I'm so caught up
I don't know what it is
Ten years in the military was not supposed to land him a gig babysitting some dead magnate's kid, but there Hunter was, getting into a monkey suit for his first job outside of the military. All he knew about the family he was about to protect was that the siblings lost their parents in a suspect car accident and now their eldest is set to take over the throne and the youngest needed protection.
His only contact was his former sergeant major who had been assigned to the family since she was much younger than he was, so he was glad there would be a familiar face with him occasionally. She was the one he would be answering to anyway so he got ready with that in mind.
Hunter was so used to army fatigues and t-shirts that being in a tucked in button up, pants and a jacket felt so unnatural. Even as he was walking up to the house he would be spending way too much time in from here on out, he was still questioning his choice to serve a socialite.
A quick briefing with Sergeant Major West led him to believe that there was more to the family that what met the eye. He was told to sit in the living room to wait for his new employer. He took a seat and waited.
But it seems she got me twisted

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
The fact that Charlotte was of drinking age and couldn't manage to look out for herself in the eyes of her brother was ridiculous. She had told him countless times that she didn't need a babysitter, nor did she want one, and yet there she was about to meet the man that was about to follow her around for god knew how long. The only thing she could hope was that he or she was not a complete dud. It was bad enough living with William, she didn't need another bore.
Charlotte took a deep breath, tightened her ponytail and came bouncing down the stairs. She wasn't quite sure what to expect when she came into the living room. Her brother wasn't around to meet with them, so she didn't feel like she had to be on good behavior. She could be as brutal as she wanted to be and as blunt as she needed to be. There were rules he was going to follow whether he wanted to or not. If she was going to be babysat, she was going to set boundaries.
She swung around the corner and halted abruptly when she saw some gruff-looking 'hard ass' sitting on her couch. He looked so out of place and she had to place a hand over her mouth to cover the smirk on her lips. Once she was composed, she cleared her throat and stepped further into the living room, "Uh, hi?"
But I don't want to cause any pain

I'm so caught up
I don't know what it is
Hunter was beginning to feel itchy under his shirt and wondered whether he should just say fuck it to the dress code. He respected Sergeant Major West but she had to cut him some slack. He wasn't earning enough to buy him whatever she had been wearing.
And the kid was taking her own sweet time coming down that Hunter got off his seat twice before settling down on the couch. He loosened his tie, tightened it, took off his jacket and put it back on. He didn't like sitting still and apparently that was basically what he had to do for a long unforeseeable future.
He was about to stand up again when he heard a small voice coming from his side. He stood up and turned to where the voice came from and froze slightly. The girl looked like a china doll. Big blue eyes, pale face, dark hair.
When he regained composure, he approached the young woman and nodded. "Morning. I'm Hunter Trudeau."
But it seems she got me twisted

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Getting a head on look at him, Charlotte assessed him more thoroughly. The way he stood screamed military, which would explain the hard ass look. But his posture was the only thing that said hard ass because his face said puppy. His blue eyes were more icy than her own and his features, while sharp, seemed soft in a way. She could openly admit that he was cute and for that she was thankful, not that her brother chose him for that reason. It was just an added bonus.
Hunter Trudeau. She gave him one more once over before looking back up at him.
"Charlotte Spencer, but you obviously knew that given that you're my new babysitter, right?" Charlotte hadn't meant it to sound so biting, but it still made her blood boil that she needed to have someone watching her at all hours of the day. William had to know that she wasn't going to stop doing whatever reckless and stupid things she wanted to do. If anything he was just making her want to do more. "But don't call me Charlotte or Miss Spencer, please. I go by Char or...no you know what, just Char." Lottie was reserved for family which the only one she had left was Will.
Charlotte folded her arms across her chest, "I guess we can start with your questions? Anything you need to know for your enthralling job?"
But I don't wanna cause any pain

I'm so caught up
I don't know what it is
She was liking this new arrangement just as much as he was, so that was something. It was a bad something, however, since it usually meant she was going to do anything to lose him.
When she introduced herself and told him what to call her, his head bowed slightly and a smirk curved his lips. "I don't think my employer would like me getting too familiar with you, Miss Spencer." He responded.
Hunter looked around, making sure nobody else was around before fully focusing his eyes on her, something he was told made people slightly nervous. He didn't know why it did but he also had a sneaking suspicion that this girl wasn't one of those people. "I know you don't want this security detail but as long as you co-operate, we won't have any problems. All you need to do is let me know where you're going. I'll keep my distance."
He cleared his throat and offered her a small smile. "I've done a great job over the years of making myself scarce whenever necessary so if you don't want me there, you won't see me. All I need to know is where you intend to go. Can we at least agree on that?"
But it seems she got me twisted

