It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
Ella didn't end up staying as long as she had expected. She couldn't stand looking at how Blase had her hands all over Haden. She couldn't stand how perfectly he moved with her. She left just before Haden took a fall and she went back home and suddenly four months had passed and she hadn't heard from Haden. It was the longest they had spent apart with no communication.
It was obvious how listless she had been the past few months. Even her students could feel the energy dissipate. They kept asking her when Haden was coming back and it took so much out of her not to just bawl her eyes out right then and there.
She could hardly even stand being home anymore so she spent most of her days just out. She tried to drown herself in activities and then at the end of the day, she'd hit the bars. She had become a cliche and she didn't even have the energy to fight it.
"Keep it coming, Ryan. I don't wanna feel my face when you close my tab." The Aussie slurred as she tossed back a shot.

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
Whether it was the fall that broke his leg or the fact that Ella hadn't said a word to him since before the show, things with Blase had ended swiftly by the time the tour was over. She'd become suffocating, but it was the way she spoke about Ella that had driven him to the point of breaking it off. He was angry with Ella, no doubt, for not staying or giving him a chance to say anything about why he bothered with Blase. He hadn't even understood why she had any reason to be angry, what with the man she'd been with being her reason for not coming on tour. Was he supposed to just be available for her whenever she decided not to be with someone else?
He hadn't contacted her since his return home and he hadn't talked to Blase since he left her in France. Haden had gone back to having practically no one to go to for anything. And he hadn't danced since his leg injury. The doctor gave him 3-6 months before he'd be fully recovered and it was the longest he'd gone without dancing. As if not being on speaking terms with his best friend wasn't bad enough.
Haden had skipped the painkillers that day and resorted to taking the bus to a bar in town. If it had been up to him, he would have been drunk every day, but he lived with the painkillers instead. With the crutches propped under his arms, he swung himself into the bar and went to take a seat, but paused when he heard a familiar, sloppy voice. His nostrils flared and he considered trying to turn around, although he couldn't figure out how to do it swiftly or smoothly. Just as he managed to turn around, he heard someone, assuming that it was the bartender as if he needed a hand with anything. Haden stood there for a moment, debating on whether he wanted to answer or not, and settled for no as he started making his way back out the door.
Home for me is where you are.

She hadn't expected to see anyone she knew, least of all Haden. She'd specifically went out of her way to go to this bar so she wouldn't see anyone. But she supposed the fates were just being cruel to her for abandoning her friend because her feelings were hurt.
Justified though she was about her hurt feelings, she had been asking herself one question. Did she really expect Haden to wait around for her? She hadn't waited for him and had gone straight to Ben. It wasn't like Haden even had feelings for her.
When the bartender called out to someone who needed help, Ella turned to see who it was and froze on the barstool as she saw the one person she had been avoiding for months. Why was he in crutches?
She hurriedly threw a few dollar bills on the counter and slid off her stool, following Haden out the door. "Don't tell me you're leaving just because of me." Her tone was a mix of both sarcasm and disappointment.

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
Haden was aware that he couldn't retreat back to the bus stop quickly, but he was trying and to be honest he wasn't sure he'd stop at the bus. He'd gotten the hang of the crutches, he could swing his way through the town all the way back to his place. As long as it meant not having this conversation with her. It was not what he'd planned on doing when he went out. The fact that they'd ended up in the same place was bogus and unfair.
He could hear her stumbling behind him, but he didn't stop. Taking a deep breath he glanced around once outside and picked the direction that he was sure would lead him somewhere that wasn't there. There was nothing about the situation that made him want to deal with it. She was drunk and he was in pain and pissed off. None of that added up to a good situation.
"I'm not doing this with you, Gabriella. You're a piss poor drunk and I don't have the patience." Or the stomach for it. He was pissed, as hell, about her leaving without a word. But he was also sick to his stomach over being mad at her and having her equally as mad at him for something he didn't even understand. A crosswalk sign turned to don't walk which caused him to stop and he groaned, "For fuck's sake, really?"
Home for me is where you are.

"Oh suddenly it's Gabriella now?" She asked with an incredulous laugh. "And yeah, you really don't know the meaning of patience, do you." She shot back before standing in front of him.
"But tell me why exactly you don't have patience to do this with me?"
She was surprised she had this much clarity while being absolutely wasted. "Is it because you know that coming back without telling is a shitty thing to do? Or is it the fact that you didn't even want to mention hooking up with your partner to me after I specifically asked you?" She then pointed to his leg. "And this, what is this?"

