Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
She erupted into giggles again and she was pretty sure that there would be no stopping if they got onto the topic again. She shook her head and took a few more breaths, wiping the tears from the corners of her eyes. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. No more, lips are seals when it comes to that topic. I promise." She made a zipping motion against her lips and gave him a wide smile.
His question was easy and for that she was thankful. "Liquor, always liquor. Beer tastes foul, but it's good enough for a light buzz," She shrugged. Charlotte liked to think she had a pretty decent tolerance, but she was small and didn't actually know what tolerance even was. She drank frequently, but a few drinks could do her in. As he'd seen the night that she slipped out of her bedroom and out to the club.
"What job would you be terrible at?" Because looking at him, she found that she didn't actually know his personality as well as she'd thought initially. Before she'd have guessed that he could never be a babysitter, like an actual babysitter because he didn't seem the fuzzy, lovable kind. She couldn't actually picture him with a kid, but now that she had been around him longer, she wasn't sure she wanted to. She already liked him more than she wanted to.
But I don't wanna cause any pain

Hunter rolled his eyes at her reaction, though clearly amused. The nightmare didn't seem to affect her anymore, which was obviously what he had had in mind when he offered this chance to her. He smirked at her wide smile before snorting when her response came. "I guess I made a mistake on that." He said, pointing to the beer he had handed to her. But she did say it was okay for a buzz so he didn't make a move to take it back.
Her question was an easy one and he didn't have to think hard before responding. "Any kind of desk job. I had to do that when I first enlisted and I sucked, big time. I couldn't concentrate on the work at hand." His abilities made him see everything else but the work right in front of him. He gradually honed in on his abilities but it made him hate doing menial labour even more.
"What do you wanna do after you graduate?"

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
His explanation to her question made sense. She couldn't picture him as a desk guy. She'd watched him defend her and he had done so well, despite getting hurt. Thinking about him sitting in a cubicle, in a shirt and tie, surrounded by phones and computers, she struggled to picture it. Hunter didn't seem the desk job type at all. "Yeah, that doesn't fit your face. Cubicles and typing and answering phone calls. You'd have to actually be better at talking to people," She flashed him a grin and took a sip of her beer, trying not to think about the taste so much.
The next question he asked was not as easy as the first had been. Graduation was a few semesters off, more so now that she'd taken one off in order to deal with the death of her parents. She pursed her lips and her eyebrows pulled together, "I want to be a writer, ultimately. But given the fact that I'd have to be a damn good one for it to be a career, I'd settle for a Lit professor. They're always the crazy ones who talk in riddles and quote their favorite books. I could pull that off, don'tcha think?" She fluttered her eyelashes and laughed.
Charlotte narrowed her eyes, she knew she could go difficult with her questions, but she wasn't ready to dive into the hard stuff quite yet. "What's an irrational fear that you have?"

"I'll have you know, most of the people who are tied to their desks aren't good at talking to people either." He responded with a raised eyebrow. Tech support, for one, were notoriously bad at talking to people. Telemarketers are incredibly pushy and obnoxious and sometimes even condescending. "Also what exactly does fit my face, Charlotte?" He asked with a smirk.
Her answer made his smirk soften. Wynn always said the best job for her was being a publisher so that she could read books for a living. They would definitely get along quite well.
"Probably. I could definitely see you in drapy knitted sweaters and frizzy hair. Yep. I can definitely see that."
The question immediately brought all his fears, irrational and not, to the forefront. And he had plenty. "So...many." He admitted. He had a strong feeling that whatever that was said in this room wouldn't leave this room so he didn't really mind admitting to it. "Where do I even begin?" He took a swig of his beer and held a finger up. "This isn't completely irrational because those things are disease carriers but cockroaches. Did you know that if you squish them, there's a billion other things inside them that will escape and contaminate everything around it and you? That's disgusting." He shuddered.
"What was the name of your imaginary friend when you were a kid?"

