Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Being outside of the house was sort of incredible. She wasn't doing it sneakily and she wasn't making Hunter's job harder than it had to be. He was lurking somewhere behind her while she walked down the street. It wasn't very often that she could to just explore the city because Will was so sure that something bad would happen if she did. Well, that was before she had a bodyguard to look out for her. She felt invincible and she was excited and happy and finally in some kind of good spirits.
She'd veered off to the side to look at something in the window and was so engulfed in what she was looking at that she didn't notice that she was being closed in on. She felt a hand on her waist and she turned to see if it was someone she would know or if Hunter had just given into his hidden desires. As she turned with a grin to give him a hard time, she was nose to nose with a grungy-looking man that reeked. Charlotte went to protest his hands on her and he clamped his hand over her mouth, "No no, don't speak. Don't scream. Just walk, princess Spencer." Her eyes were wide when she noticed that she was outnumbered by a few other lingering men.
He released her mouth and she nodded. His arm slipped around her shoulders and she shuddered as she took a few steps. Her eyes darted around for the familiarity of her bodyguard, but she came up short. She wondered if he'd even noticed what happened or if he thought he was still following her while following someone else. The man directed her towards an alley and he slammed her up against the brick wall of one of the buildings. "Now, we're going to take your valuables, Miss Spencer, and you're not going to say anything about it, right?" She nodded and he began moving his hands over her, scouring for jewelry and her purse.
When he reached for her bag, she yanked her arm away and shoved him so that she could make an attempt to escape, but to no avail. He grabbed her by the arm and yanked her back to slam her against the wall again, "What did I say?" He smacked her hard across the cheek and she spit blood on the ground as he reached for her things again.
But I don't wanna cause any pain

I'm so caught up
I don't know what it is
Hunter had been trying to keep to Charlotte's rules for a few weeks now. Eventhough he was still not quite upfront with Charlotte, he thought they had built enough of a rapport not to get on each other's nerves.
Additionally, Hunter was grateful that somehow Charlotte had picked up on how uncomfortable his suits have made him that she had asked her brother to forego the suits entirely. If he was the type, he would have burned all his suits but unfortunately he still needed them because the compromise was that he would wear the suits during formal events. He didn't mind that often, as long as he didn't have to wear them every damn day.
They decided to get out of the house and he was in his regular t-shirt and jeans combo with a jacket to hide his expandable baton and taser. He donned on a cap as well to further blend into the crowd as he followed Charlotte a few steps behind.
He still had an eye on her when she stopped by a shop window. But no sooner did he look away, she was gone. He quickened his footsteps as his eyes darted to find her, his abilities honing in on where she could have gone. He took a deep breath and followed the trail of her scent but picked up on others that were less pleasant. His jaw tightened and he followed it down to an alley where a man had just struck a woman.
Charlotte.
"Excuse me, I'll assume your parents never taught you not to harm a woman." He said. Before he knew it, two of them flew towards him with their fists, which he easily dodged before ducking and sending one over his shoulder while he struck the other's knee with the baton he retrieved from his jacket pocket. With one howling on the ground and the other scrambling to get up, Hunter went to the one who had smacked Charlotte and grabbed his hand, twisting his wrist into his back before pushing him to the ground. "Get out of here." He turned to Charlotte before slamming the guy who struck Charlotte into the ground again.
He was pulled away by the first guy he attacked and his head was slammed against the wall. He saw stars as he tried to regain his composure. Gripping his baton, he raised his hand and dealt a blow to the back of the guy's head and he fell to the ground in a heap. The other one was still trying to get up but Hunter had used enough force on his knee that it was proving to be difficult for the guy.
His hand went to the back of his head where it had struck the wall and he groaned when he felt the wetness when he pulled away. He pushed away from the wall and went to the guy that had struck Charlotte, turning him over. He searched the guy's pocket and found his wallet, taking his ID out and pocketing it before taking off in the direction Charlotte had run off to.
But it seems she got me twisted

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte was just about to yell as loud as she could, but before she did, she heard the voice that she was looking for. She sagged with relief for a brief moment, but the man in front of her had a tighter grip as his guys were taken down. She cringed away from the fight and the moment the grip on her loosened and Hunter told her to run, she did.
She didn't stop for a while, not until she was in familiar territory. Her eyes darted around quickly, both looking for other attackers and also hoping for Hunter to come into view sooner rather than later. While she knew it was his job that he was doing, she couldn't help but worry that he'd gotten hurt and wasn't going to come back. With that thought fresh in her mind, she slipped her cellphone out with shaking fingers, but she couldn't think of who to call first.
Tears started filling her eyes and she was rendered more or less useless because she couldn't see through them, her fingers shaking making it all that much worse. She slid to the ground, finally breaking down from what happened. When her eyes lifted again and she was sure that she spotted him running towards her.

