it only takes a spark
to tear the world apart
Patch liked waking up early. He thrived in the darkness of the morning and he was at his best before the sun came up. He didn't used to be like this. Before his abilities kicked in, he was surly and downright mean to anybody who spoke to him before seven in the morning. He wasn't a morning person perse. He could still be quite mean but it was a choice now.
It helped being the early riser in the house, what with Layla having to go to work and usually not having time to get Nicky ready for school, Patch liked to mess about in the kitchen to prepare their favourite foods before they had to wake up. It gave both Nicky and Layla time to sleep in.
Once he had gone to wake Layla up, using his shadows to corporeally materialise in her room and nudge her off the bed, Patch woke Nicky up by bringing a plate of waffles into his room so the kid could wake up to a very nice smell. "Up and at 'em, kid. Time to go to school."
Nicky followed the plate out of the bedroom and into the bathroom and Patch promised to leave him a big stack. He waited for Layla's response before packing up their lunches for them. It was ridiculously domestic and it had been this way for years. Nicky was almost a teenager and it felt strange to hear him call him Dad and yet somehow, it didn't. He and Layla weren't even in that kind of relationship and it already felt like they were a proper family unit.
He sat at the kitchen table and was about to start on his breakfast when Nicky bounded in, demanding his waffles.

All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
Waking up early was something Layla had never done willingly. Not when Nicholas was younger, not before he was born and not now. She'd lucked out by having a child that slept well and hard. Sometimes it was like trying to wake up a rock. She never complained when it came to waking him though. Especially because she knew that a little food went a long way. When someone woke her, it usually took a few tries. Her parents had hated it. They would huff and groan and slam her door shut which only ever made her linger in her bed longer.
Living with her best friend was Heaven. He got up early, cooked breakfast, got her son situated and helped her out with getting ready for her own job. There were very few downfalls to her relationship with Patch. Of course she was on good behavior, eating as much as he put on her plate and three times a day. Over all, her life had improved significantly the closer they got. Unfortunately with that came feelings and struggles. Nicholas was always making comments and trying to push them together. While Layla wouldn't have minded it, she was not keen on pushing Patch any further than she already had. For crying out loud her kid was calling him Dad.
He had nudged her, or rather his shadow had nudged her right off the bed. She landed with a huff and groaned against the rug, "God dammit Patrick!" However, she didn't make any move to get up and she was fully content with going back to sleep curled up on the floor. She heard Nicholas trudging down the hall way and peeking into her room before laughing and walking away. She knew that he was drawn by the smell coming from the kitchen, but that couldn't move her.
As Nick entered the kitchen, he flopped down on the chair beside his dad and smacked the table, "Let's do this!" He grabbed his fork and began shoveling waffles onto his plate and into his mouth. Between mouthfuls, he looked up at Patch, "Mom's gonna be late. She didn't even move after hitting the floor."

He watched as Nicky transformed into Kirby and chuckled at his attempt at talking in between hoovering his food. Checking his watch, Patch shrugged and continued eating his food. "We'll let her have a bit more time." He responded. "All else fails, the shadows can bring her to the bathroom."
They still had about half an hour before Layla would be very late anyway. He liked spending time with his best friend's kid. He'd loved him the moment he found out Layla was pregnant. It didn't matter that Nicky had a scumbag for a father, Patch had seen him as his own for a long while. Even when Layla married Isaac, he still called Nicky his own.
Especially now that Nicky was almost a teenager, making things permanent with him was always at the forefront of Patch's mind. It seemed like the most logical step. Patch had a steady job and his bookstore was still pulling in customers. They were already a family unit, despite their circumstances.
Patch kept up a mindless conversation with Nicky about whatever was on their minds, which somehow circulated around Emma, baseball, Pixar, the weather and PacMan. And before they knew it, the food was almost gone and the time to really wake Layla up was upon them.
"Lay, if you don't wake up, I'm making the shadow pour cold water on you!" Patch yelled out.

All You Have Is Your Fire

Patch's threat made Nicholas pause in his shoveling. He glanced at the room his mother was laying in before he turned to his dad, "Uh, are you sure you wanna do that? She's kind of scary as it is in the morning." Always had been and likely always would be. Nicholas knew better than to wake her up forcefully. He took the gentle approach when they'd lived on their own. That or he just let her be and tried to find a way to call off for her. Gerty never minded much.
Layla heard her best friend's threat and she continued lying there, unmoving, daring him.
Now, Layla loved Patch with everything she possessed, but she wasn't afraid of beating him senseless if the opportunity presented itself. She knew she had to get up, she knew that it was getting to the point that she wouldn't have any time to shower or eat. And yet, she made no move to get up. All she wanted was to sleep for a whole day, even if it was on her bedroom floor. And if she was going to be woken up, the least he could have done was do it gently.
Layla rolled over onto her back and stared up at the ceiling, perhaps playing a little too much attention on the shadows that no doubt were surrounding her. Ready to pounce at his beck and call. "Do it, see what happens," She muttered as she let her eyes drift closed again.

