So if you're alone just watching the sky
Coming back to the States after another bout in Australia had probably been the most refreshing thing she'd done in months. Australia was becoming suffocating, though not for the reasons many may assume. She grew bored easily, perhaps because she was filled with wanderlust. Although, it never made sense to anyone why of all the places she'd end up, she chose America. If there was one thing that could keep her in a place for longer than a week, it was most definitely the one person in her family that she could actively tolerate.
Her plane had landed earlier than she expected it to, which gave her time to get her things and catch a cab to her younger cousin's humble abode. It wasn't the first time she'd dropped in on Avery and it likely wouldn't be the last if she got the itch to leave again. They'd been separated by an ocean for a good portion of their lives, visiting when possible, but never enough for Reagan's liking. Phone calls, skype and all other forms of social media tended to be the best way she could keep up on her best friend's life before she was old enough to move out and remove herself from the complexities of her home life. She'd gone off to art school, got a degree, and flew out to the States as often as she could for long periods of time to build her portfolio further. There was something about the art of photographing people that she'd fallen in love with and her main subject was the very person she always came back to.
Reagan had packed lightly, she wasn't one to hold onto much as it was given that she left more than she stayed. With a duffle bag and her camera set-up she made her way up the stairs to the familiar door. Adjusting her things, she figured she could do the polite thing and knock, although she knew where the spare key was always hidden and was well aware that she was able to just walk in without needing to announce herself. Best not to scare the younger girl though. So she knocked lightly and shifted her weight, hoping that she'd seen Avery's car in the lot, although, she couldn't quite be sure. It had been over a year since she last visited.

Avery was a creature of habit. She liked her comfort zones with the occasional stepping out of them but comfort zones were called that for a reason. It made her comfortable. Her cousin coming over always changed that. She supposed her older cousin being around was always the reason for Avery to grow up and she did appreciate the gesture but still, she was a creature of habit.
Which was why she still stayed in the same apartment after her parents' death, she still had her father's car parked in the same spot, she still had the same six bed sheets she rotated every month. Even her closet still held the same clothes she'd had since she stopped growing at sixteen.
Even the spare key hadn't left the same spot in a slot behind her mailbox by the door. Although she really did have to change it for security purposes. One day.
It was twelve in the afternoon and she was cooking her lunch when she heard the knock on the door. She lowered the heat on the stove so the food simmered in the pan before she answered the door. The sight of her older cousin had Avery beaming before she launched herself on to Reagan, wrapping her legs and arms around her and squeezing.
"You're here! I can't believe you're here!" She pulled away after a while and took her cousin in. "Why are you here?" She asked, the smile on her face still intact.

So if you're alone just watching the sky
Reagan had been doing her best to keep as close of an eye on her younger cousin as she could. Given the death of her uncle and aunt, she'd tried more frequently to either visit or drag Avery out of her bubble to visit her neck of the woods. It was difficult for the both of them when Avery's parents died. They'd been closer to parents to the older girl than her own and once they were gone, Reagan no longer had a foundation to look upon and dream about. She was an artist, a romantic at heart, but there was nothing about her parents that led to that life. They were separated now, both with their designated SO and Reagan was still trying to figure out where she'd ever fit in with that lot. While Avery's family wasn't openly gushing about their love for each other, it felt far more familial than her own situation where she was often neglected by both parents even if she was in the same room.
She'd always assumed that her own gushing came from the lack of affection between her parents and her. However, she realized that the only real gushing that happened was with her baby cousin. As soon as Avery had the door open, Reagan had dropped her bags and caught the younger girl in her arms, squeezing tight as she was koala-ed. She never felt more loved than when she was back in the States with Avery. They did practically everything together and talked for hours at a time about any details that might have been missed in their time apart.
After setting the younger girl down, Reagan gave her a sloppy kiss on the cheek and smiled brightly, "I'm here! I'd have given more warning, but you know me. I love surprises and being attacked without hesitation." Reagan pulled Avery in for another hug and sighed dramatically, "Gawd I missed you!" Once she released her cousin again, she hefted her duffle bag up on her shoulder and grabbed her camera case as well, "You know, just making my annual visit. Australia was becoming stifling and fucking awful. Nicole and Thomas are driving me bonkers and their SOs are dull. Couldn't find a reason to stay, so I figured I'd go somewhere that I feel wanted."

