Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte laughed at his response and she mimicked him, rolling her eyes as well. It was sort of crazy that after the last few months she'd gotten him to make jokes so freely with her. It only led her to worry about what she was costing him by getting close, but she decided not to dwell on it until the night ended. She had all the time in the world to feel guilty about befriending him.
The crackling was heard even from where she was, but she didn't catch what was being said until he recited it back to her. The question he tacked onto the end almost brought a tear to her eye. "A man after my own heart, oh Hunter, it's like you know me or something." She grinned at him wider and stood up abruptly. After a thought, she knelt down to pick up her plate along with the forks, her hand never leaving his.
"Maybe you can have your own piece, too. That way you won't have to mooch off of mine," Charlotte snickered and started making her way back to the house, letting his hand slip out of hers once they came closer. It didn't feel right after she let go, her hand just dangling at her side, but she knew it was better to be safe.

Bid farewell to yesterday
Charlotte's dramatics was met with an indelicate snort. Her sudden movement caused him to frown in amusement before he stood up with her, shifting his hold on her hand.
He gave a hard bark of laughter at her remark. "You offered. You had another fork. You wanted to share with me. Mooch off you. The idea."
Hunter had the same idea as Charlotte as they closely approach the house but somehow when Charlotte pulled away first, a frown creased his forehead. He pocketed both his hands in his pants and walked up the stairs leading to the house. Everyone was packing up.
He held the door open for her and let her enter first.

I wish I was in love
At Hunter's protests, she erupted into giggles. Her hand tightened around his and she ran her thumb against the side of his hand. She reveled in the comfort of it for just a moment longer before she dropped it.
When he held the door open for her, she gave him a grin and jabbed him in the side with her elbow before she walked in. Her eyes traveled around the room as people were packing up the tables and clearing the linens and dishes. The cake was cut and there were a couple of pieces still plated on the table. One of the wait staff noticed her looking at it and his eyes widened, "I'm sorry, Miss Spencer, we're working on getting the cake situated and in the kitchen."
She held her hand up, "Oh no, it's okay. You can take it, I'm just claiming the last few pieces. If anyone in the kitchen wants a slice, you all can feel free to help yourselves. Would you mind clearing out the room? I just...I need a little time before you finish up." Charlotte grinned and the man smiled back, giving her a quick nod before he grabbed the rest of the cake and made his way into the kitchen with it. The rest of the staff followed suit and her posture relaxed. She continued to look around at the large space in front of her, still half-decorated with the music still filling the room. Charlotte twirled in the open space and turned back towards Hunter, "See, this music isn't so bad. It's much better than T-Swift."

He hardly blinked when she elbowed him as they entered. He could see his security team still milling about so he sent them to check the rest of the house as he gave the room a cursory glance to see if anything was out of the ordinary.
His eyes settled on Charlotte as she sent the wait staff away, leaving them both alone in the room with soft music still playing from hidden speakers. Her comment brought a smirk to his face. "Is it though?" He asked with narrowed eyes as he approached her.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte watched him curiously as his eyes darted around the room. She knew that he still had a job to do, even if he wasn't being quite as uptight as he'd been when they first met. After a moment, she also realized that there were still people he worked with lingering around. They all scattered in different directions around the same time that the wait staff emptied from the room and she breathed it in. It had been nice outside, sitting in the gardens with Hunter, but she felt more comfortable in her house where she didn't feel the cold chill in her bones.
When her eyes landed back on him, she narrowed her eyes back at him before rolling them, "Without a doubt. It's not as obnoxious and sickeningly poppy. Not really my style." She gave a firm nod and continued swaying to the tunes that surrounded them. Her eyes remained on his and she took a few steps closer to him as well. It was awful to admit, but she felt like she was being pulled towards him. As if they were magnetic. Charlotte didn't quite feel right so far away from him anymore. "Let me guess, you're more of a metal head, right?"

Hunter chuckled and shrugged. He of course wasn't going to disagree. It had been a joke after all. As she started to sway to the music, Hunter watched her, standing where he was with his will being tested so hard.
She was approaching him and he almost didn't hear her question. It just took a while for his brain to catch up and he shook his head. "The Beatles, actually. That's my genre." He forced a chuckle, still trying so hard not to close the gap between them.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
His response to her assumption made her grin wider before it fell into a grimace, "Well shoot, now I can't give you too hard of a time for that. The Beatles are timeless." Even if they were older and classic, she figured she would cut him some slack this time around.
Charlotte paused before she got to close and she wrapped her arms around her torso. Her eyes moved from his around the room and she tilted her head to the side, "It's kind of sad isn't it? Everything looks perfect when it starts out, only to be trashed and torn down hours later in much less time." She'd always hated the end of parties before her parents' death. She came down after a sort of happy high and it turned into a crash after the festivities were over.
She was beginning to feel that way with her friendship with Hunter. When they had moments like this, she felt better, like she was almost whole again. And then something happened where they had to pull back and she crashed into that same solemn, isolated mind frame.