I wish I was in love
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Justify your awkwardness however you like, Hunter. I know the truth," She laughed again and shook her head. Their banter was everything to her, if they ever lost it, she was pretty sure she'd be miserable. When he turned the question back on her about his face, she pressed her lips together tightly and shook her head back and forth faster. She was not about to tell him what she thought fit his face. He had a pretty face and she couldn't let him know that she thought so. Of course, she could have always played it off as a joke, but she was coming up short on what kind of joke to make.
The drapy sweater and frizzy hair comment had her giving him the finger and she rolled her eyes. At least he was being way more loose with her. There was nothing uncomfortable about the situation. While she was sitting in the middle of his bed and he was on the other side of the room, she still felt a pull towards him. Charlotte wished that he was closer, but she was doing what she could not to make it worse than it already looked.
She watched his face as he answered her question and she noted that he looked a little more vulnerable talking about his fears than she'd ever seen him. That he admitted that he had so many was shocking. She'd never expect that from him. He always seemed so collected, like he wasn't afraid of anything. Her nose scrunched at the mention of cockroaches and she shook her head back and forth, "Nope, no more. No more cockroach talk."
Charlotte scoffed, "What kind of kid did you think I was? Imaginary friends. Pfft." Her eyes darted to the side and she was smiling way too wide for it to be the truth. After a sigh she held her hands up, "Okay, okay. His name was Kingsley and he was very very proper. He sounded a lot like one of our house staff when he spoke. Think of him like...like Alfred from Batman, y'know? But he was actually this fluffy, blue blob of fluff. Like a giant pillow." She covered her mouth and squeaked, "I can't believe I just told you about that."
Composing herself, she thought more on her next question. "In high school, what would you have been voted in the senior superlatives?"

Bid farewell to yesterday
Hunter simply grinned when Charlotte mocked his response. He obviously didn't need to prove himself to her because he knew she was just joking around. Besides, she was semi accurate about the awkwardness. He really wasn't good with people; his behaviour towards Charlotte was definitely an anomalous occurrence. Even in the military, he kept to himself most of the time, only befriending one or two other soldiers along the way. It wasn't like he was anti-social. His platoon was his family, they looked out for each other but everything else seemed so personal and he avoided it at all costs.
Which wasn't at all how he was in school, funnily enough. After his parents died, he did withdraw into himself a little, pulling Wynn in along with him. But his aunt and uncle helped him gain some semblance of normality and he actually thrived in school, graduating at the top of his class. He supposed it all went to shit when he got a taste of life on the other side of his own normal in the army that made him withdraw once more.
He snapped back to the present, forcing a chuckle when Charlotte's nose wrinkled. "Oh good, I'm not the only one."
Charlotte's scoffing made him raise an eyebrow without saying anything until she continued on her own. Her answer made him purse his lips to stop from laughing out loud. It was just too adorable. He didn't say anything else before he regarded her next question. "Believe it or not, I was voted most versatile." He chuckled quietly.
"Alright, are there any secret hiding places in this house?"

"No fucking way. You? Versatile? Man, I pegged you for a 'Most likely to succeed' nerdy type or like 'Best smile.' Something completely lame," Charlotte hoped he would disregard the smile comment given that she didn't want him to know she thought he had a nice smile. She wanted him to hold onto the nerdy part, it'd just make everything easier.
Asking about hiding spots made her snort, "What kind of house do you think this is? We're not some kind of freaky deeky society that harbors fugitives or something." In short, the house was pretty straightforward. Charlotte and Will had both begged their parents to add to the layout of the house and create little passageways, but they were both outranked by the ultimate deciders. Although, with the size of the house and the many rooms, it had made playing hide and seek pretty fun growing up. Will always found the craziest places to hide and Charlotte was just lucky she was small enough to fit anywhere.