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
His employer? Charlotte shook her head and let out a huff, "Ya know I don't see you following my brother around for the next however many months or years or however long he thinks is a good idea. So that makes me your employer and you can either listen to me or I will make your job as difficult as I possibly can." She didn't ask for the Spencer name, she didn't particularly enjoy all of the perks that came with it. Now that that included a tagalong, she definitely didn't want to be known as Miss Spencer.
When he stared at her, she glared right back, not removing her eyes from his. She tightened her arms across her chest and clenched her jaw. As long as she co-operated, as if that was actually going to happen. It was bad enough being expected to act like some prim and proper princess, she didn't think she could manage the cooperation part. He was in for a rough time with her and if he thought that by smiling and being all polite was going to get him anywhere, he was sadly mistaken. That was the whole reason she had a babysitter to begin with, Will knew that she couldn't stand her responsibilities.
"I doubt that. Don't take this too personally, but my business is mine and having someone hovering invisible or not, isn't very comforting. I don't want you here, I don't need to be watched like a hawk and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that my brother sees how stupid this whole thing is." Charlotte let out a sigh and laughed, "All I wanted was someone cool if I was going to get stuck with a shadow."
But I don't wanna cause any pain

Hunter's jaw muscles tightened when she responded. A brat, as he had first thought. That face did nothing to change that. In fact, he would wager she used her looks to her advantage whenever possible.
She may not like him being her bodyguard but that's not going to stop him from doing his job.
He tried not to laugh when she said she wanted someone cool. Tough nuts, princess, Hunter thought to himself before nodding. He decided to change tactics but still maintain his previous stance. "Alright, Char. Whatever you say."

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte knew how she came off. It was easier to be a brat than it was to just accept whatever she was told. She hadn't been quite as fussy about things before her parents died, but with her older brother hell bent on keeping her smothered and safe, she couldn't stand it anymore. Their relationship had suffered the moment he was set to take on the family business and for him to treat her like she was five years old was unfair. She didn't need to tell the man in front of her the story of her life and she had no intentions of doing so. She'd let him believe whatever he wanted, it wasn't his job to get to know her after all. He'd made that explicitly clear.
The fact that he'd done as she asked, resorting to calling her Char instead wasn't a huge step, but she was going to take what she could get. However, she didn't believe him that he'd go with whatever she said. Something about him said that he was going to be a stubborn ass the whole time. At least that was better than being a bump on a pickle during their time together.
"Alright, now that we've gotten that out of the way...can I just set some ground rules? It's easier to just humor me, at least that way I won't be a total dick right off the bat, yeah?" She shifted her weight onto one foot and arched an eyebrow.
But I don't wanna cause any pain

Although he was more than willing to listen to orders from a woman, having to swallow his pride just to "humour" a kid was not high on his list. But one thing people depended on him with was that whatever he did, he got results.
And if that meant standing there and listening to some banal speech about ground rules from someone who looked and acted like his younger sister, then so be it. She obviously needed to feel like she held all the power and she was right to think that he worked for her so he will listen.
"Go ahead."
But it seems she got me twisted

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
She could read it all over his face how reluctant he was. Funny thing was, her ground rules weren't all that bad. She'd thought about them for a while, ready to dish them out as soon as she could. The biggest thing she was trying to get out of this was to feel as normal as possible even with a lurker. She wanted to be familiar on some level with the person who was going to be around her more than her own brother.
Charlotte sucked in her lower lip and took a moment to organize her thoughts before she talked. She was pretty sure she'd already dug herself a hole with this guy, it wasn't going to be easy to get out of it.
"Okay, so, here's the gist of it. If I wanted to speak in formalities at all times of the day, I'd talk to my brother. If you're going to be around, I want you to talk to me like a person, not like your boss. Yes, I know, I already pulled the employer card, but I don't want to be your employer. I don't want a bodyguard as it is. So rule one, if it's just you and me somewhere in public or whatever, I don't want you to be a permanent fixture on the wall. I want you to talk to me. I'm not saying we have to be best friends and dive into our life stories, but I don't want a statue." She pursed her lips as she began pacing the room. "Rule two, be upfront with me. I hate people that tiptoe and mince their words. I won't get offended if you don't like me based on your first impression nor will I care if you disagree with my way of doing things. Just don't pretend with me because you're scared of what I'll do or say to get you in trouble. I'm not that kind of person."
Charlotte paused in her pacing and turned back to him, "Rule three, my life is mine and you don't get to talk to my brother about it. He'll ask, but you can give him the bare minimum. Okay?"
But I don't wanna cause any pain.

