All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
Nick rested his chin in his hand and raised an eyebrow as he listened to his dad's idea of announcing the pregnancy. His look was mirrored by his mother. They gave each other a look and Layla was the first to grin. His idea wasn't terrible, and he knew his family better than anyone. Who was Layla to judge for his quirks, it was why she loved him as much as she did. It was what she loved about her son that he'd gotten from Patch.
Layla ran her fingers across his cheek and kissed his shoulder, "You are very lame, baby. But it sounds perfect." It wouldn't be them if there wasn't a hint of lameness to it. Layla would claim that the lameness all came from him, of course. She was cool.
Nick's nose scrunched up and he frowned, "I dunno about that. I mean, you and mom can be all dorky, but I'm cool and I don't do that dweebish stuff."

Patch rolled his eyes at the look his wife and son shared. "Judge me all you want." He shrugged before turning to Layla with a chuckle.
He turned to Nick and raised his eyebrows in disbelief. "I've got an upwards of about a thousand texts from this week alone that say otherwise." He smirked. "Even Emma thinks you're a dweeb."
Slinging an arm around Layla's shoulder, Patch pulled her close to kiss her on top of her head. "Besides, you can't escape genetics. Look at your mom." He squeezed her shoulder and chuckled. "She's married to me, you're not so far off the dork train."

Nick snorted and rolled his eyes, "Emma is a dick, so does it really count what she says?"
Layla pressed her lips into a thin line and reached across the table to smack her son upside the head, "Don't you talk about my girl that way. She's an angel and you're a punk. Your dad's right, you can't escape the dweeb, it rubs off after a while. And you've clung to Patch since forever." Nick swatted at her hands and ducked so that she didn't smack him again.
He mocked Layla as she spoke and shook his head, "Ya'll are a bunch of crazies. I'm pretty sure I was adopted, ain't no dweebishness here, Mom. You and Dad can have all that to yourselves. I'll make sure my little brother, because it's so gonna be a boy, doesn't turn out like you two." Although, he knew that with his weird socks and the obsession with superheroes that they were right. He hadn't had much chance of escaping that as he grew up.

Snorting at Nick's response, calling his sister/aunt/best friend a dick, Patch shook his head. Another burst of laughter escaped when Layla smacked him upside his head.
"Emma is not an angel, Layla. It's like saying...you're...an angel." He grinned toothily before scooting away from her. "But your mother is right, listen to her. I will laugh when you have a wife, or a husband, no judgment here, and they call you out on your socks and your comics. Because honey, you're a dork."
He leaned over and ruffled Nick's hair again, really messing it up. "You need to cut your hair." Patch announced.

At Patch's response, Nick sprayed and sputtered out in laughter. Cackling and snorting, doubled over with his hand smacking the table, he couldn't stop. He eventually took deep breaths to regain his composure and he pointed at his mom, "Accurate." But then Patch went on and pointed out all of Nick's quirks and weirdness, which only made Nick roll his eyes again, "Nah, I'll totally outgrow those things...eventually." Even though he was already twenty almost.
Layla glared at Patch, but refrained from smacking him, instead she shot him a look, "You're a dick, too, Patch," She muttered at him.
Her eyes lifted to the crazy halo around her son's head of hair. She couldn't help but grin, "That's another reason you came over, right, Nicky?"
Nicholas tried smoothing his hair back into place and he nodded reluctantly, "Yes, Mama. But can you, like, not make me look like a nerd. That'd be good. Do the spiky thing that I like, yeah?" She rolled her eyes and nodded, pushing the chair back and standing up. Her hand slid up his arm and around his neck as she placed a kiss on his cheek. Nick made a loud gagging noise. "Seriously, you guys are so grossly affectionate. I hope that didn't rub off on me, too."

His son's reaction was priceless and though there was some truth to his words, Patch couldn't deny that to him, Layla had been a godsend in so many ways. And he knew that she knew exactly how he felt about her. She didn't understand it but she knew.
"Oh please, Nick. Sweet child of mine, you are never going to outgrow being exactly like me." He laughed before scrunching his nose up in a cutesy fashion towards Layla. "That you love to ride, Layla." He muttered under his breath with a chuckle.
Patch reached a hand up to scratch the side of Layla's head in affection before letting her go. "Mmhm. Don't even with me on that. You want exactly this." He stood up and slid an arm around Layla's waist.
"You better wash those dishes, young lady. Or no milk for bed." He pressed a kiss to Layla's temple and sighed. "Okay, baby mama, Imma go slay some dragons on the computer, don't make our son look like a nerd. Do the spiky thing." He grinned and released Layla before walking over to Nick and kissing him on his forehead. "Good to have you home, son."

Nicholas sighed loudly, "A guy can dream, Daddio. And I do, frequently." Because if he was going to be a nerd for the rest of his life, he was pretty sure he'd never get what they had. Girls only went for the fake, sexy kind of nerds. Or they went for guys like Ethan, all emotionally unavailable and such.
Layla did smack Patch after his comment this time and she rolled her eyes, but was smiling despite her best attempts. If she had said he was wrong, she'd be lying. Her eyes momentarily dropped to her stomach. After all, that was sort of how this little peanut happened.
Nick shrugged at his comment, trying not to look for too long because it did always make him pretty happy to see how far they'd come together. It was hard to believe that it took them as long as it had, but he didn't point that out. Layla had always explained to him that it was because they weren't ready for each other, that they just needed the time apart so that they could fix themselves before coming together so that it worked. Six years later and Nick struggled to find a weak spot in their relationship. Even when they fought it sounded just the same as it always had.
With Patch's arm around her, she turned into him and wrapped her arms around him briefly. Layla gave him a snort about the dishes before nodding and smiling once he let her go, "Alright, alright, the spiky thing, I hear you."
Nick gave her a cheesy grin and wiped his forehead with the back of his hand dramatically as if he wasn't used to it, "Happy to be here, Pops."
