I think I'll pass on the summer.
Rock climbing was prime girl talk time in the eyes of Faith Maxwell. She found it to be less like work when they were actively doing something. It got boring after a while to sit in a chair with a clipboard and listen to people talk about the same thing day in and day out. She loved her job, of course, in the long haul, but sessions could get tedious at times. Which was often when she called for a meeting with her lifelong friend.
It was also relieving to have a workout buddy that kept her ass in shape. She didn't have to look good for work, but she certainly enjoyed looking good for the play that came later. She'd always been a bit of a twig, so to finally start doing workouts that shaped her figure, she took them very seriously. Faith stood by the entrance, stretching and prepping for the wall while she waited for Emma to show up. Having a kid tended to slow things down, although Faith wouldn't know a thing about that.
Once the doors opened, Faith turned to look at it and her face lit up at the sight of her and she squeaked, "Emmmmm! Babe!" She reached out for her and hugged her tight. "How's the little cutiepie? And I mean Leah not Nick."
Ain't gonna fall for it this time.

My persuasion can build a nation
You'll do anything for me
After sending Leah to the bookstore where Patch was with Jamie, Emma drove over to the indoor sports arena where she had made a date with her best female friend. They didn't always get to spend time together but when they did, neither were the type to just sit around and drink coffee.
She was just glad she had someone willing to do something she couldn't do with Leah. Nick was always game but he wasn't always available. Faith and Emma more or less had a synced up schedule, but Emma had Leah so they couldn't always meet. But she was absolutely glad whenever they did get to because apart from Nick and Leah, Faith was her favourite person.
Entering the premise, Emma was immediately called out to and she squealed when she saw Faith standing not too far away from the entrance. "Faith!" She squeezed the slimmer woman tight and laughed at Faith's comment. "Don't call him that, you weirdo. And Leah's amazing. I think she misses her Faithy." Emma pouted slightly before grinning. "Just like her mama." She reached out to hug Faith one more time.
"Alrightie let's go." She gestured for Faith to follow her to the wall. Emma greeted the trainers and warmed up a little before strapping herself on to the equipment.
"So how's shrinking going? Any crazies confess their love to you yet?" She asked with a chuckle, grabbing on to a foothold to begin her ascent.

I think I'll pass on the summer.
Faith snickered and shrugged, "You can't honestly blame me. I mean you're not blood, you can think he's a fine piece, too." She winked at her best friend and waggled her eyebrows. It wasn't out of the norm for her to cross lines. She'd known Nick almost as long as she'd known Emma, so it wasn't as though she wasn't familiar with the dynamic in their family. Nick was Emma's brother and nephew all wrapped in one which was a big no-no when it came to finding him attractive. But that didn't mean Faith couldn't mention it.
"Ugh! I miss her! And you. Like hell." She brushed back a strand of Emma's hair and hugged her back. Not long after they parted, she was following behind Emma to get prepped for the wall. She chalked her hands and started up beside Emma.
The question made her snort and she also gave a sort of shrug, "Obviously. There are so many men with mommy issues that they just can't help themselves." It wasn't even a conceded answer, she was being dead serious. Faith was aware of her looks and aware of the positively tempting aura she put out, but even if it weren't for those two things she was sure they'd love her. She was the only one who knew them, who listened to them and gave them the attention they so craved. She couldn't even judge them though because the whole reason she had gotten into psychology was because she was a fucked up kid inside, too.
Her smirk returned and she passed up Emma by one stretch, "How about you? Any potential daddies or mommies in Leah's near future?"
Ain't gonna fall for it this time.

