All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
It seemed ironic that she'd been in this position before almost twenty years prior. There were countless differences, but the gist of it was all the same. It wasn't nearly as terrifying this go-round. The signs had been the same and so she knew almost immediately. Even with all the time that had passed between this time and the last, she could still recognize the changes to her body. Although this time was easier, better even, it was hard figuring out how to tell the person that she was with. So she waited to tell him second and instead told her person, the greatest love that she'd ever had, first.
Nicholas had moved out just a few short years ago, he was thriving and reminded her so much of her best friend that she knew he was the right person to go to first. It only seemed fair because while Patch had been in her life longer, Nicholas was her life. He'd seen her through her worst and loved her unconditionally. Besides, she couldn't stop herself from being excited about telling him that he was going to be an older brother. It was no question that they'd be inseparable. Nicky had looked at her best friend as his father his whole life, there would be no envy that by blood, the next little nugget that came from his mother was made from the same blood as his adoptive father.
The conversation with Nicholas had been everything she hoped for and everything she needed to be excited about telling her baby's father. She didn't have to be afraid anymore. They were older now, they were ready. They were together. He hadn't left her when she came to him with someone else's child, he wasn't going to leave her while she carried his. Her fingers traced over her still-flat stomach while she stood in front of the mirror in their bedroom. Her expression was full of adoration because she knew that this baby would be just as perfect as her other one was. She wasn't afraid to raise another child, her insecurities had been washed away years ago once her oldest had left home a beautiful, healthy, smart and kind man. With all the hell that they had faced, he turned out far better than she ever imagined. Her life was finally right, and this baby was going to be raised in a home that wasn't broken.
Pulling down her t-shirt, Layla smoothed it gently and took a deep breath. She could hear her best friend in the kitchen and it gave her heart a tiny flutter of anxiety and excitement. Skipping down the hall way, she whipped herself around the corner of the hall and into the kitchen. Layla hefted herself onto the counter across from the love of her life and her feet dangled, "Smells good, babe. I'm starving, is it almost ready?"

If someone would have told Patch twenty years ago that he would be in non-marital bliss with a woman deemed broken by both her parents and raising her child that didn't come from him, Patch would have rolled down a hill laughing his ass off. But as he prepared dinner for his non-traditional wife, he realised that that was exactly the situation he was in. A smile curved around his lips and he chuckled, shaking his head in amusement.
He was almost done with the stir-fry beef and french beans when Layla came down and plopped down on the counter. He nodded and turned off the heat on the stove. "I went a little crazy tonight. I was hankering for some beef and cheese so I made stir fry and baked mac and cheese. Don't judge. I'm a growing boy." Said the thirty-six year old father.
He bent down to check the oven's timer and saw that he had to wait two more minutes for the food to be cooked to perfection and he groaned. "Times like these, I wish I had PK instead of these dumb shadows."
His shadow then sucked into him and froze him for a solid second before maintaining their position. "Asshole," he shivered. Over the years, his shadow had become sentient but due to his control and the environment he was in, it became a friend rather than an enemy.
An asshole friend, but a friend no less.
He stood back up and stepped towards Layla to press a kiss on her lips. "You look beautiful." He remarked with a grin before kissing her once more, deeper and more passionate. The oven timed out and he groaned against her lips. "Cock blocker." He rolled his eyes and opened the oven door to retrieve the casserole dish from within and put it on the table
"Plate the stirfry for me, sweets?" He said as he grabbed the plates and cups, along with the cutleries and cold water from the fridge.
After setting the table, he sat down and started scooping the food for himself and then waited for Layla to do the same. "Did Nicky call today? He was texting me like crazy that I kinda ignored him after his two hundredth text." He shrugged.

