where did you go to end up right back here?
It had been about a week since the night she'd spent with her ex boyfriend. While she still used the term ex, she wasn't quite sure they were considered exes anymore. The whole day and night had been a mess of emotions. Good things, bad things, love, frustration. She wasn't quite sure how things would progress and she hadn't had much time to discuss it with him because of her work schedule. Although he'd asked to see her on her day off, Bailey had her sights on spending her day off with her best friend while they both had the same day off.
It was late by the time that she went to Halley's house, waiting until after she had dinner with her new boyfriend that was the epitome of adorable. Bailey didn't mind waiting, she'd gotten a significant amount of things done at home and even got dinner with her little brother. Jack had been so happy when she told him that Gabriel was back and insisted that they all get together first chance that they could. After grabbing a few bottles of wine, a jug of ice cream and changing into footie pajamas, Bailey made her way to her friend's apartment.
She knocked on the door, wiggling in the cold with the jug of ice cream. The pajamas, although fuzzy, didn't work against the wind or the frozen dessert. "Halleyyyy, hurrryyyyy," She shivered and chattered at the door.

And though it's just a line to you
For me it's true
Halley had been setting up for Bailey's arrival immediately after she shooed Nick out of her apartment. Hesitantly, but it had to be done. She hadn't seen Bailey in what seemed to be forever and they were due a girl's night in.
She was climbing into her Totoro onesie when she heard the door. A squeak came from the healer as she hastily zipped up the onesie and rushed to the door. "Sorry! Hi hello come innnn!" She pulled her best friend in and hugged her tightly before pulling her further into the house.
"Baileeeey I've missed you!" She hugged Bailey again and grinned. "What's this what's this?" She took the jug from Bailey and set it down on the coffee table in the living room before going over to the kitchen to grab the spoons and the basket of snacks she had already prepared.
And never seemed so right before

where did you go to end up right back here?
When Bailey was pulled into her best friend's home, she couldn't help but smile. She felt that they were two peas in the same pod, both nurses, both rather cheerful and optimistic people. She hugged her back tight and pinched her cheek when she pulled back. "I missed you too, lovey! I came with the best ice cream in Oregon. Are you sure it was okay for me to come over? I really didn't mean for you to give your hot cop the boot." Although this was a must. She needed sound advice and she wasn't sure where else to get it.
Especially given that everyone else in her life basically knew Gabriel and adored him with every fiber of their being. Didn't give her many people to ask.
Bailey was comfortable enough in Halley's apartment that she didn't hesitate for long before she made herself comfortable in the living room. She folded her legs like a pretzel and waited for her best friend to return. "How is Hot Cop by the way? Things still going as smoothly as ever? I need to meet him, like, outside of when he brings you lunch at work." It was sort of convenient that she was dating a cop because they found themselves in the hospital more frequently than anyone might expect.

Halley hummed her approval as Arya slinked in curiously, weaving through Halley's feet before jumping on to the couch beside Bailey. She bopped her head against Bailey's elbow, asking for a pat.
"Yes, it's long overdue and my hot cop doesn't mind. He has to work the morning shift tomorrow anyway." Halley smiled affectionately as her cheeks heated up at the thought of how her new boyfriend had trouble letting her go. She had been just as clingy, which wasn't an attractive trait on her, now that she thought about it but she shook her head.
Tonight was for her best girlfriend.
"He's fine," Halley returned to the living room with the spoons and the tray of snacks and settled in next to Bailey, fishing for the remote control in the couch. She switched her TV on and scrolled through her Netflix account. "Okay, he's more than fine and yes you do. You will love him, he's so thoughtful and kind and intuitive. He's amazing. We're definitely setting a dinner date for us."
She turned to Bailey and fluttered her eyelashes. "Maybe we could make it a double date? Can I set you up?"

Watching the way she talked about her boyfriend only made her smile wider. She'd seen Halley go through some rough relationships, none of the men really being able to give her the love and attention she deserved. A sweet girl like her needed the best man in the world and from the sounds of it she'd found him. It reminded her much of how she had felt towards Gabriel and sometimes still felt towards him. Bailey's hand stroked the cat beside her, scratching under her chin and she smiled.
Bailey turned her attention to Halley fully once she was sitting beside her and she couldn't help the smirk that graced her lips. It was obvious how smitten she was. Her face was getting red and she gushed the way that every girl gushed about their favorite man. "We absolutely should. He sounds like a complete sweetheart. Much better than the others I've met," She gave a firm nod and grinned again. "I'm glad you're happy, babe, you deserve that kind of man."
When her friend began to flutter her eyelashes, Bailey narrowed her eyes. A double date. And Halley wanted to set her up. Wouldn't that just get under Gabriel's skin. She bit down on her lower lip and grabbed Halley's hand, "I need to tell you something before I can say yes or no, okay?" She took a deep breath and looked down, suddenly very unsure of herself. "Do you remember me talking about my ex, the one that I dated through school?"