Bid farewell to yesterday
It took him a while before he found Charlotte and the relief he felt spurred him on as he made his way over to her. His eyes scanned her body for any bruising and found damage to her lip and cheek. Her arms also had some discolouration from where the man had gripped her but nothing internal, he didn't think.
"Let's go home, Charlotte." He said as he wrapped an arm around her, wiping his bloodied hand on his t-shirt before gripping her hand to help her up. "Can you walk?" He asked, looking down at her, concern clear on his face.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
She felt like she was vibrating as he helped her up. Her whole body was shaking and she didn't know how she was breathing. It felt heavy and unnatural with each breath. If he hadn't been holding her steady, she knew she wouldn't have gotten up on her own. It was the first time that she'd had anything like that happen to her and it was putting into perspective why her brother was adamant on her having a bodyguard. She hated to admit it, but now she knew she needed Hunter.
Charlotte wasn't proud of her reaction, but she immediately turned into him and covered her face as tears started streaming down. She couldn't move yet, as she was consumed by how terrified she was at the reality that someone could have killed her parents. If it wasn't an accident that meant that her brother was just as much in danger as she was. And he wouldn't even talk to her.
After a moment, she worked on composing herself and she nodded against his chest before she stepped back. Her legs were still shaky, but she could walk. Her eyes lifted to his and she thought about the blood that had been on his hand, "Wait, a-are y-you okay?"

As she started to cry, Hunter's first reaction was to freeze but his arm was still around her and it didn't take long for him to tighten his hold on her, propping her up. He didn't now how long she cried but it was long enough for him to realise that his head was still spinning. He still didn't know how much damage he had incurred but he knew he needed to find someone who could give him medical attention.
When she finally stepped away, her question made him force a smile on his face. "I'm fine. We need to go before those men find us. Let's go to the main street." He whipped his phone out and dialled the driver's number to pick him up at their location.
"Did they say anything to you? Did they know who you were?"

I wish I was in love
The urgency to his tone made her feel anything but safe. It made her realize that they weren't yet. Charlotte nodded and followed him as he started heading towards the main road that she had been led away from initially. Her eyes continued to dart around and she only occasionally risked glances up at him. She didn't believe that he was actually okay, the smile he'd given was all wrong.
In response to his question, she shivered and nodded. The way the man's voice curled around her name, it made her want to puke. He didn't seem like a mastermind by any means, but there was something off about him. She shivered again and shook her head to clear the thought from her mind.
When she saw the car, she hurried her legs faster and Ian opened the door for both of them to get in. Charlotte slipped in without hesitation and waited to hear the exchange between both men.

Her confirmation made his grip around her tighten. There was no way it was a coincidence that she got attacked today. They walked out on to the main street and found the car easing its way to the curb.
He helped her in and got in as well. "You need to go to the hospital?" The driver asked when he got in, pointing to the blood that was drying on his neck. "I'll take care of this at the house." He patted the driver's shoulder and avoided leaning back.
The drive back to the house was silent and Hunter almost slipped into sleep once or twice. He might actually need a doctor but he had to make sure Charlotte was home safe and he had to talk to Sergeant Major West about the ID he had on him.
"I need to report this to my superior. Will you be okay here?"

Charlotte frowned at his response to Ian's question. He'd lied when he said he was okay and she didn't like that a bit. She remained quiet, her eyes staying fixated out the window for most of the trip home. However, she did occasionally glance on him to make sure that his head injury didn't get worse.
Once they reached her home, she knew that he wasn't coming in with her. She turned to him and her eyes searched his face for any signs of pain or anything that she could find. Her eyebrows pulled together and she nodded slowly. With her hand on the handle, she glanced back at him before getting out, "Get your head looked at. Can't do your job if you've got internal brain bleeding, yeah?"
Without waiting for his answer, she got out of the car and shut it behind her. Upon entering her house, she made it all the way up to her bedroom before she broke down again.