Emma blanched at Faith's remark. "Gross. He's my brother. Family don't end in blood. And that means gross he is not a fine piece. And you stop with your salacious remarks about my brother. He has a girlfriend now. Well, she might as well be his girlfriend, the way they look at each other sometimes." Emma chuckled, sighing happily. She was probably more excited about the idea of Halley and Nick getting together than Nick and Halley were.
"We do need to set up a family dinner so she can see you. And you know you're more than welcome to stay at our place whenever. And I say that because I am not lugging around Leah's shit to your walk up. And she has a lot of shit she would want to show you." Emma chuckled.
Laughing at Faith's commentary on her patients, Emma shook her head. She wasn't about to judge them either because she had her fair share of neuroses. Ones even Faith was never ever going to dig up.
Rolling her eyes at her best friend's question, Emma shook her head, even though Elliot immediately came to mind. He hadn't even shown any interest towards her whatsoever so she really shouldn't be thinking about the man right then. "I'm way too busy with the studio and Randall is riding me way too hard for me to even think of dating." She shuddered as she climbed further up the wall, trying to catch up with Faith.
"Also, Wallace finally let me sell the house." Emma sighed. Faith knew how much her house meant to her but because there were way too many bad memories with her ex, she had decided to sell it. "I don't know why he even wanted to keep it in the first place. He's not even in Montana for fuck's sake."

I think I'll pass on the summer.
The reaction was exactly why Faith had done what she had. It was always amusing to see how disturbed she could make Emma by talking about her brother. She found herself smiling wider than she had meant to when Emma mentioned his new girlfriend. She could remember his ex vividly and although her suspicions had never been confirmed, she was certain that Nick had gotten out of something much more toxic than it appeared. For Emma to sound and look so happy about the new one, Faith was certain she'd like the girl.
"I'm sure she's wonderful. Nicky needs a good girl. And I miss family dinners. I bet Jamie is hitting that growth spurt that Nick did, huh?" It had been a while since she'd seen the full Adams clan and she regretted it. Her family, despite how deeply she cared for them, was a mess. And though she knew the chaotic family tree that Emma had, she'd always been jealous of the love she'd been surrounded by. Her parents, her brother and his wife, they were the most functional relationships she'd ever seen. "Oh it can't be that bad! But yes, it probably is easier for a single woman to travel than a woman and her baby girl. So I'll come stay, I promise."
Faith's face puckered a bit at the response her friend gave. For her not to have a single person in the picture was a shock. And something she was not going to buy. "Are you sure you're not just being oblivious to prince or princess charming? You do tend to get wrapped in your own little world, babe." She knew in large part that was due to being a mother, but there came a point where she'd have to date again. Her ex was...something that Faith preferred not to discuss and she wanted to live vicariously through Emma. Having a stable relationship with a nice guy that loved her. It seemed much likelier for the woman beside her than it was for her.
Her nostrils flared a bit at the mention of her ex's name and she kept climbing to maintain as much calm as she could. That man could awake something fierce in Faith. A white hot rage that threatened to come out every time she thought of him. "He can rightly go fuck himself. He only kept you from selling it because it was an inconvenience for you. And he's an ass. I hope that bastard stays wherever he went. Leah has plenty of fine men to influence her."
Ain't gonna fall for it this time.

