And though it's just a line to you
For me it's true
Halley sighed at Bailey's answer. It was hard to give advice on something she hadn't gone through. Her own failures at romantic entanglements had left her a little raw when it came to relationships as a whole but Nick was quickly and surely remedying it. But they were still so new at it.
What Bailey was going through was different and it had spanned for years. Bailey was a lot stronger than Halley too, so if she was worried, was Halley's advice going to make a difference?
"Were there any signs before? When you two were still together, the first time he left. Did he lie about leaving or give you any indication that he left for other reasons besides his work?"
And never seemed so right before

where did you go to end up right back here?
Letting out a groan, she raked her fingers through her hair, "No. That's the killer part. He was perfect boyfriend material. Hell, he could have been husband material if he hadn't left." She'd had a plan in her head about where they'd have been in five or ten years and at this point in her life, according to her plan, she'd have been married for a significant amount of time. She might have even had kids by now.
"He never made me feel unwanted or unloved. He may have lied to me a time or two about small things, but it was never anything huge. He told me he was leaving a short time before he did. I just couldn't wrap my head around it at the time. I was only seventeen," Very nearly eighteen. She was supposed to graduate with him and Will and help Gabriel find Will a girl. Then they had started living her ten year plan while she had to start over.
Bailey bit her lower lip and shook her head, "It seems silly to be worried because he's perfect. He always has been. I'm just so worried I'm going to have to start over again."

Halley was beginning to like Gabriel less and less. If he was so perfect, he wouldn't make the girl he supposedly love feel so uncertain. Especially not her best friend. Bailey, though far from perfect, was a complete person. Halley had so admired her since they first started nursing school. To see her breaking down over this man who left her to pursue a career just felt ridiculous.
But Halley also couldn't help seeing the way Bailey spoke about him. Bailey was crying but everything coming out of her was said with a certain reverence. Halley didn't know whether that was love or not but if he brought out such a feeling from Bailey, he couldn't really be all that bad, could he? Bailey was an excellent judge of character. She wouldn't just throw everything into one basket unless she knew it was the right thing to do.
"Bailey, you know I'm behind you one hundred percent. I will put the hurt on him if necessary but there has to be a reason you're agonising over him like this." Halley gave her a small smile before pulling Bailey in for another hug. "Remember, whatever it is, you don't owe him anything. You have every right to make him put you on a pedestal. And I mean...he came back here. Of all places. There must be a reason for that and it can't just be because of work."
And never seemed so right before

The biggest reason for Bailey coming to Halley was that it was a fresh outlook on the situation. Obviously Halley was her best friend and she'd usually come to her about anything anyway, but Gabriel talk was usually strictly meant for Jack because he knew Gabriel and could offer her a perspective that she may have missed. The trouble with Jack knowing Gabriel was that he also happened to adore Gabriel and wanted him as an older brother. The claim he staked on Gabriel was sort of endearing and adorable, but also incredibly annoying.
Halley having not met Gabriel meant that she couldn't immediately be charmed by him. Completely objective about their relationship save for the part of wanting to protect Bailey, it seemed logical to talk to her about it. And the progress that was being made in her mind was significant. She may not have reached it on her own. Bailey wrapped her arms tight around Halley and squeezed. She loved her best friend more than she ever expressed and it seemed to just become more and more after this conversation.
Bailey nodded against Halley's shoulder and let out a sigh before she pulled away. "I'm glad I could talk to you about this before you meet him. Jack is useless when it comes to advice about Gabriel. Once you meet him, you'll understand why. I think even Nick will be mesmerized by him."

"Jack and Nick are both puppies. They would love everyone." Halley smiled affectionately, her gaze moving in the direction of Nick's home. "And I've got my wits about me. Gabriel won't charm me unless I let him." She said with determination. Truth was, Halley was such an easy to person to please. She wasn't any different than Jack or Nick in that respect. She too was a puppy when it came to new people. But she also loved Bailey a lot more than she did anyone else.
She cupped Bailey's cheek and pulled her face up to look at her. "All I want is for you to be happy. The ice cream is going to help with that. And so is this movie." She pressed her lips against Bailey's forehead before moving away to grab the spoons and the tub of ice cream. It had gotten soft but it was still cold so Halley enjoyed it anyway.
She fiddled with the remote and let Arya stretch between Bailey and her.