He chuckled at her response before nodding. When she was out, he tapped the driver and asked him to drive him to a nearby specialist clinic. He got the driver to talk to him the whole time and when they finally arrived at the clinic, Hunter told him to go back and look out for Charlotte.
He was directed to the back room immediately upon entering and after getting scanned, poked and prodded, Hunter was given a clean bill of health and sent on his merry way. The checkup immediately alerted his superior who came down to the clinic, just like he intended where he gave her the ID, told her what he thought, and asked her to keep it from Will. She agreed without question and took the ID.
She asked whether he was okay and if he needed a day off, which he refused. Now more than ever, he was insistent on making sure Charlotte was guarded. They went back to the house together and he went straight to her room. He was hesitant in breaking protocol but this turn of events called for it.
He knocked on her door and waited for a response.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
It took her a while before she could stop crying, much longer than she'd expected. And when she finally did calm down, she could feel how swollen her eyes were. She needed to kill time while she was alone. Although she knew she wasn't actually alone.
Her mind was reeling from the events, so she did what she could to silence her thoughts. She took a long shower, which only ended up with her sitting in the bathtub while the water cascaded down on her. She couldn't really wrap her head around the danger that they were in. More so, she couldn't wrap her head around the fact that Will hadn't approached her about it, not really. All he'd done was delegate. He didn't want to tell her himself, so he hired a bodyguard to get the message across. After about an hour in the shower, she finally turned the water off and got out. She remained in a towel in the bathroom for a little while longer until she finally got too cold to stand it in which case she slid out of her room and went into her brothers to grab a sweatshirt and sweatpants from his dresser.
When she was dressed in his clothes, she sat on her bed and plucked the framed picture beside her bed of the four of them. Charlotte stared at it, pulling the hoody up around her nose so that she could breathe in the familiar scent of her older brother. Her eyes were dry, but she was still shaking. When she heard a knock on her door, she wondered if Ian was checking up on her. She set the picture down on her bed and walked to the door. She took a deep breath and opened it, looking up at her bodyguard, "I'd ask if you were okay, but you'd probably just lie to me again, huh?" Her eyes dropped and she moved back into her bedroom, taking a seat on the edge of her bed. "I know I'm the priority, but I don't want you to do that again. We had time to take you to the hospital before I came home."

Hunter looked at Charlotte as she opened the door. Her greeting caused him to frown but he didn't say anything as he walked in, keeping the door open slightly.
"I'm fine. Clean bill of health." He responded, which probably didn't even come close to comforting the young woman. He hadn't expected her to be this affected by his injury.
"We needed you to be secure first, Charlotte. You have to understand that." He said after a while. "I've taken worst blows and survived, a little headache isn't going to get in my way."
He cleared his throat. "I made sure this didn't get to Will." Hunter added.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
She chewed on her lower lip and picked at the comforter on her bed while he answered. She was glad to know that he was fine, but it didn't change the fact that he had covered it up just so that she wouldn't insist on him going to the hospital first. For all the bad rap she had, she cared about other people more than she was given credit for. And she could tell that he hadn't expected her to pay any mind to his injury.
Charlotte nodded at his last statement and she instinctively pulled the sweatshirt tighter around herself. "Thing is, you may have had worse hits, but it was a head injury, Hunter. Head injuries lead to pretty bad stuff if not treated. I've had a hard enough time adjusting to you following me around," She lifted her eyes up, "What makes you think I can tolerate someone else?" Her lips tilted up at the side to play it off like a joke, but she was serious. They had an understanding of each other, she didn't want to have to go through it again with someone else.
"How do you think they knew who I was? I don't even go out that much..."

Hunter cast his eyes downward along with his head as he listened to her mini rant which ended in an attempt at a joke. He could hear the subtle difference in her voice despite it, however, and he sighed to himself. The young woman cared too much about a non-entity such as himself.
Her question had him wincing and he looked up at her, clearing his throat. He didn't know what to say and what not to say in this case so he kept it vague. "Your family has been in the news for a while. They might have thought they could make a quick buck off you." Which technically wasn't a lie but until his superior got back to him about how serious the situation was, he had to keep telling her half truths.
"How are you holding up?" He asked after a while.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte didn't like the way he never gave her anything more than she needed to know. And even then he held back. She was young, sure, but what would things have been like if she were the only child? All of the burdens Will had would have fallen on her. Would they still have treated her like she was a child? It didn't matter who it was, she was handled with kid gloves every day of her life. Like she was incapable of handling her own reality.
Her jaw clenched the tiniest bit at how vague he was, but she knew that there couldn't have been much concrete information yet. She also wasn't dense enough to believe that he'd tell her when there was. It was his job to protect her, not to keep her updated on her attackers and how they came to notice her. Why should she be aware of a thing like that? It was only her life. Charlotte remained quiet, moving back on her bed so that she could pull her knees up to her chest. The circumstances she found herself in weren't fair, but she had so little say in what happened while she lived under her brother's roof.
When he spoke again, she didn't look at him. His question wasn't easy to answer because she didn't know how she was holding up. She was still scared, her body was still reacting to the overwhelming anxiety and her mind was filled with questions that she wasn't going to get answers along with worries that she couldn't voice. So she took a page from his book and offered what she thought was a smile and said, "I'm fine."