Bailey had been Halley's friend for the past ten years and she had seen Halley heartbroken more times than she would have liked. It was always the same story. Halley put more effort into the relationship than the guy ever did. Which was why it was nice to be in a relationship where the effort came from both sides. And she knew Bailey would see it when she met Nick.
"Thank you, Bailey." Halley squeezed the brunette's hand and smiled.
Her interest was piqued when Bailey mentioned an old flame. She vaguely remembered the brunette speaking about him through the years but Halley would always see the wistful look on Bailey's face whenever she did. Like she still wanted him back.
"Kind of." She responded as she pulled both her feet up to tuck under her.

where did you go to end up right back here?
If anyone had asked Bailey whether she wanted Gabriel to come back and sweep her off her feet, she'd have said no. At the time, she was holding onto her anger as tightly as she could. She didn't want someone that could leave her without anything to hold onto. But she also knew that her words and what she looked like while talking about him were vastly different things. She'd always loved him, no matter how hard she tried to ignore it.
With Halley's acknowledgment, she continued slowly, "He's, well, he's back. In Oregon. Apparently to stay." It was still a shock that she could go to his apartment whenever she wanted. She hadn't, but she could have and his things would be there even if he wasn't. She dragged her hands down her face and groaned, "We ran into each other last week and things happened, Hal. Things I never would have done if I had my wits about me. But he makes all of those wits fly out the window."
She realized she sounded melodramatic, but the whole thing was a bit of a soap opera. "I haven't seen him since because of work and all, but, I'm not even sure what to do."

Halley listened as Bailey spoke, once again the tone she spoke in sort of conveyed a much different emotion than her words. The blonde squeezed her friend's hand and smiled sympathetically. She was by no means an expert in relationships but she did know Bailey.
"How did you end things with him before?" Halley asked in a tone she usually reserved for her patients. Calm and analytical. Bailey would recognise it as she also had that tone down pat.

Bailey was suddenly very embarrassed by the answer to Halley's question. She scrunched her face and laughed sheepishly, "Uh, well, we uh. I...I uh." She didn't know how to make the words leave her mouth. It made her sound slinky and like a slag in her opinion. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly before she pushed the words out quickly, "I stayed the night with him."
Her hand clamped over her mouth and she fell back on the couch with another groan, "Halley what was I thinking? What am I doing?" She wasn't that girl, she didn't do silly hook-ups and she didn't go home after the first date with a guy. Of course, it was Gabriel, her best friend and the love of her young life. But even so, she should have set boundaries.

Halley gave a small laugh at Bailey's embarrassment. "Oh honey, don't be so embarrassed by it." She pulled her friend into a hug and squeezed tightly.
"But also, I meant when he left the first time. Was it an amicable break up or was it ugly?"

It was embarrassing though. More so when she found out that it wasn't what Halley had meant initially. Bailey frowned and shrugged, "It was amicable up until he didn't talk to me for ten years." She had gotten over it rather quickly when Gabriel was in front of her, but it still frustrated her to some degree.
She picked Arya up and held her close to her chest, snuggling into her fur, "I get stupid when I'm around him." And she got stupid when she talked about him. She was such a forgiving person as it was, but she didn't even consider not forgiving him. She loved him, what was she supposed to do? "Help me."

Wincing at Bailey's response, Halley tried to make sense of her situation. She was still thinking when Bailey continued talking, causing Halley's facial expression to soften.
"Ten years is a really long time to just go dark on you." Halley sighed. "Maybe..." she started before huffing at herself. "Um, why did he leave?" She asked, squeezing Bailey's hand to let her know that whatever came out of this conversation, Halley was not going anywhere.

Having it confirmed, what she already felt, was not what she had wanted to hear. She knew Halley couldn't just tell her what she needed to hear, but she was hoping for something other than what she thought. A new perspective, some new hope, a new light to shed on the situation. She could feel her eyes brimming with tears as she thought about how unlikely their reconciliation was. It had seemed so easy at his apartment, talking, reliving everything. It was so natural and easy, even though she knew it wasn't necessarily right.
Sniffling, she squeezed Halley's hand back and cleared her throat so that she could answer the question. "His job. He's a recruiter for the academy and he left to follow his job. I think that's why I can't hate him or be angry with him..." She trailed off quietly. After another moment, she found her voice again, "You know I could never leave Oregon behind, not really. Not with Jack here and my dad. Not with work. And now I've got you, this perfect best friend. I couldn't leave that all behind. That's why it had to end."

Halley wrapped an arm around Bailey's shoulder, pulling her close when she saw the brunette starting to cry. It alarmed her how much this was affecting her usually feisty best friend.
Her answer had Halley nodding before she let Bailey go. "So, there's really nothing stopping both of you from picking things up where you left off, is there?" She asked. "Unless you think he will leave again if he got a better offer?"
Being included in the reason why Bailey couldn't leave made Halley smile, the tell tale prickling behind her eyes starting. There was a lot to be said about being the reason why someone would stay put. That Bailey thought to include her along with her family was so heartwarming.

Bailey wiped at her eyes in frustration and tried to straighten up. She was no usually so emotional, or rather her emotions cycled through rather quickly. With Halley asking the questions that she needed answered, she knew that she was getting somewhere with this. It was absolutely necessary that she went to Halley for advice. She took it all so seriously rather than playing it off on Bailey's over-active brain.
Was there nothing stopping them? Bailey had to wonder if he'd really do it again. Whether he'd pick her back up, whisk her away and then drop her again. It was a hard question to think on, it was the question that had been looming over her the last few days. The only thing that had kept her from being full speed ahead on having him back was that she couldn't be certain he wouldn't leave her again. He had left his best friend behind, what was to stop him from leaving her again, too?
She sniffled again and sighed, "I can't even be sure. I trust him, really I do, but I know that he won't be able to give me a straight answer to that question either. Not without potentially lying to me."
