All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
Over the course of the last few months, Adrian had managed to find her way back home, where she belonged, where her friends were, where her job was. It had been a difficult move, something that she dragged her feet on for weeks leading up to it, but once she dove in, she found herself completely engulfed in the whir of life that she'd left behind for far too long. Her boss had been understanding, as shocking as it was, and attempted to ease her back into gigs. It didn't take long before Adrian upheaved that idea and insisted on booking as many shoots as she could. School had been left in the dust and after decidedly dropping the new semester, she thought it best to make money, save up and go back when she was in the right mindset for it.
In her time back, with her schedule packed full of work, she hadn't had time for anyone else. Any free time she had was spent sleeping or rearranging furniture because she was restless. Any text messages, phone calls, DMs, emails she received, unless immediately important, were left ignored. She didn't have time for the sympathy, she didn't want to catch up and cry over the happenings of her life. She just wanted to stay busy, make money, and keep her head above water. That had also led to her ignoring any and all male attention, curving guys who relentlessly thought they could score by assuring her that they weren't just interested in a blow n' go. They hadn't realized though that it was all she had time for. Thoughts of Dylan had remained carefully put away into a safe spot in the far back of her mind, a topic she didn't dare breach as she tried to get her life on track.
His presence had thrown her for a loop, knocked her off her feet and took her away from what she was meant to be doing. The death of her mother was just the realization she'd needed. She didn't have time to miss him, she dosed herself with NyQuil every night so that she couldn't long for his arms around her when she slept. Dylan had become an afterthought, or at least, that was what she'd been trying to tell herself as long as she could manage.
Adrian was running late for a meeting with her agent, having slept through five alarms because her NyQuil dose had been taken a little later than recommended. Scattering to get out of the house, she hadn't expected anyone to show up and halt the process further. She'd just placed her hand on the doorknob when there was a knock and that voice on the other side. With a squeak she pulled her hand from the door quickly, as if it had burned her and took a step back.
Isn't she a dream come true?

imma say all the words inside my head
Don't you tell me what you think that I could be
Cassidy was in her last trimester and had been staying home more often instead of at her boyfriend's place, which filled Dylan with both hope and trepidation. Hope because he could be more involved in his baby sister's life now but trepidation because he could no longer hide behind distance when it came to his treatment of her.
He was slowly becoming less of a dick, accompanying her to doctor's appointments when her boyfriend had to go on some type of trip or something. He was also making sure she went to her birthing classes, scheduled maids when he had to go to work and even making sure Cassidy actually went out of the house for a walk, just to stay active. He was beginning to learn her quirks and personality that he had missed over his own stupidity through the years and frankly, he regretted not knowing just how smart and hilarious though a little too sassy his baby sister actually was.
Though his family life was improving and Cassidy was positively glowing, Dylan still felt the missing piece of the puzzle and he knew Cassidy was feeling it too. He still hadn't told her about his feelings towards her best friend and if he were being honest, he didn't know if he ever should. They hadn't spoken in months and he was so sure she was over him. He, unfortunately, couldn't get over her as easily. He still held out hope that someday she'll come back, realise she had feelings for him, and they could pick up where they left off.
Turned out she had come back. A few of his contacts who had contacts working in Adrian's industry had spotted her around town. Dylan thought she would have at least contacted Cassidy but he hadn't heard her talk about her best friend at all.
It was then that he decided it was enough. He could understand her not contacting him but she had to know Cassidy was about to give birth. Couldn't she at least be there for the younger woman? His sudden overprotective brother bit came as a bit of a surprise. But he used it to fuel the drive over to the apartment she had before she went to Amelia's aid.
Dylan hesitated at the door but only for a minute before he knocked on it. "Adrianna, open up." He called out, knocking again for good measure. He heard movement and looked down to see shadows moving. His tone softened and he knocked again. "Adrian...please open up."

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
Nope, nope, nope. She wasn't making any movement to open the door that separated her from the man that she had fallen hopelessly and stupidly in love with when her mother was on her deathbed. Not a chance in hell. He could stand out there all day if he wanted to, she'd find some other way to her appointment. Or maybe she could reschedule? Where was her phone? Her eyes searched over her shoulder and she realized that her phone was in her hand still. Shit. No, she wasn't going to let him do this right now.
With a steely resolve, Adrian opened the door to face him, eyes glazed over like she hardly saw him, jaw set. Except, she did see him and everything inside her melted. All of her internal organs were meshing together into a gloopy mess and she just wanted to collapse into him again. But she didn't. Her arms folded across her chest stubbornly and she lifted her chin, "What do you want, Dylan? I have an appointment to get to and I'm already late."
He looked good, she'd admit only in her mind. Just the same as he had when his arms wrapped around her every night so she could get some sleep. Just the same as when he held her hand at the hospital or when he pulled her out of the tub to save her life. She missed him with every fiber of her being, but she wasn't about to let him know that. "Either out with the words, or schedule an appointment with me when I have actual time for this."
Isn't she a dream come true?

For a brief moment, Dylan thought he saw Adrian's eyes soften, but that could have just been his unwavering hope to get Adrian back. Because when he blinked, her eyes grew cold and distant and he couldn't help but look away.
He recognised her behaviour too well. She was him twenty years ago when he lost his mother. The anger was potent and he knew exactly why she didn't want to have anyone around her. But because he was aware, he couldn't let her go down this road alone. He didn't know how to reach her because people tried with him and got nowhere.
"Cas is in her last trimester, Adrian. She needs you. I know this sounds selfish and I know you don't have time for thi but she can't do this on her own. She needs her best friend." Admittedly, it was a low blow, playing the best friend card. But he wasn't about to be stupid and use himself needing her as a bargaining chip. She clearly wanted nothing to do with him. He had to take a step back from this. She didn't love him the way he loved her.
Had this been even a year ago, he would have scoffed at the idea of him backing off from something he wanted. Something he needed. Time and circumstance changed so much in him.
He supposed he could call it karma. For all the fucked up shit he had thrown out into the world with his sleeping around and screwing his sister over and making a mockery of his last name whenever he saw the opportunity. Adrian was his wake up call. She was also unfortunately his downfall it seemed.
"I don't want you to be late. I just wanted you to know that...Cas needs you." He took a deep breath and turned to leave. There didn't seem to be anything else he could do or say.

