It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
After walking out on Haden's rehearsal, with the image of the blonde smirking as her arms wrapped around Haden like the tentacles of a sea witch, Ella practically ran to her hotel room and pretty much dramatically threw herself on to the bed and cried for a good ten minutes.
She shouldn't be angry with Blase, in fact, she should be happy that someone saw in Haden what Ella saw everyday. She should especially be happy for Haden for finding someone he connected with far away from home.
But she wasn't. She was miserable. And the one person she wished to talk to about it was also the reason why she was it in the first place. She decided she had to call someone just to get things off her chest so as she sobbed, she dialled her other best friend's number, not even caring about the bill she would be raking up when she went home.
Even before the woman on the other line could say anything, Ella launched into her spiel. "Len, I went to Haden. I went to Haden and he has a girlfriend. His girlfriend is French, Len. And she's blonde and thin and beautiful and she's evil. She just straight up Tentacrueled herself around Haden the moment she saw me and marked her territory and I came to tell him that I love him and now I can't even do that."
She didn't know how much Lennox actually even heard because Ella was still bawling her eyes out.

Defying Gravity
I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game
To be honest, Lennox had been sitting in her room writing for days, barely making time to shower or eat. Occasionally she would go to the bathroom or open the curtains for sunlight. She had been completely engulfed in what was sitting in front of her that she hadn't had much time to interact with friends. She knew that Ella was gone which was her only friend that mattered anyway, but she hadn't really paid enough attention to where she was going or what she was doing wherever she was. All she could assume was that it had to do with Haden and Lennox did her best to stay out of the mess that followed that kid. She wasn't too keen on him.
Less so when she felt her phone buzzing beside her and answered to a sobbing mess of her best friend. Definitely about Haden.
Lennox didn't speak, she absorbed all of the information that Ella gave her, digested it and tried to go about things calmly as to not say that Haden was a sack of disgusting, male hormones that couldn't be tamed or channeled into one person. It was awful the way he strung Ella along and Lennox had a hard time letting it go.
Once she was sure that Ella had finished speaking, or attempting to speak anyway, Lennox took a deep breath and pulled her knees to her chest after pushing her notebook away. "Alright, gorgeous girl, straighten up, take a deep breath and listen. This French twat has nothing on you. Not a single thing. You've known Haden for longer than anyone else could probably handle him. He's your best friend and she's just one of his flings. You know how he is. Nothing is ever serious with him. Other than you. You're the only relationship he's ever maintained." It was all nice, what she was saying. Despite the fact that she wanted to tear into Haden and rip him to shreds. She could respect the feelings her best friend had for him.

It's not unusual

Grateful that Lennox caught everything she said, Ella continued to sob into her pillow. She tried to calm down, or at least sob less loud but as Lennox tried to be reasonable, with a dash of Lennox spice, Ella couldn't help bawling even more.
She loved her best friend, she really did, but everything Lennox said about Haden was laced with double meaning. Just because they did it behind her back, Ella knew Haden and Lennox didn't see eye to eye with each other except when it comes to Ella.
"But she's not a twat." Ella said softly through hiccups. "She looks like an angel." She admitted. "She probably dances like one too. To be a principal dancer at the last minute..." she sniffled and turned on to her back and closed her eyes, calming her hiccups.
"Len...I'm useless, aren't I?" She laughed through her tears. "I didn't even ask how you were." She gulped and took in a deep breath, as deep as her clogged nose could let her. "Are you writing?"

Defying Gravity
I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game
The way Ella defended this French girl made Lennox more mad than the idea that Haden had left Ella behind to dance with someone else. That wasn't how things were meant to go. Ella was his dance partner and he was basically cheating on her. "Hold on, hold on. Wait a second. Did you just defend the blonde bombshell that was dropped on you? Never mind the fact that she's only a principal because you turned it down. Odds are, they don't even move well together. You and Haden have the perfect height for each other." And that was all just fact based on dancing and her experience with watching the two of them together. She didn't need to know this French girl. Nor did she ever plan to know her. All she knew was that Haden was a dumb sack of crap that Lennox had no patience for.
Lennox was fired up, her cheeks were easily beet red, not that it took much with her complexion. Even so, she knew that she would be letting Haden have it when he came back. She'd march straight up to him and punch him if she could. Or she'd just make him feel guilty because he had every reason to feel that way.
She took another deep breath and put her phone between her ear and her shoulder so that she could rummage around for some music that would calm her. Once she found it, she set it to a murmur in the background and sighed, "Ella, stop. You're not useless and you didn't call me to ask how I am. Racking up the big bucks to make a phone call, it clearly needs to have a purpose and it does. We can talk about me when you come home." Lennox chewed on her bottom lip and rested her head against the wall, "Have you talked to him about it? Told him that he should've mentioned her before? Haden never aims to hurt you, he's just really fucking good at it."