He winced slightly at her coarse language, suddenly wishing he didn't have any qualms about it. It wouldn't be much fun for them to go on like this if every time she swore, he'd have an aneurysm. But his expression changed when she mentioned that she thought he was voted Best Smile. A corner of his lips curled up before he set it at a straight line. "Nah, that only happened in private."
"Freaky deeky?" He contained his laughter between pursed lips as he nodded in amusement. She was definitely a writer.
The next question brought an affectionate smile on Hunter's face almost immediately. "Yeah, one. Wynn's three years younger than me but she acts like she's my mother." He rolled his eyes and finished his beer before walking over to the fridge to get one more beer and a bottle of water. "Hey, do you want anything else?" He asked as he thought of the next question he wanted to ask.
He walked back to his perch after she answered and took a deep breath. "Eating in or dining out? And follow up question, what kind of food for whatever answer you choose?"

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte raised her hands, "Sorry, sorry. It's the Brit in me." She didn't understand what his issue with foul language was, but she couldn't always stop herself. Besides, he'd mentioned shriveling balls, so she was allowed an f bomb here and there. Still, she didn't like the way he looked at her when she did it.
Her attention turned back to him full force when he mentioned that he had a sister. A younger one at that. Her teeth sank into her lip and she turned her eyes downward. Hearing the way he talked about her made Charlotte's stomach clench. She missed having her brother around. She missed the way he used to sling his arm around her shoulders and ward off anyone that came too close to her. While his sister acted like his mother, Will had always been the one that took care of her. Charlotte shook her head when he asked if she needed anything else. The beer would have to do, she tilted it to her lips again and took a longer drink.
Charlotte tried to shake off her thoughts, not realizing that her question to him would have such a hard effect on her. "Eating in. Pizza, always pizza. Eating out makes me fully aware of people catching glimpses of me eating and it makes me nervous." As if she needed anything else to be insecure about. Her mind was reeling still and she tried to think of something lighter. She didn't want to think about anything bad again. "Which celebrity or fictional character would you say is your spirit animal?"

Bid farewell to yesterday
It really wasn't her fault, everyone was allowed to talk however they wanted to talk. It was no business of his to stop them. But he couldn't quite hide his distaste any more than he can stop breathing. He was allowed his quirks, just as much as she was allowed hers. But he didn't say anything about it, just waved a dismissive hand. It wasn't worth discussing anyway.
He didn't miss the sudden drop in Charlotte's demeanour and he should have been more sensitive to her situation. He felt guilty that he held such affection towards his own sister and vice versa when Charlotte had this huge gaping hole between her and her brother. He wanted to apologise but he knew it wouldn't make a difference. He had a feeling she might not even appreciate the sympathy.
Hunter chose to draw his focus on her answer to his question, actually understanding her anxiety. He didn't feel that personally but he was always nervous when attention was on him. His line of work always forced him to blend in so it made him paranoid whenever people actually spotted him.
Her question made him laugh and shake his head. "I don't think I have one. Most of the things I watch or read have way too fantastical characters so I'm always removed from them."
He was slowly loosening up. She probably realised how much different he already was, a little alcohol in him and his inhibitions were already lowered.
"If you could live anywhere besides here, where would you wanna go?"

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte spent her time watching him, observing him. He was so vastly different from what she'd initially thought of him. Although he was rigid, he was funny. While he was quiet, he was smart and he was sweet. She'd known that he was strong, but she didn't realize how deep it went. During their game, she was starting to see him as a person and not as her brother's employee. They were friends, she believed they were friends, but it wasn't easy being friends with him because she wasn't allowed to know him further than this. She wasn't even supposed to know him like this.
It was driving her crazy that he was still on the opposite side of the room, but she couldn't ask for him to come closer. Just because she was screwed up didn't mean that she could ask him to comfort her every time that she was hurting. Charlotte nodded in response to his question and her lips turned up at the side. The question he asked in return was one that she'd been thinking about a lot. With Will's constant reminder of how little he wanted to do with her, she had already started looking at other places to go. Whether she'd have to transfer colleges or not, she was willing to risk it.
If she were going to answer with the first thought that came into her mind, she would have said anywhere that wasn't this house would suffice, but that was depressing and she didn't want to say it out loud. "Greece, I want to move to Greece."
Charlotte tipped back the beer bottle and finished it off, lowering it and keeping her hands wrapped around the bottle to keep them from fidgeting. "What is something that you have doubts about?"

