Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
The drive home from the airport had been a mix between too long and completely content. Having ditched her driver was probably the best decision she made because she got to ride without the awkward third-wheel attached to her. Hunter opted to drive, and while she wanted to argue because he'd only just made it home, she conceded to his request, knowing that it meant she'd get to hold his hand and stare at him the whole way back home. During the short trip, she couldn't have taken enough time to appreciate his one hand enough. Her fingers traced over the lines of his palm, memorizing each. They brushed over his wrist and danced along the veins of his forearm. Sort of silly, she thought, that someone's arm could mean so much to her given that she'd been without it for nearly a year.
Pulling into the driveway of her home, she got a strange sense of deja vu with him beside her, though a lot had changed since their first rendezvous. For one thing, she didn't altogether want to get as far away from him as possible, instead she felt extremely clingy, both of her arms wrapped around his one as he led her towards the door. No longer did she have to worry about people seeing them sharing an affectionate moment or standing too close to one another. Instead, she freely looked at him with adoring eyes and a wide smile, taking in all of his features as if she was only seeing them for the first time and hadn't already committed them to memory. Funny, for as much as she'd studied him in their time together, she managed to miss certain nuances in their time apart.
Charlotte didn't waste any time pulling him through the house and off to her bedroom, dismissing those who stood around the door ominously. The two men exchanged looks before stepping away from their posts and she kicked her door shut behind her, "I know, I know, I shouldn't just be shooing people away, but you look so tired and I don't want them hovering out there all dark and broody. It will just raise my anxiety and I'd rather have you to myself entirely. Even if it means just letting you rest." Lottie sat on the edge of her bed and fluttered her lashes up at him, hoping that she'd get spared the lecture of not taking her security detail very seriously. Though, in fairness, she could argue that it was no different than before. This time, she just wasn't falling hopelessly in love with one of them.
But I don't wanna cause any pain

so here i go
Bid farewell to yesterday
It still felt surreal, having someone other than his baby sister to come home to. This deployment took even longer than before and missing Charlotte had been absolutely unbearable this time around. Especially since Damian got to go home first.
When he finally had Charlotte in his arms, he didn't say anything when she clung on to him. He pretty much relinquished all rights to his arm to her. They were quiet throughout the journey to her place but it was the kind of quiet that was needed and peaceful. Then again, they were at their best when they were this quiet. They were both already so selfish with their words because words actually meant something to them.
He was glad when they reached her home and they were alone in her room. He didn't even spare a thought at her dismissal of the security detail. He wanted her to himself and that had to mean privacy. When Charlotte broke their silence, all Hunter did was smile before moving up behind and unfurling his long legs on either side of hers, pulling her close.
Hunter buried his face in her hair, breathing her in. "I rested enough on the plane. I want my girlfriend beside me. Not to sound like a complete creeper but I just want to stare at my girlfriend until my eyes cross." He murmured with a chuckle, pressing his lips against her shoulder, trailing kisses up the side of her neck.
Oh sweet ignition be my fuse

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
It was so easy to melt into Hunter when he slid in behind her. Like every part of her body unclenched as soon as he was within reach. He pulled her in closer, lips against her skin and she closed her eyes to revel in the feeling. Nine months had felt like forever; more so when she worried that something could go wrong at any given moment. She'd been an anxious mess throughout the entire thing, relying heavily on the few people she had around her that would understand.
Her head fell back against his shoulder and she wrapped his arms tighter around herself, fingers tracing patterns against his skin. She turned her head to kiss his temple and smiled, "So did you miss me a little bit?" Sure, she was fishing, but she hadn't gotten enough of him for months. Any little bit of reassurance she could pull from him was something that would prepare her for the next deployment. And the one after that. Her stomach twisted and she shook the thought from her head. He was home, he was safe, he was finally with her.
"I think I'd still adore you even with your eyes crossed. You'd look a little silly, and I would probably never be able to take you seriously, but I'd still find you to be absolutely studly," Charlotte teased. She was going to take full advantage of the time he was awake, fill it with as much laughter and smiles and kisses and love as she was capable of. Her hand reached up to thread through his hair and she grinned even wider than before, "You look like one of those crazy mountain men."
But I don't wanna cause any pain

Bid farewell to yesterday
Her question had him laughing against her skin before he dropped his forehead on her shoulder. He took a beat before responding. She deserved to know how much he thought of her during his absence here.
He took out the picture he had taken of her a few months before his deployment from his breast pocket. It was a little wrinkled and curled around the edges from all the times he'd take it out of his pocket to look at and kiss every morning and night. His bunkmates teased him to the point where they would actually remind him if he forgot his little ritual.
Holding it out for her to see, Hunter placed a kiss on her shoulder before explaining. "For 253 days, I'd wake up, take this out of my jacket pocket and remind myself that I have you to come back to. So no, I didn't miss you a little bit." He squeezed her and sighed softly. "You were with me the entire time."
He laughed at her remark about being cross eyed and then about his shagginess. He honestly couldn't be bothered to do anything about his hair during his deployment but now that he was back, maybe he could trim it a little. If his girlfriend wanted him shaved, he'd shave.
"You don't like crazy mountain men? You don't find them extremely attractive?" he teased as he rubbed his cheek against hers.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte's hand wrapped around his wrist as she looked at the picture he held in his hand. It surprised her that it was of her, but then, she figured she shouldn't have been surprised at all. Her cheeks started to burn and she couldn't keep from grinning. It was similar to what she had, maybe not a picture, but his clothes. Two hundred days was a long time to go without someone and she'd come to learn that nobody smelled as good as the person you love. Before he left, she'd raided his closet for things she could use; t-shirts, button-ups, hoodies. When one lost it's scent, she replaced it with something else. When she ran out of articles of clothing altogether, she weirdly bought the scent of deodorant he wore and would rub it on her hand before she slept.
Little things to get her through the time apart from him.
"I've got a whole lot of your laundry folded up and ready to go back to your place," She laughed sheepishly and pressed her lips to his cheek. "I bet Damian gave you a hard time about that picture, huh? Probably expected it to be a nudey one or something." Charlotte certainly wouldn't have put it past Lena to let Damian take one of her for safe-keeping while he was deployed. They had such a weird dynamic.
His cheek rubbed up against hers and she snorted a laugh. It was scratchy, but not altogether unpleasant. If she were going to be honest, she'd have found him extremely attractive no matter what. Charlotte scrunched up her nose and ran her fingers through his scruff, "I mean, you're pretty much the sexiest crazy mountain man I've ever seen. But you could use a little bit of a trim, some taming for the wildness. I don't mind it too much though." It certainly wasn't going to keep her from kissing him as much as she could.