It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
Closing her eyes when Lennox predictably chewed her out for trying to see the good in people. It was Ella's default setting. If she can't be happy for herself, she was going to be happy for someone else. Lennox telling her that she and Haden were a perfect height for each other made her laugh a little. "You're right. She's not as tall as I am." She released her held breath and pushed the heel of her palm against her brow bone.
When Lennox refused to talk about herself, Ella felt a little embarrassed. She was every cliche heartbroken girl trope right then and Lennox was being very supportive of that. But then she turned the blame on Haden and Ella groaned.
"Lennox, please..." she pleaded softly. "I need you to put that aside for just right now. Please? I know...I know you don't like him but I do. He's been a constant in my life. As have you. I can't have you two hating each other. You're all I've got, Len."
She didn't mean to guilt trip her best friend but it at least helped in slowing Lennox down on the Haden hate. She still didn't quite understand the animosity they had for each other. But it did give her pause when she realised that Haden didn't mention Blase before. Even when Ella asked, he said there weren't any worthy of mention. Why was that?
"I...didn't have time. They had rehearsals. That's why I left." Ella sniffled.

Defying Gravity
I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game
Lennox pumped the brakes on her rant over Haden, but it didn't ease any of the frustrations she held for him. Especially as Ella pleaded for him. The effort seemed so one-sided from Lennox's point of view that her opinions often ran amuck when it came to him. Then to find that he had once again gone off with another girl and leaving his best friend in the dust, it hardly seemed fair for him to have such a good person protecting him. "I can't help it that he's an ass," She shrugged her shoulder, although she knew Ella couldn't see. "Sounds like him and this blonde twit deserve each other," She muttered under her breath in frustration.
"Okay, so they had rehearsals. You need to walk straight up to him next chance you get and confront the situation. Otherwise this slag is going to shove you out of his life and stake her claim. I wouldn't put him past letting that happen, Ella. I know, I know, you love him and he's your best friend, but he's weak when it comes to women. I swear he doesn't know how to tell them to piss off when he should." The music playing behind her was fighting the irritation she was getting from the conversation. There was no calming affect, she just felt heat in her cheeks from being so annoyed by the boy that her friend was so adamant on caring about.
She leaned her head back against the wall, "Why is he so worth it to you, Ella? Are you sure that he even deserves your friendship?"

It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
Even though Ella heard what Lennox said, she kept quiet as tears streamed down her face. It didn't help her being upset when she knew her best friend was upset as well and that she was sort of inadvertently the cause of it.
Having a solution did help. She knew she should confront Haden. She wanted to know why Haden never spoke about Blase before this. She had asked point blank and he had refused to tell her. It only made her think that maybe this Blase girl was just self-inserting herself into Haden's life and Haden was just too nice to push back.
When Lennox asked her for the reason she was in love with Haden, Ella sighed. "He understands me, Len. When we dance, even without practice, he knows what I'm going to do and he'll complement the move. We know each other's past and...we love each other because of it." She wiped her eyes and released a breath she didn't know she was holding. "I just love him, Lennox."

I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game
She just loved him. And that was the infuriatingly confusing part of it all. Lennox had never known love, not in her whole life besides what she'd seen from her parents prior to them living separate lives. Of course they still loved each other, but it wasn't blatantly in her face every day. Having a crush hadn't even occurred to her before, zero guys or girls being on her radar, she wasn't even sure she had a radar to begin with. All she knew was that it didn't seem worth it to love someone when nothing was reciprocated.
"Well, I don't get it, but I don't have any guys on my radar so I suppose I wouldn't anyway. Maybe some day I'll understand what you mean, until then, I just can't help but want more for you than him," That was a harsh truth, one that she was never really good at hiding. It just made so much more sense for her to love someone who loved her back with every ounce she put in. And Haden fell short frequently in Lennox's eyes.
She pursed her lips and sighed, "You know I just care too much about you. You're the only sister I've ever had, Ella. And hearing you upset, seeing you upset, just knowing about it makes me go on a warpath. He's just the easiest target." Because he was typically the reason behind it. "One of these days he'll figure out that you're the best girl in his life and he'll whisk you away. Until then, make that French twit's life Hell."

It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
Lennox's words of...encouragement left Ella sighing over the phone. She knew Lennox was only trying to look out for her but she also didn't know Haden like Ella did. That was literally the only reason Ella could think of for Lennox's hatred towards Haden.
She laughed when Lennox asked her to give Haden's girlfriend Hell. Ella wouldn't do that, Lennox knew that. But the idea made her laugh and she was grateful that Lennox was the type of person to say things like that.
"I love you, Len. I'm sorry I'm crying over the phone. I just...don't have anyone else to call." She wiped her eyes and nose with a piece of tissue and breathed out. "I gotta get ready for the show tonight. I love you Len. I'll call you later, mkay?"