Avery giggled at the kiss, squirming away from Reagan only to be pulled back into another hug. "Me too!" She responded just as dramatically. It was only with Reagan that Avery felt she could be this animated without feeling like being judged. She yanked Reagan inside and closed the door behind them, rushing over to the kitchen while still keeping the conversation two sided.
"You're definitely wanted here." She responded as she stirred the contents of the pot before switching off the heat and pouring the soup into the hollowed out bread, dumping a boat load of shredded cheese on top and sliding it into the oven. She set the timer and went out to where she had left Reagan and beamed at her.
"How long are you here for then?" Avery asked with her hands on her hips. It was always good to have Reagan around so whenever the other girl, who was more like a sister than a cousin, was in town, Avery wanted her to be around for a while.

So if you're alone just watching the sky
Following her cousin into the apartment, Reagan set her things down in the main living space and twirled around, looking to see if anything had changed while she was away. It all seemed exactly the same, which she supposed didn't surprise her much. Avery didn't like change, not the way that Reagan did and it made sense given that she'd grown up in a home that was at least mostly functional. Reagan's home life seemed normal to outsiders, but it was only now starting to become bearable. And that was only because she chose when she came and went.
Her eyes moved to where the voice came from and she smiled. The confirmation that she was welcomed in her cousin's home warmed her heart. If there was anything she had to thank her parents for, it was being related to Avery's parents and giving them a chance to be in each other's lives. Reagan was a social person, she made friends quickly, but nothing below the surface. The only person she trusted with her deepest, darkest thoughts was Avery and that was because they'd grown up together in the midst of their hellish lives.
Mirroring the stance from her cousin, she shifted her weight back and forth a few times, "Haven't quite decided yet. You know, wherever the wind blows me and all that. I need to put my name out there for hire so that I can make some side cash, but I've got a gig that I think will make me some bank. It's just a matter of reaching the right clientele." She flashed Avery a grin and plopped down on the couch, "Enough about me though. Tell me whatever I've missed since the last time we talked. The plane ride was long and I must have missed out on something. Boys? Girls? Work? School? Give it to me, babe. I gotta know the deets."

Avery narrowed her eyes as she tried to read between the lines of what Reagan was saying. The first part she understood. She knew where Reagan's passions lie. Her cousin was talented beyond words and her photos were a thing of beauty. But the next part was what stumped Avery but she didn't have time to dwell on it before details were asked of her about what Avery had been up to.
She could tell Reagan about the coaching position at the local ice skating rink. After she busted her knee a few years ago, just before the 2014 Winter Olympics, Avery was out of contention. She could still skate, but she could no longer compete. Now that she thought about it, a lot happened four years ago and she was just glad it didn't bring her down too much because not long after she got out of surgery, her parents were involved in a hit and run.
Snapping out of those thoughts, Avery quickly gave a small laugh to hide that she spaced out. "School is great, I'm on top of things, thank God. Sports medicine is no joke so like I'm glad it's not killing me." She laughed. "No boys, no girls and work is dull. But the pay is good. It pays the bills. And my recent obsession with cooking." She remarked when the room began to smell like fresh bread. She took a deep breath in and let it out slowly. "I have class for like two hours tonight but after that, we should go out for drinks, yeah?"

She supposed that it was unsurprising that Avery didn't have a girlfriend or a boyfriend and that she was working somewhere that wasn't quite fitted to her yet. Her cousin was still young, she had so much time to figure things out and she liked being safe. Who could blame her? Reagan had never been the safe type. Playing it safe meant an unhappy marriage filled with resentment and wasted time. She couldn't afford to live a safe life because she didn't want to always be stuck the way her parents had been. Maybe that was why she forced herself into outrageous situations.
"Paying the bills is important, of course. Sports medicine sounds...super interesting," She nodded slowly, although she was clearly full of it. Avery was all brains and beauty. Reagan just accepted that she was mostly beauty and the occasional good time. "I do think we need to change the no boys or girls thing though. I mean, seriously, babe, you're a catch. It's hardly fair to keep that from the world." Reagan had never really been one to keep anything from the world.
She grinned and nodded, "Yes, drinks, sounds like my cup of tea. Or rather vodka. Either way, I'm way in. Gives me time to get settled too while you're gone."