All The Boys

Adrian wasn't sure what she expected for him to lead with. Maybe that he missed her or that she wasn't acting herself and that she needed help. What she hadn't been expecting was for him to use his sister against her. Of course she knew that Cassidy was pregnant and of course she wanted to be there for the younger girl. It had devastated her when she pulled back and in turn felt like she lost her best friend, but she couldn't bring this around Cas. It wasn't fair. She had one shithead to deal with, she didn't need two.
"Well fuck you very much for throwing that in my face. You think I don't know that she's about to have that baby? Tell me, Dyl, in what way does it seem like a good idea to have me around her at this point?" Anger was all that could fuel her with this, keep her from falling back into that pattern of needing someone. She didn't need anyone anymore. She was doing fine on her own. But that didn't mean she didn't still love them. Or miss them. She did every single day. "I haven't been myself for months and she already has one too many fuck faces who don't know how to handle themselves in her life. I'm not about to add another."
Her hands reached up to run through her hair. She should have just escaped out the window. It would have been easier than this. "And what the fuck happened to you anyway? Quit being spineless and tell me how pissed you are about all that happened. You're playing the Cas card so fucking hard, but what about you Dylan? Or was it one of those things that when you saw how broken I was, you realized that you were the one that didn't have the time?" Okay, she was being mean now, throwing insults at his back while he retreated, but she couldn't stop the words from coming out. She'd been biting back all of her emotions for so long and hadn't had anyone to hurl accusations at except herself.
He was the perfect target because he wasn't saying anything back.

imma say all the words inside my head
Don't you tell me what you think that I could be
Dylan stopped moving when Adrian spoke up. His heart clenched at her words. True as they were, it shoved daggers in him. At least she was lashing out on him and not his sister. Small miracles.
Getting called out this way had him so tired all of a sudden but it did make him turn. "Pulling you out of that tub was not a picnic in the park. Getting insulted and then being told to my face that you'd rather have been left in that tub was icing on the cake. You want me to get pissed? I don't have it in me anymore, Adrian. Seeing you in the hospital broke me. But I realise that that wasn't about me.
"You forget that I know how you feel. That hopelessness you feel, the lashing out you want to do because you want people hurting as much as you do, I know that feeling. All I wanted was for you to realise that you didn't have to do it alone. I fucked up with Cas but I know enough not to with you. You helped me get better. You made me want to not screw up but I get why you're pushing us away. I want to respect that. But Cas doesn't deserve it."
He took a deep breath and rubbed his stubbled jaw. "You live your life the way you want to, Adrian. Fill that void with work. But don't forget that while you might think you're not good enough to be around people you say you love, we'd rather have you around than..." he sighed as his words trailed. He shook his head and gave out a mirthless chuckle.
"Even a text will ease her anxieties. If you could just tell her she's gonna do fine..."

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
That steely resolve she started with began to falter with each word he tossed back at her. She'd asked for it, wondered why he wouldn't just lay into her the way she was used to. At least if he had been pissed she could have used that to fuel this idea that she couldn't be with him. After all, she'd ruined him, just as he said, when she tried to kill herself. The tub had been the final nail in their relationship's coffin and it was easier to pretend that she didn't care than it was to admit to him that she just wanted to go back.
Every single night since they split, she'd thought back to all of the good things that they had. All of the dinners he spent with her and her mom, the times that he held her hand when she couldn't stop shaking and when he kissed her just to cause a distraction. God how she missed that. But being with him now was a cruel joke. She couldn't hurt him every single day when she could barely stand to look at herself in the mirror and face what she'd become. Until she sorted herself out, it was better to just stay away and be angry.
Her eyes dropped and she wrapped her arms around her torso, trying to ignore the way he lumped himself in with his sister when he spoke of the people she loved. He could do so much better than her - whether she'd helped him out of his own funk or not, she was spiraling and he needed to have better. "Dylan...I..." She trailed off and shook her head. What was she even going to say? That she wanted him so bad that it physically hurt? That she loved him? And missed him? It wasn't going to fix anything, it wasn't going to change anything. They were still wrong for each other. "I'll call her tonight, okay?" Her eyes lifted up to his, "Assuming she takes the call after the way I've been. And I'll try to smooth things over, make her feel better as much as I can."
Isn't she a dream come true?

Pursing his lips, he looked up when she called out his name. It seemed as though the fire that burned before was extinguished and in its place was someone who wanted to say so many things. Things that went beyond promising him that she would call his baby sister who needed her best friend more than anything now.
"She's been waiting for your call. You can't do anything to her that she won't forgive." He responded, wanting to add that he felt the same way but this couldn't be about him. Not anymore. She made her stance clear. He wasn't going to pursue this anymore. Not until he knew for certain that she had a change of heart. Which, if he was being honest with himself, didn't seem likely.
"Thank you, Adrian. I appreciate this. I hope you feel better soon. And uh...hope you're not late for your meeting." He gave her a small smile before turning to go. He tried not to turn around again because he didn't trust himself to look at her anymore.