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
While he was stuck there to wait, he remained silent. There really was no point in giving her the satisfaction of a response to her drunken attitude. Sure, he wasn't being much better, but at least he could think coherently about what he was upset about. She probably didn't even know. She was going purely on the fact that she was angry and the alcohol was just making it stronger. Meanwhile he was standing on crutches, waiting for a bus because he couldn't drive, trying to escape his best friend the same way she'd escaped him months ago.
His turned his head to look down the road, waiting for the bus to hurry the hell up. He stared, refusing to look at her because that's all it took. Haden couldn't afford to just let her get away with what she'd done after the tour. When she mentioned his leg, he turned his head sharply, "You'd fucking know what that was if you hadn't bailed before the show fucking ended, Ella!"
With a shake of his head, he laughed, "It's fucking hilarious how hypocritical you are, ya know? Fuck me for not telling you that I was back when you didn't exactly tell me you were leaving. And fuck me for not telling you about the girl that was supposed to be you. Or did you forget that, El? You chose some fuckwad over your dream and somehow all of this is my fault?" He let out a sharp huff and turned to start swinging himself down the road, giving up on the bus.

His response flared her up and in her drunken state, all she heard was him judging her for something she had little control over. Was she really to blame for wanting to stay and work on a relationship that she had thought was worth more than her dreams?
"How dare you talk to me like that, you angry piece of shit." She yelled back, following him and grabbing his arm to stop him. "Don't walk away from me, Haden. You stay and deal with me like an adult. You can't get away with talking to me like I'm some kind of rando who doesn't know anything about you."
She let his arm go as she swayed on the spot. "Goddammit!" She cussed, leaning against the wall as the world started to spin. "You...you fucking..." she slid on to the floor and closed her eyes. "Stop getting angry with me for something I thought was real. I wanted Ben and I to work because I thought we could be happy." She was losing steam pretty fast and now she just wanted to pass out. Or vomit.

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
She grabbed his arm and he rocked a little on his crutches to a halt. If he hadn't been injured, things would have played out far differently than this. It was like some sick joke, him being stuck in this situation with no escape from it. He let her yell at him, his expression remaining stoic because he was starting to realize how little it mattered.
She completely glanced over his words and it only solidified that he was right, it didn't matter. Ella was drunk and there was no rational conversation happening. Ironically she was the one telling him to handle it like an adult, but she was the one who'd gotten blitzed and started losing it on him. She started to sway and he might've reached out to steady her if he was not restrained by his crutches. It was a knee-jerk reaction usually, but in this case, he couldn't.
Her last statement made him snort and he shook his head, "I could have and I did tell you how unreal it was. You just didn't want to listen. How about instead of yelling at me for talking to you like you're some rando, you start realizing that in that situation that's all you treated me as. I knew he was a piece of shit the moment you brought him around, but it didn't matter. Fact of the matter is, Els, none of the girls that I waste my time with have ever been a long-term thing because I at least knew how temporary they were." He pulled his phone out and set up for an Uber to take her home because that was about all that he could offer her.
But as he thought about it, he realized that it was probably better for him to go with her anyway, just to make sure she made it safe. Even if he was angry.

It's not unusual
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
Ella knew how Haden got when he was confronted this way. But in her drunk state, she just wanted everything out in the open. If this was what he thought of her, then it was better that she knew now. She loved Haden, with all her heart, but she couldn't keep swallowing her pride just because he wasn't good at talking.
The past few months without him hit her like a dump truck. Not even Lennox could bring her out of her funk. All she wanted to do was go back to Haden to ask him to forgive her for bailing on him but she didn't think it was fair for her to distract him from his tour.
It was then that she realised that she was so hell bent on making it work with Ben because she thought that he was the best thing she could settle for. She fought against Haden's reasoning because he hadn't given her the one reason why Ben wasn't good for her. Right then, she realised it didn't matter anymore.
She was late to the party but Haden was lost to her too.
Ella rubbed her eyes and pushed herself up, using the wall as support as she took deep breaths to center herself. She needed to go home. She couldn't get through to Haden and being angry with him while she was drunk was not the best approach. Now that she knew he was back, she was going to have to swallow her pride once more and ask him to forgive her. But not right now.
She started walking in the direction of her apartment, knowing how hypocritical she really was being now. She was bailing on him yet again despite asking him to be an adult and talk to her. But hey, if he wasn't ready to talk, if this was their new normal now, she had to accept it.

Take Me Home
I'm only happy when I'm with you
When she stood up, he glanced at her and watched her try to regain what little composure she had. He considered at least offering some kind of support the way that his crutches were doing for him, but he stayed put and looked down at his feet. What good would it do? The tension was palpable and sickening.
It wasn't until she started walking away in the direction of her apartment that he realized that things were much more fucked than he had been willing to accept. They both knew each other more than anyone else. He knew she was upset, but she was the one who did the talking and coaxed out what he felt. When she bailed on the tour, she hadn't even given him a chance. She left before he could explain what Blase's role was in his life at that point. It wasn't out of the ordinary for him to have flings, he'd done it for years. It was the same way she had relationships. They handled things differently.
But Haden was sick of the familiarity of being left by people who were supposed to love him. He bit his tongue to keep from calling out after her to tell her exactly that because at this point it wouldn't make a difference. He waited until the car pulled up in front of him before he got in and asked to be taken to his apartment. Reluctantly, he sent a text message to one person he avoided like the plague, but he at least wanted someone to know when and if Ella made it home safely. Lennox was likely the only person who would make sure of it even if she hated him.
Home for me is where you are.