All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
Watching the man she loved cook was probably one of her favorite things. He was like the housewife she never knew she wanted. Of course, she knew that it came from a place of worry, him being in charge of food because she'd gone through a love/hate relationship with her body. But the sentiment was cute and it was nice having someone that could cook. She'd struggled to learn for years, and even after all this time with him, she still wasn't quite there. However, she could do dishes and she could help plate. At least she wasn't completely useless.
The description of food made her stomach rumble and she couldn't help but smirk. The differences were blatant and almost funny. Her biggest worry during this pregnancy was about to be gaining over a hundred pounds whereas with Nicholas, she'd struggled to gain much weight at all. It had been a long time now since she battled with her disorder and she was thankful every day that she had fought it off. "You're such a fucking dork," She snorted and rolled her eyes at his 'growing boy' comment. They were on the wrong end of thirty, but she still didn't feel a day over twenty. Even having a nineteen year old, she felt young. She felt good.
Her arms stretched out as he stepped close to her and she wrapped them around him, along with her legs, full koala mode. Layla smiled against his lips and giggled when the timer went off. She let him slip out of her grasp and she tilted her head to the side as she watched him, especially as he bent down. Her smirk widened and she slipped off the counter to do as he asked. If it weren't for the fact that she was so insanely excited, she might have made a witty or sarcastic remark about how the working man didn't help the housewife with wifely duties unless she put out, but she remained quiet.
With the table set and everything toying with her heightened senses, she momentarily forgot about the news she had to deliver. She was quick to scoop heaping piles onto her plate, barely catching the question that came from him as she did so. Her eyes lifted just as she was shoveling food into her mouth and she cleared it before shrugging, "I talked to him for a short bit. I think he's got the hots for a girl in his class or something. That, or one of the other stooges did something stupid, you know." And while she hated the mini lie that escaped from her mouth, she didn't want that to be the way she told him. Layla was going to remember though, so that she could unleash on her son about how obvious he was.
She took another bite and groaned, "Your cooking skills are almost better than your sex skills, I'm just saying."

Watching Layla eat well made Patch feel so relieved. After years of watching her struggle with her body image, he was so happy to see her embracing what it is. Especially when it was his food that she consumed. There was no other joy for a cook to see their food being consumed and enjoyed.
As the topic of conversation focused on their son, Patch snorted. None the wiser, he added his own thoughts. "He saw a hairy caterpillar in the park too. He took a picture of it and added a lightning bolt. Called it Hairy Pillar."
Laughing at her comment about his skills, he jabbed his fork in her direction. "Shut the fuck up about my cooking skills. They're way better than my sex."
The conversations went on that way, not seeing a moment of peace. Just laughing and talking shit. This was their normal.

All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
Layla nearly choked on her food when he told her about her son's ridiculous joke. She blamed Patch for his sense of humor, although Nicholas was far less crude than they were. Of course she had to wonder if the three stooges were just on good behavior around them because they were the parents, but it didn't quite make sense for them to be since the pair were much cooler than any other parents. "You can't even give him a hard time for that, that's some shit you would do," She giggled and placed her hand over her mouth.
Layla held her hands up in a surrendering motion when he pointed his fork at her. She couldn't keep the grin from her face. "You're right, at least when you cook you know when to pull out," She bit down on her lip to keep from erupting into laughter again. She'd basically just gave away her own news, but she wasn't sure if he'd have caught onto it. This was normal for them, the crude remarks and silly jokes. She couldn't think of a time when they'd ever stopped being this way.
It was a wonder Nick turned out to be as sweet as he was.
Once they were both finished with their food, Layla stood up and started clearing the table. He cooked, she usually cleaned. She knew what was coming and her excitement was about to bubble over from holding it in, but she wanted to do it smoothly. She placed all the dishes in the sink and started washing them, humming and dancing as she did so.

"Fair point," Patch responded with a shrug. That was the kind of shit he did on the daily. He wasn't sure exactly why Layla was still with him.
When Layla made the crude joke, Patch's jaw slacked before he scooped a spoonful of macaroni and flung it at her. "Dirty mouth!" He exclaimed before laughing.
As Layla washed the dishes, Patch lounged in the chair behind her, watching her dance. He drank his water and admired his wife from behind. She had filled out over the years, her curves accentuating her body, making her look leaner than before.
Before he could think too much, he got up and wrapped his arms around her waist, pressing a kiss against the back of her neck. "Stop looking so sexy doing menial tasks, please."

