All You Have Is Your Fire
don't you ever tame your demons
His lips pressed to hers and she could feel her chest expanding. It was impossible to believe that she could love anybody more than him. She didn't count her two sons because they were an extension of the love she held for her best friend. If it weren't for him, she was fairly certain she would have failed as a mother to Nicholas. He'd never agree with her, she knew that, but it was what she knew to be true. Patch had saved her from raising a child that could have been exactly like her...or like his biological father.
Layla cupped his jaw and frowned, "We both know that isn't true. My disorder could have gotten worse. I could have ruined Nicky's life. You made it easier to be a decent mom." She kissed him and sighed, "I think we both would have been worse off without each other. That's what being soulmates means, right?" If it hadn't been for Patch, she didn't think she'd have ever hoped for something like a soulmate.

it only takes a spark
to tear the world apart
She was right in thinking that he would never agree with her. He couldn't take all the credit because Layla had it in her all along to be a good mother. He may have nudged her in a direction and he knew his parents played a big role in Nicholas' upbringing, but for the most part, Layla brought him up alone.
But he accepted the kiss and sighed at her words. He liked the idea that they were exactly that. Soulmates. He'd known right from the start that that was what they were. It may have started as a friendship but they were kindred spirits just reaching out to each other. It just happened to translate to romance down the road.
"Yeah." He nodded and kissed her again. "You make me happy, woman. Simple as that."
i'll shine a light on you