Emma looked over to Faith and her jaw slacked exaggeratedly. "She is so damn cute. She's like Nick only sweeter. Them together is like...diabetes." She shook her head and grabbed on to the next hold. At the mention of Jamie, Emma groaned.
"The kid is like...almost at my chest. How did he even grow? He weighed less than a sack of potatoes yesterday." She chuckled and shook her head.
Emma gave out a harsh bark of laughter when Faith didn't believe the amount of crap Leah usually brought around, or rather, made Emma bring around. She gripped one hold tightly to swing close to Faith to ruffle her hair. "Yes please, love. I could use an extra body in bed that actually reached my legs." She grinned.
Groaning once more when Faith pressed for info about her love life, Emma turned to her best friend and raised an eyebrow. "Buddy, I can't live the life you want to vicariously live through. It's exhausting." She stuck her tongue out at Faith and rolled her eyes. "Besides, do you know how much the mothers, even the single ones, at Leah's school hate me? And my yoga students are way too young for me. And! Everyone at the office is too busy kissing Randall's ass to bother with me." She shrugged, not entirely hating her single life right now.
Scrambling to match Faith's distance, Emma knew exactly why the pixie haired Brit was suddenly so enthusiastic. She could remember the screaming matches Faith and Wallace had been in on Emma's behalf. Faith hated Wallace a lot more than Emma did.
"He still has visitation rights. I wanna hate him completely but he still knows how to love Leah the way she should be loved." She sighed. "I don't want her to grow up hating someone who clearly cares for her."
Emma wished her circumstances were different. But Wallace gave her the best miracle that was Leah. She wanted to hate him but she simply couldn't. "Speaking of fine men, I hear Ethan's coming back next week." Emma mentioned Nick's childhood friend, Ethan West. She used to have the biggest crush on the older guy back when she was still a kid. He was four years older than her and Faith, just like Nick was. And boy has he aged gracefully.
Although she wasn't entirely certain whether or not Faith actually remembered Ethan, It was highly unlikely that she did since Ethan didn't normally hang out with them when they were younger. Nick was good at keeping Elliot and Ethan separate from them.

I think I'll pass on the summer.
Faith loved Nick in all of his adorableness, but sickeningly sweet people always made her a bit uncomfortable. She was made up of snark and attitude so often her personality didn't mesh well with anything else. But anything was better than Nick's ex and she figured if Emma liked her then she most likely would too.
Her expression fell a bit when it was confirmed that she was missing out on watching the youngest Adams grow up. She'd been at the hospital when he was born, learned how to interact with small children because of him. He was the closest thing to a nephew that she was sure she'd ever get despite how many siblings she had. "That hurts to think about. I can't believe he's in the double digits already."
When Emma swung to ruffle her hair, Faith scrunched her nose and rolled her eyes, "What can I say, I'm pretty good at the snuggling thing. Even if it is just with you and Leah." She laughed and shrugged as she continued up the wall. Anything outside of those two she found herself in and out of quickly. She wasn't the type that slept over or allowed sleepovers. It was too much commitment and she was still working through those issues. Funny that a therapist could still be working through the very things she was trying to help her clients work through.
Faith could understand the fun that the single life brought and the lack of drama. She had been single for quite some time after being left to stand like an idiot in front of everyone she knew. But Emma was a catch and she knew that she could find someone that was at least a little bit worthy of her. Looking at Nick made her believe that as few and far between as they were, there had to be some genuinely good guys out there for them. Neither seemed to attract those types, but then, neither had the other Adams at first. "What about Nick's friends? I'm sure he's got plenty of hot cop friends that would show a fair bit of interest in you. If they haven't already!"
Her defense against her ex did nothing to ease the pent up rage that Faith held towards him. Her reasoning wasn't even sound. "Yeah well he started out knowing how to love you just fine, too. And look at how that ended up," It was harsh, of course, but that was all Faith knew. There had been a time when Leah's father was exactly what Emma wanted and loved. He seemed to put on a good show at the beginning, but Leah was only a few years old, what happened when she became too much for him to deal with? What happened when she became too much like Emma or Faith and he couldn't stand her anymore? She shrugged, "I'm just saying, she doesn't need him anymore than you ever did. She's got enough family without him to drag her down."
The heaviness that always came from talking about Emma's ex made Faith uncomfortable, even if she knew it was in large part because she never got the chance to beat the hell out of him. She loved Leah to pieces, but it mainly came from the fact that her mother was Faith's best friend and there was so much to love about that. It often outweighed her other half of genetics. Emma pulled her thoughts back to the present conversation with mentioning a fine man and a familiar name. She couldn't quite put a face to him, all of Nick's friends seemed to look the same except for maybe the musician one, but Faith couldn't even put a name to that one. "Can't put a face to him. They all look like giant meatheads to me, no offense to Nicky," She laughed.
Ain't gonna fall for it this time.

