going to say she was busy, he hoped that she put him out of his misery soon.
She apologized and he shook himself out of his thoughts. Halley wasn't doing anything. Nothing tomorrow. His heart quickened and he was certain he would be throwing up before he could get out what he was trying to say. Just as he went to open his mouth, Jamie came sliding into the kitchen on his socks and ran into Nick's stomach, "Ugh, thanks Jame." He nudged his younger brother out of his way and towards the refrigerator where he looked for snacks or a drink. "Uh yeah. Cool! Okay, uh," He stuttered and stammered, losing his train of thought.
Jamie peeked over his shoulder and rolled his eyes, "C'mon Nick, spit it out."
Nick kicked his brother in the butt and shot him a look, "Want to go to dinner with me? I can pick you up at like seven? Or we can do something else, ya know, not as conventional." Because unconventional ran in his blood.

She heard the scuffle over the phone and giggled lightly. "Hey Jamie!" She called over the phone before closing her book and tossing it aside to move. She was getting a little antsy about this phone call, not sure where it was going but having too much hope for where it was going.
There was a muffled urging on Nick's end and then he started blurting out words but all she could hear was "dinner" and "me". He was asking her out on a date. It was finally happening. She was going on a date with Nick, her hot and sweet neighbour. Who she had plenty of silly and romantic fantasies of. And a couple naughty ones that were dreams.
Besides the point. He probably needed an answer.
"Yes. I don't mind. Seven is good. Dinner is good. Conventional is good. Yes." She paused before shaking her head. "I mean...anything you wanna do, I'm game."
She hit her forehead a couple of times with her fist, wondering why exactly she was such a dingus when it came to cute boys.
And never seemed so right before

An Open Heart is an open wound to you
Her little shout out to his brother made him cast a glance at the little nerd that was shoving chips into his mouth. Jamie gave Nick a couple of finger guns and he rolled his eyes. His younger brother struggled to pull himself up onto the counter nearest to Nick in order to get a better listen. After a few minutes of watching him fail, Nick picked him up by the waist and set him down, before gesturing for him to keep it down.
When she agreed he felt his phone slip through his fingers and he juggled it a bit before catching it and frantically putting it to his ear, "Yes? Yeah? You will?" Jamie fist-pumped and went to cheer before Nick clasped a hand over his mouth, "Great, seven it is! Uh, I guess I'll see you tomorrow then, er, if not when I get home." He laughed awkwardly and Jamie threw his head back, his palm connecting with his forehead. "Well, talk soon. Bye Hal!"
As he hung up the phone, Patch and Layla came walking through the door and he breathed out a sigh of relief, leaning against the counter beside his younger brother. He was going on a date. With Halley.