Hearing Charlotte's way of coping with his absence warmed his heart. It also made him concerned how needy they were for each other. Which amused him slightly. Either way, he wasn't ready to let go of her just yet and he was glad she felt the same way.
"Fortunately, I got a reprieve from that half way through serving. He left for an emergency back home. Still need to call him but that can wait." He nuzzled her neck before snorting at the crassness of his best friend and his not love. There was no denying how perfect Damien and Lena were for each other, dysfunctional horndogs as they were.
"Why thank you," he responded in a smug tone at her calling him the sexiest. "I'll do that later for sure. Maybe you could help me."
He then leaned forward slightly to slip an arm under her knees, gripping her waist tight before standing up and turning towards the bed. He gently dropped her back in bed and climbed on top of her before placing a soft and long kiss on her lips, running his fingers through her hair. "I've missed you, babygirl."

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Hearing that Damian had been sent back home early made her stomach twist and she turned to look at him with worry in her eyes. He seemed completely calm over it which meant that Damian had probably seemed calm. Surely he wouldn't have waited long if it was something that called for immediate attention or comforting for his friend. Charlotte had come to be very fond of Hunter's best friend, weird and crass as he was, he was straightforward and kind of hilarious.
Char grinned and rolled her eyes at his smugness, but was more than happy to help. Her fingers continued to stroke through his scruff, checking out how even it was on the sides and how much he should trim off. Plus she liked being well-acquainted with his face in general, rubbing her nose against his with a smile before he slipped his arms under her knees. Her arms wrapped around his neck as he picked her up and she giggled, "What are you up to?"
He plopped her down and climbed on top of her, nestling his body over hers carefully. Charlotte's fingers locked around the back of his neck and she melted against his kiss, a pout puckering on her lips when he pulled away, only to ease into a wide smile at his words. "Say it again. Pretty please?" She could hear him say just about anything and she was pretty sure it would result in her forming a puddle beneath him. How was he this gorgeous? Her former babysitter.

"It's fine. He's fine." Hunter responded soothingly when Charlotte turned to look at him with worry in her eyes. If something did happen, Lena would have called. He trusted both of them to let him know if anything was wrong. It was so sweet of Charlotte to be so concerned over his own best friend. He placed a quick kiss on her lips as a thanks.
He liked her fingers through his scruff, it was really nice. But as nice as it was, he had other things in mind to do.
Her request was met with a grin as he started to kiss her forehead, then her nose and then her lips, punctuating them with the words she had asked him to repeat. He continued to press his lips down her skin, repeating the words over and over again so her skin could be acquainted with how much he had missed her.
Somewhere down her stomach, one word changed. It slipped out so casually but he knew he meant it the moment it came out. "I love you."

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte's face tingled where his lips left their mark and she couldn't stop the smile that spread across her face. His breath was warm against her skin and she shivered at the feeling of it brushing over her neck and her collarbone, down her sternum to her stomach. He repeated the words over and over again and while she had been content after the first repetition, she couldn't deny that the words caused her heart and stomach to flutter in unison.
Her fingers threaded through his hair as he placed careful kisses on her stomach, but she froze when the words he said changed without warning. They didn't sound hesitant, or like he hadn't meant to say them, but she was stunned all the same. Of course she'd loved him for much longer than his deployment, but the feelings had grown exponentially in his absence. She found herself listing all the reasons she loved him in her mind while she was trying not to cry because she missed him. It had done some good, but ultimately made it more difficult to keep the words to herself. It was bad enough that she'd come onto him so quickly when he had a job that didn't allow for it; she didn't need to make a fool of herself by prematurely telling him she loved him.
Besides, it sounded much nicer coming from him first. Charlotte kept her hand playing with his hair and she didn't make any sudden movements. Instead of doing anything that could have gone horribly wrong, she just smiled wide and tilted his chin up a bit to look at her, "I love you, too. Very much, for the record."

Hunter smiled when she responded and he moved back up so he could place a kiss on her lips. "Been meaning to say that for a really long time." He admitted as he laid down beside her, pulling her against him as he wrapped his arm around her waist.
"All I could think of when I was away was saying it to you. I thought it'd be a little more...romantic than this." He chuckled before shrugging. "But I've never been too good about timing."
He buried his face in her hair, breathing her in. He was glad she wasn't his ward anymore. It had been a huge struggle for him, pushing his feelings aside, seeing her face crumble every time he had to reject her advances. All he wanted to do was be with her.
And now he could. And she felt exactly the same way he did. He couldn't have asked for anything better. "I love you Charlotte Spencer." He mumbled into her hair.