"Damn straight." He grinned at her response. One particular song was running through his head right then and he smacked himself internally for being so damn cliche.
When she stopped walking, Hunter felt both relieved and disappointed. He hated that in between feeling. He knew it was wrong for him to want anything more than friendship with Charlotte. Hell, even the friendship came with it's complications that he shouldn't want.
Her remark made him concentrate on what she was saying instead of the inner monologue he was having. His eyes followed hers around the room and grimaced slightly. "Some guests you have." He shook his head partly in amusement. "Makes you wonder why even create something beautiful in the first place if it's going to be destroyed somehow."

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
The way they both hovered along this invisible line that wasn't allowed to be crossed was stressful. She wanted to get closer, but couldn't risk having him pull away. It would make sense, she would understand, but it wouldn't take the sting out of the rejection. There was enough rejection coming from her older brother, she couldn't stomach it from him too. It was just safer to maintain on the opposite end of the invisible line.
Charlotte had her own struggles nagging her mind, from the parallels she drew from her words to her relationship with her brother to the magnetic pull she felt towards Hunter. She had to find something to talk about as some kind of distraction. His response was harder to hear because she agreed. She wondered why William had been such a perfect brother to her before if one tragic event could completely destroy them. Instead of voicing her own thoughts, she just nodded and bit down on her lip.
The song shifted to one of her favorites and she closed her eyes, a smile creeping across her lips, "This is me and Will's song. He'd have it played at every birthday and we'd dance in the middle of the floor with everyone surrounding us." Charlotte missed the way things had been before and she found herself wondering what Hunter would have thought of her then.

Hunter looked to the side when a crackle came through his earpiece again and he sighed. "Go for Trudeau."
The person on the other end reported a safe perimeter and there were no suspicious activities so Hunter told them to stand down. They were stationed at all points around the estate and reported their whereabouts before going silent. He took the earpiece out and looked up at Charlotte as she spoke.
A small smile crossed his lips, softening his features before he reached a hand out. "I could step in for your brother." He said, being a lot braver than he should be.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte began fidgeting as he spoke to the rest of his security team. She didn't quite know what else to do, but she focused on the music and it put her at ease while she waited.
To be honest, she hadn't expected his offer, to step in for Will was sort of huge and it also terrified her a little. He was offering to cross the invisible line which was honestly all she wanted, but she had to hesitate before she could say yes. Her lips pressed together and she looked at him to gauge whether he was serious. Instead of making it as big as it was, she decided it was best to play it off. "Are you sure you can stomach dancing to my music?"
Charlotte grinned at him and took his hand, the other resting on his shoulder, "There will be no judgment about how good I am at dancing, okay? I had to learn."

He winced dramatically before answering her. "I think I can manage." He nodded before gripping her hand lightly while his other hand slid to the small of her back. Her remark about her dancing got him raising an eyebrow before chuckling.
"Yuhuh. Because obviously all I did in the army was break out my dancing shoes and boogied."
Everything he knew about dancing was from the movies he'd watched. Movie. Singular. One movie that had dancing in it. And it had been a comedy so he really wasn't sure how he was going to be able to do anything past sway to the music.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Her eyes narrowed at him and she rolled them dramatically when he agreed. Her heart started beating rapidly against her chest when he put his hand on the small of her back, bringing them closer than she'd have ever thought they'd get. The hug was one thing, brief and not quite as intimate as this was. The song wasn't long, by any means, but it was the longest that she'd be so close to him.
The joke he made about his dancing in the military made her snort and she frowned, "If that's the case, I'm entirely disappointed that you turned into such a bore by the time we met." Charlotte gave him a wide, innocent smile and squeezed his shoulder. She was starting to love his sense of humor, she realized. That he was bantering with her, it was all she'd hoped for but never expected to happen.
She was okay with the swaying, it was easy and didn't take much thought. Her nerves already had her on edge, she was pretty sure if they were actually dancing she'd have stepped on him several times. Her whole body felt like it was vibrating.

"You keep hurting my feelings, Char. It's not nice." He said, rolling his eyes at her smile. Hunter had to admit, the more time he spent with Charlotte, the less his initial opinion of her was proved wrong.
The song kept him occupied as well as the warm body he was so close to and he just kept quiet. It had been a while since he was this close to a person. It was jarring to realise that. He'd been so used to space that this was now alien to him.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
The silence between them didn't make her uncomfortable. After a while, even her nerves started to slip away and she just accepted the comfort she took from it. Charlotte had been starved of emotional connection and physical affection over the last few months and she saw now that she was getting it from the most unexpected person. It wasn't a lot, nor did she expect for it to go further than this, but it was more than she'd had from anyone else. He'd seen her fall apart several times, maintaining his strength and being her rock when she needed it. The appreciation she held for him was overwhelming.
Her hand moved up his shoulder and she rested her arm around his neck, leaning forward so that her cheek was resting against his chest. Charlotte knew that she shouldn't, but exhaustion was starting to set in. Even with as short of a time as she'd spent in the social setting, it still took a lot out of her to force an interaction with them. Now that it was over, she just wanted to sleep and recuperate. She was unwilling to say so to Hunter though, for fear of him shooing her off to bed so soon.
She just wanted a little bit longer with him like this before they went back to keeping their distance.