Looking at Nicky with a raised eyebrow, Patch leaned forward and whispered conspiratorially. "You've known me for twelve years, do you really think I don't mean what I say?" He ruffled Nick's hair and listened to any response from the room. And when he didn't get one, Patch rolled his eyes and moved his shadow.
The most prominent one absorbed the others and became tangible enough to grip the back of Layla's neck to pull her up. It wasn't rough, but it wasn't exactly gentle either. It did it's job.
"Last chance, Lay." Patch called out.

All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
Layla felt something on her neck and she opened her eyes slowly. Her nostrils flared and her hands gripped the rug tightly, "Patrick James Adams, if you don't let me go, I'm going to end life as you know it!" While she knew he wouldn't hurt her, it did always give her a tiny bit of anxiety being handled by shadows. They were familiar like Patch, had a twinge about them that made it feel like him, but they were dark and consuming and she'd had plenty of darkness overcome her life.
Nick cringed at the familiarity of the middle name coming out. She meant business and Patch was about to feel her early morning wrath. "I'm not saying you don't mean it, I'm just saying for your sake, I hope she takes it easy on you," He found himself smirking. Nicholas was quite aware of how evil his mother could be when she felt like it and this was one of those instances.
Layla heard his final chance nonsense and she took a deep breath, stubbornly set on not moving a single muscle willingly. "It's your deathbed, babe!"

Patrick rolled his eyes at the use of his middle name. Unlike Nick, he very much didn't buy into Layla's threats. He knew her too well to let it get to him. Sure, she'd hate him and slam things around purposefully whenever he was near but in the end, she'd calm down and he would be one of her favourite people in the world again.
They didn't weather fifteen years of friendship to let morning wake ups get between them.
"Jesus Christ, Layla. You're already awake, you might as well get into the shower. I won't hesitate to strip you and douse you with water. You know I'm not above that." He yelled back as he started to wash his dishes. "You done over there, Nick?" He asked over his shoulder, like he wasn't at war with Nick's mother.

All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
The stubbornness between the two adults in the house showed Nick that even if he hadn't gotten it from his mother, he easily could have picked it up from her best friend. He'd acquired lots of traits from Patch, though he was still waiting on one that would help him win over his mother. Sure, she couldn't stay mad at her own son, but she could punish him and he wasn't keen on that. Patch could probably get away with murder.
He spoke of stripping Layla down and while Nick's face scrunched up, he took a little bit of elation from it. Every hour, every minute, he knew that they were getting closer. He'd only been working on it since he was seven or so, but he was starting to understand relationships a little bit better now. "Dude, I just ate, can you not talk about stripping my mother please." He smirked at Patch before getting up and bringing the plates over to his dad. "You really think she's going to budge?"
Layla laid there and shook her head back and forth repetitively. Nope, she was not giving in. Not to him. Not ever. Patch took advantage of the fact that she loved him too much to stay mad and the only way she could handle it was by being stubborn and allowing herself to get mad at all. She raised her hands in the air, "I'm waiting. Hit me with your best shot Patchykinz."

Knowing that Nick picked up on a lot of their traits did disturb Patch a little but not to the extent that he would ever stop being who he was. It wasn't like he had any personality traits that was detrimental to Nick's overall well being. His depression no longer reared its ugly head at the most inopportune moments and his shadows didn't consume him as much as it did before. He was just the easygoing hippie his parents had raised him to be. Sure, Layla wouldn't like it if Nick became a stoner but really, who died from smoking a little weed?
"Buddy, you came out of her. It's time you learn how to manage your grossness at naked women." Patch chuckled, knowing just how to push both Layla and Nick's buttons. They were honestly just way too easy to tease.
"Of course she's not going to budge. This is your mother we're talking about." He snorted before laughing out loud at her response. "You are so on." He said under his breath as he ordered his shadow to tug at her pants. It was a little skeazy but hey, she was the one who challenged him. She knew what she was getting into.