He simply watched as Charlotte went through her thought process and when she finally spoke, his body language made clear that he was listening. They didn't need to make this any stranger by being hostile, he understood this.
She didn't seem to want much, frankly she sounded like she just needed a friend. Living in this big house with someone like Will Spencer as a brother, it didn't take much for Hunter to gather that she didn't have many of those.
Hunter hid the smirk when she mentioned she wasn't the kind of person who would get him in trouble. He wouldn't, of course, bring up the fact that she had already threatened him with it not a few seconds ago.
The third rule, however, was not something he thought he could abide by. Just because Charlotte had already pulled the employer shit on him didn't mean he was going to disobey orders from his actual employer, the one who was going to give him his monthly paychecks.
He knew she was waiting for an answer so he nodded. He wasn't going to push the issue.
But it seems she got me twisted

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Char's eyebrows pulled together and she dropped her arms that had been gripping at her sides tightly. With a deep breath, she tried for a smile, "You know, you're going to end up liking me. I'm not as terrible as my first impression. You're just caught in the crossfire between my brother and I."
The sad part was that they'd been nearly inseparable up until the point of their parents' passing. He was hiring someone to do the job that he should have been doing; looking out for his sister. She didn't think it made sense for him to take the position in the company that they ran. It had to have been easier to find a senior employee that had been around long enough that they could be trusted to do a good job. But her arguments never got through to Will and she eventually stopped trying.
Charlotte took a seat on the couch and pulled her legs up, "I know you're probably as miserable about this situation as I am, but at least we'll suffer together."
But I don't wanna cause any pain

I'm so caught up
I don't know what it is
Hunter offered a small smile when she spoke. He didn't know how much truth that statement held because he still had to treat this as a job. A job that he decidedly did not like.
He turned as she went to the couch and all he could see as she pulled her legs up was the fact that she looked like a little girl. She was far too young to have to deal with her parents' passing, especially when it rendered this kind of security detail necessary.
Honestly, he didn't know how to respond to her words because he still needed to maintain a sense of professionalism. This was exactly why he thrived in the military. All he had to do was follow orders. What Charlotte had asked of him weren't something he was used to.
"I suppose you're right." He finally responded, almost immediately regretting his choice of words when Sergeant Major West came in. He stood at attention.
"Miss Spencer, Private Trudeau. At ease."
Hunter stood at rest and nodded at his superior. "I take it everything is in order?"
He looked to Charlotte before nodding briskly. "Yes ma'am." He responded. The redhead nodded before launching into the whole spiel about boundaries and where he will be staying. She gave him a cell phone and a small briefcase that she explained held all of his necessary equipments.
"Your things have been brought to your room so you can settle in there later but for now, you're on the clock, Private." The redhead nodded to Hunter before smiling down at Charlotte. "Your brother will be leaving in half an hour and we'll be gone for three days, Miss Spencer. Hunter is your go point for anything. Am I clear?"

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte's eyes softened when he agreed with her and she almost smiled, but it didn't quite reach her lips before Will's security detail entered the room. She'd be able to recognize the woman anywhere. It wasn't that Charlotte didn't like the woman, she did, but she had a better relationship with her than she did with her own brother now. As she filled Hunter in, Lottie considered getting up and stalking out of the room. She didn't want to be reminded that this was in fact his job. It didn't make anything easier.
Before she could get up, the woman turned her attention to her and stated that her brother would be leaving for a few days. Ironically, Lottie hadn't heard a word about it until then. Her anger was sparked and she started scratching her nail against the upholstery of the couch. She nodded stiffly and clenched her teeth to keep from saying something that would likely get back to him while he was traveling. If she was going to fight with Will it wasn't going to be through his security.
Her eyes remained fixated on her fingers and she waited until the woman left before she let out a harsh laugh, "What a fucking surprise." She didn't say it to him, so much as she just said it. The fact that Will hadn't told her he was leaving proved that they'd fallen apart the last few months and she wasn't sure they'd ever get back to where they were. She couldn't help but hate him for that.

He responded to his superior with a nod and when she left, his attention settled on the brunette. Her harsh laugh brought a small frown to his face for a second before he regained composure.
Clearly there was tension but Hunter didn't know whether it was with his superior or her brother. Either way, the strain was evident. But he didn't want to comment on it.
"Mi-Char, I have to put these in my room. Do you happen to know where it is?"