"Neither can I. And his best friend Nora is catching his eye by the day and I'm not entirely certain if that's a good thing or not. I mean it's cute! But like...they grew up together like me and Nick and that's disturbing to think about." She chuckled.
Emma smirked at Faith's response and she turned to face the woman. "If I recall correctly, you were a lot better at more than cuddling too." She wriggled her eyebrows at Faith, reminding her of the time when they fooled around in high school and a bit going into college as well.
Being set up with Nick's cop friends would probably feel just as weird as dating Nick. They were all so similar to each other, it was disturbing. She shook her head and dismissed the idea. "Hell no. I will not date those oversized buffoons and besides, I worry about Nick in that profession so why would I want to entertain another?"
Emma felt anger towards Faith for reminding her of Wallace's treatment of her but she knew Faith was right. Wallace had been the one for her in the beginning. He had been everything she had hoped for in a man. But Faith was right in that Leah had many other better influences in her life than her own father. Hell, Nick had been more of a father to Leah than Wallace will ever be. In the end, however, Leah still loved her dad. Could Emma really pull her away from him?
She kept quiet about it and was relieved to have something else to talk about, even if their conversation right then would disappoint Alison Bechdel.
"Offend Nicky. Go right ahead." Emma laughed and found that they had run out of wall. Going down wasn't as tedious as going up so she waited for Faith before looking down. "Maybe one of these days we go to an actual mountain to climb." She raised a teasing eyebrow to Faith. "Wanna go to the gym?"

Faith's nose scrunched, "Oh no, that's terrifying! He's not allowed to notice pretty girls yet!" She shook her head and laughed again, "While that is entirely true, I figured it wasn't appropriate talk in public, lovey. And besides, none of that while Leah is in the house. You need to be on good behavior."
Faith laughed at her clear disgust of the police jocks that Nick was surrounded by. "Okay, okay, fine. What about that other one? The musician? His wife still around? I'm sure you could take her," She wiggled her eyebrows back at her best friend. "Although, I suppose that would possible turn into a problem for Jamie wouldn't it?" What was his name? She couldn't for the life of her remember, but she knew he'd been cute. And around a lot more often than she'd seen Ethan.
A mountain seemed like a reasonable idea. And something that sparked her adrenaline junky. "Yes! Please. I need a little excitement that comes from more than just a wall." But then Emma mentioned the gym and as they touched the ground, Faith tapped her finger to her lower lip. "Gym or donuts? I mean it's still early right? And I think I earned a donut. There's no way it'll reach my ass by tomorrow."
Ain't gonna fall for it this time.

She couldn't have agreed with Faith more on the subject of her nephew. She was so used to him being teeny that she couldn't entertain the idea of him having big boy feelings for someone. Even if that someone was Nora. Briefly, she couldn't help but think especially if that someone was Nora.
Emma laughed and shrugged at Faith's chastising. "Oh please, when have I ever been appropriate? Hell, when have you ever been appropriate?" She rolled her eyes and froze a little when Faith mentioned Elliot. Emma still couldn't be sure whether Elliot was single or not. There hadn't really been any indication that he was. She could argue that there hadn't been any indication that he wasn't either. But that was precisely the problem. Emma was not the type to break any relationships, she had a lot more dignity than the ladies at Leah's school gave her credit for.
She breathed a sigh of relief when Faith mentioned Jamie and she chuckled, a little forcefully. "Yeah, it would." She dismissed it, hoping Faith would too.
"We'll schedule something." Emma nodded, glad they had a plan. They just needed to push each other to do something.
At the mention of donuts, Emma groaned. "I could do with a bear claw." She said unstrapping herself from the harness and slung her arm around Faith's shoulder, pulling her in. "You my friend are a genius. I've always said that and today you've proven it." She poked Faith in her belly. "Let's go."