All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
Her mind was buzzing so much that she just tried to ease it by humming. If she wasn't careful, she'd explode with happiness and she wasn't quite sure what that was like. Her life had been trying, it'd been messy and she'd struggled to be genuinely happy for so long that she always wondered if she ever would be. There were always moments where she was, but then something would happen and it would all get ruined. The last six years of her life had been better than she could have imagined. She had a perfect world and still, the little nugget growing inside her was only going to make it better.
She heard him get up and she leaned back against him as his arms wound around her waist. Layla pressed her cheek against his and smiled, "I can't help that you love me as much as you do. It's out of my control." She turned her face and gave him a big, sloppy kiss on the cheek before pulling his arms tighter around her.
Now was a good time. She could do it now. Her hands covered his and she guided them to place them on her stomach. After a moment of remembering the first time she'd been pregnant with him by her side, she smiled, "Did you ever imagine we'd be such good parents? Two fucked up kids raised one perfect kid." She paused and took a deep breath, her smile widening, "What are the odds that we raise another perfect one?"

"Fuck that, I don't love you." Patch mumbled against her skin. "I crave you." He sighed and accepted the kiss on his cheek, chuckling at how wet it felt. "Could you hurry up? I need you in my bed like two minutes ago."
Patch's smile softened as she spoke. He thought about Nick and how well adjusted he surprisingly was. And as she continued, Patch laughed and buried his face in her neck. "I mean I'm pretty sure Nick would have to do the raising but I think I could be a cool dad again." He said, completely missing the point of Layla's words.

All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
Layla looked at him with a scrunched up face, "You fucking liar, you love the fuck outta me. And you crave me. You know you can feel both." She rolled her eyes when he poked at her to hurry up. Of course he wanted her in his bed, he always did. It was probably why Nicholas was so happy to be moved out in his own place and away from their gross, oversharing. She grinned at the thought and shrugged, "Gotta make sure their clean, besides, it isn't my fault that you're a horny little bunny rabbit and that I'm the sexiest woman you've ever met in your life." Even if she was pregnant, her eyes dropped down briefly and she smirked.
His arms remained around her and she reached back to run her fingers through his hair and down his neck when he buried his face in hers. With the hand that still rested on his, she laced her fingers through them and smiled. "You would be a pretty cool dad, even though you're old now and not quite as hip, but I don't think it'll mind too much," She wondered if she'd been obvious enough in her words that he'd catch it this time. Layla remained there, gently stroking his neck while she waited for the lightbulb to go off.

Patch childishly mimicked Layla even though he knew she was right. Of course he loved her. More than anything in the world. "Saying I love you is fucking pedestrian, Layla!" He elongated the syllables to her name.
"It is most definitely your fault. You with the eyes and the lips and the boobs and the ass that won't quit. It's entirely your fault that I'm a horny little bunny."
He hummed his approval as her hand started to run through his hair. He snorted when Layla said he wasn't hip anymore. But the way Layla worded her sentence struck him as odd before he realised it. Immediately he stepped away from her just so he could turn her around to face him. His eyes then traveled down to her stomach and then back up at her face. "No." He breathed, just as the back of his eyes started to prick.

All You Have Is Your Fire

When he stepped away from her, she knew he'd caught it. She turned around and watched his eyes drop. Lightbulb. She was trying her hardest not to smile too wide, but it was hopeless. She was so happy and her heart felt like it was expanding in her chest. They were going to have a baby, one that was all theirs. Another perfect little human. And this time, she didn't have to worry about what it would grow up to be like because Patch was the other half and she knew every facet of him.
Layla took a few steps forward so that she was in front of him. Her hands reached up and she cupped his face, "Can you believe it?" Her voice was barely above a whisper, she felt ridiculously happy and she didn't know how to let it out. While he seemed shocked, she knew that it wasn't the shocked that she'd been when she found out about Nicky. It was so relieving to know that this pregnancy wouldn't be as devastating as her first had been. Every day she spent regretting the way she reacted to her beautiful little boy. This time, she felt like she could make up for it.
"That's why Nicky was blowing up your phone, I uh, I told him first," She said slowly, her eyes remaining on his. "I hope you're not mad, it's just, you know.... He was my baby and I didn't want him to think that...I didn't want him to be hurt because he's not yours by blood, ya know?" She was stumbling through her words and rambling, but she was so excited, she could barely stand it.