All You Have Is Your Fire

"Ew no, that's my mother!" Nicholas had no intention of ever being comfortable about naked women or rather, naked people in general. He wasn't even comfortable with himself naked. It was even more disturbing that they were talking about Layla. He shook his head and grabbed his book bag from the corner where he'd left it. Heaving it over his shoulder, he cleared his throat. "Alright I gotta catch the bus. I don't want to be caught in the collateral damage." Nick smiled at his dad, "Good luck. Bye Mom, love you!" And with that he gave Patch a nod before scrambling out of the house quickly.
Layla shook her head back and forth. It was exactly what she'd expected from him. She took a deep breath to calm her agitation, "Bye Nicky, love you! Smack your dad for me!" Layla smirked and tugged her pants back up past her belly button. When she heard the door close behind her son, she knew she could let profanities fly. No more good behavior, this was war.
"Patch, you ass! Stop cheating! You want me up, you can come get me your damn self!" The woman couldn't help herself. She liked challenging men, especially men like Patch that she knew wouldn't just stand by and let her win everything. "Pussy!"

Patch simply laughed at Nick's response. Even more so when he started to leave. "Oh come on." He started but he was still laughing when Nicky left the house. He rolled his eyes when he heard Layla issuing another challenge. Calling him a pussy made him laugh. "You mean durable and tough? Thanks babe." He responded before summoning his shadow back.
It enveloped him like a warm hug and he breathed out a sigh of relief. Not having it around for too long made him a little cold, curiously enough.
He walked towards Layla's room and opened the door. "You're in for it now, ya lazy ass." Patch shook his head and walked over to where Layla was. He bent down a little and easily scooped her up and tossed her on the bed before tickling her mercilessly. "You wanna rethink calling me a cheater?"

All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
When the shadow slithered away from her, she was certain she'd won. Just as she was reaching up to pull the covers from the bed over top of her, she heard his footsteps and she groaned, "Unless you're coming to cuddle with me, go away!" She called out before he could open the door. She wished she had a physical ability like telekinesis that could keep the door from budging. The door opened and she chucked a pillow at him and did her best to try and crawl away from him before he could pick her up.
It obviously didn't work because he scooped her up and tossed her on the bed. "Oof, no. No! Patrick, don't you do it!" And yet he did, mercilessly and consistently. Layla giggled and screeched and squealed, trying her hardest to push his hands away. "Not....fair....Patch....stop," She struggled to get words out as she laughed and snorted and squirmed beneath his fingers against her sides and everywhere else she was ticklish.
Layla wrapped her legs around him and rolled over, finally pinning him down, her hands on his shoulders and her knees on his forearms, "Gotcha! I told you not to mess with me, but nope, you just had to tickle me. But I've got you!"

Layla's move completely caught him off guard, which was why it was so easy for Layla to actually pin him down. And if he were being honest, he didn't actually mind being under her like this.
"Hmm...I guess." He raised an eyebrow and smirked. He wriggled his arms out from under her knees and let his hands move to her waist so she can't move. "I mean it's not like I did anything to make it that difficult."
He let his hand move up her sides before pushing her hair out of her face with one hand, tucking it behind her ear. Cupping her face with the other hand, his smirk softened. "So work's out of the question, huh."

All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
With Patch's hands on her waist, she felt her heart leap into her chest the way it always did when she was with him. Any little touch made her go damn near insane, but she tried to hide it well. Those weren't the kinds of feelings she liked to let escape with her best friend, even if she had the smallest idea that he felt it too.
Layla's eyes slid shut when he brushed her hair away from her face, there was no hope for her to move if he kept doing that! His other hand cupped her face and she leaned against it, "There's not a chance in hell I'm going to work today." She opened her eyes and smirked down at him, "I mentioned cuddling earlier, and I mean, you're already in here with me." All she had to do was curl up next to him and she would not be moving for the rest of the day.
Nicky would be hard at work for the both of them and she'd make up for it later. But the longer she thought about it, the more she just wanted to stay home with him. Layla slid her legs down so that she was no longer straddling him and instead settled for laying on him, her arms pulling in close to her chest, "Now you don't get a choice. Good night."

Patch smiled when Layla leaned into his touch. It was scary how easy all this was. Even before, when he didn't have these feelings for Layla, it had always been easy to fall into certain patterns with them. They were both ridiculously affectionate with each other and while he didn't know, or rather didn't want to hope, how Layla felt about him, being connected with her made so much sense.
For someone who viewed relationships outside of friendship and family as being completely expendable, he could easily see a future of that capacity with Layla. They already had the makings of a family and Nicky was already his son, being with Layla should be the next logical step.
Turning to his side as Layla splayed over him, he let Layla lie on his arm while the other was held securely around her waist. "Hey hey hey, we are not sleeping." Patch clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth before wriggling away a little, sliding his hand under her shirt to feel her warm skin.