He gripped her wrists when she cupped his face, his tears falling immediately after. "Oh my God, Lay. It's our...we...that's mine." He put one hand down over her stomach and closed his eyes. "Fuck..." he breathed, a smile curving his lips.
When he found out that Layla had told Nick first, Patch felt relieved before he burst out laughing when she said she hoped he wasn't mad. How could he be mad? Nick was Layla's blood.
"Blood doesn't even matter. Tell him he can have a pint of mine if that's what makes him mine because he is. And this one is. And you...you are mine. I don't care if that makes me sound like a possessive control freak but you are all mine. By choice." He pulled her into a tight hug before kissing her lips. "Oh my fucking God I'm gonna be a dad again."
Patch got down on his knees and pulled up Layla's shirt and kissed her stomach. "It's your dad, I don't care if you don't have ears yet. You should know me." He pressed his lips against her stomach again and hugged her mid section.

All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
The tears that feel from his eyes only made tears spring to hers. His reaction couldn't have been better and she just felt this overwhelming love and adoration for him. It was all she wanted, someone that was happy that she was carrying their child. While she hadn't gotten that from the sperm donor for Nicholas, she had gotten it from Patch then and she was getting it even more from him now. Her thumbs brushed along his cheek and she smiled at him and nodded, "It's yours, baby. One hundred percent yours."
She supposed she should have expected him to laugh. It was silly for her to think he could be mad at her over telling her son about his brother, but she had to worry about those things sometimes. And it was more that she was worried that he'd have been upset that he wasn't there when Nicholas found out. Her two favorite men were inseparable, she didn't want to take that away by telling Nick on her own, but she felt it was just the right thing to do.
Her arms wrapped around him and she smiled against his lips. It didn't bother her that he sounded possessive because he was theirs just as much as they were his. Layla wouldn't dream of letting him go and prior to them being together, she'd struggled with the idea that this very thing would have happened with anyone else. It had always made her uncomfortable to think that he could have found someone else in all those years that they were trying to fix each other and not be broken anymore. He was the father of her son, but he could have ended up with another woman who mothered a child that was his by blood. It was a crushing relief that she got to be that woman and that they'd get to raise another child together.
He dropped down to the floor in front of her and she stroked his hair when he kissed her stomach. She wasn't very far along, she knew, but it still made her smile when he started talking to the smol bean that was growing inside her. The last words he spoke made the tears that had filled her eyes fall in a rush and she leaned down to hug him against her tighter, "I'm so glad it's you, Patch."

He looked up at Layla with clear adoration in his eyes and nodded before kissing her stomach again. "Fuck!" He exclaimed as he sprung up to hug her. "What the fuck, Layla, I'm gonna be a dad again!" He laughed, burying his face in her neck.
There was no describing how he was feeling. Happiness didn't quite cut it. He was a mixture of emotions all clogged in one and he couldn't be happier.
The fact that Layla, of all people, was the one bearing his child, he couldn't have picked a better woman.

She laughed at his exclamation and she hugged him back tighter, her hand placed on the back of his neck, "I know! I'm so excited!" Layla pulled back after a moment and replaced the hand that was on his neck on his cheek instead. She grinned, "I already made my first appointment and this time you're coming with me. We have to tell Mom and Dad still and Emma. Unless Nicky already got to her, but I figure she'd be blowing up your phone if that was the case."
She pressed her lips to his and smiled against them, "Nicky is on his way over. I was on the phone with him while you were cooking so he should be here any time. Just prepare yourself for this." She laughed and kissed him again just as she heard a car door shut outside. "Speak of the devil."
There was no knock, no hesitation at the door, it took him three large, bounding strides before he was at the door and through it. "I'm home!" Nicholas announced with a grin, his eyes took in the scene around him and his grin widened. "You told him! Finally!" As Layla was pulling back, he replaced her and hugged his dad.
Layla snorted, "Yeah and you almost gave it away, you dork." But she wasn't upset, watching the way things were unfolding, she didn't think she'd ever feel upset again. "Uh, hello, I'm the one carrying the baby, I deserve the most hugs here!"