Bid farewell to yesterday
Charlotte's answer caused Hunter to frown slightly. It hurt that he knew why she wanted to be far away from her own home. It made him feel a little pissed that her brother was this neglectful towards her. They had suffered the same loss, what gave him the right to shut her out this way?
He looked over to her and all he wanted to do was close the gap between them. He wanted to comfort her even though he knew that if he did, he would only give her false hope that this could go any further than tonight. It wasn't fair to her. Then again, he shouldn't have opened the door for her in the first place. He was already in way over his head.
The questions just got heavy and Hunter couldn't help but sigh softly. This was where his regret started to kick in but he knew if he backed out now, she'd close up and whatever they had built the past few months would vanish just like that. He'd already given her free reign, it would just be shitty of him to back out.
"Everything, will that do?" He responded, chuckling to himself. "I mean, my self doubt isn't so crippling that it stops me from living my life but it's enough for me to be aware of the fact that nobody else should be party to it." He wasn't trying to be subtle but he did hope she didn't take it the wrong way.
"What would you say to your brother if he were willing to listen to you one day?"

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte's smile was a little more genuine when she let out a light laugh at his response. She understood what he meant. The way she doubted herself was almost crippling enough for her to stop living her life, but her stubbornness was what made her keep going at full force. She'd only started doubting herself after her parents died, given that her whole life had flipped completely. Before that, she'd had plenty of encouraging people in her life that made her doubts seem silly and they eventually went away.
And the last bit she took the way she needed to. He didn't want to get into his doubts and she wasn't going to pry into them any further. She nodded slowly and her fingers tapped against the bottle lightly. With a deep breath, she pulled her hair over her shoulder and looked down, "I'd tell him that he's a coward that shouldn't have pretended to be a decent brother for the first twenty years of my life." She didn't like that their questions were taking a hard turn, but she supposed it was inevitable given that she had as much baggage as she did.
She chewed on her lower lip and shook her head, "Why did you take this job? And how much information on me did you have...before you took it?"

Bid farewell to yesterday
Charlotte's words were understandably harsh. Hunter didn't think Will should be given a pass for being absent in Charlotte's life. He just hoped, for Charlotte's sake, that Will took it the way it was intended and didn't lash out or close himself off even further if they did get the chance to air things out.
The urge to go over to the bed reared its head again and Hunter sighed. He stood up and hesitated for a moment before walking over to the bed and sitting on the edge. He took a deep breath and sighed when the questions came. He didn't even think to point out that that was two questions.
"I didn't so much take the job as it was forced on me. Our unit was sort of special ops and what we can do as a civilian remains far and few in between. It was either this or private contractor and I didn't want to be too far away where I can't see my family." He answered. The second part was a lot easier to answer though. "Not much. I was told I'd be guarding an heiress."
Hunter adjusted himself so he could lean against the headboard with one leg on the floor while the other folded under him. "Did you ever want to be police officer or a fire fighter when you were a kid?"

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
When he moved closer and sat on the edge of the bed, she did what she could not to linger on watching him. The proximity was nice, she could feel the bed shift beneath him, even if she couldn't feel him. Charlotte felt a little better having him closer. Especially with the topic of her brother being brought up again. When he worked on answering her question, she kept her eyes on the bottle in her hands.
The answer he gave made sense. Who would want to be taken from the family? Charlotte hated it, but she realized that if she'd been younger and had to be taken away from Will, she'd have thrown a fit. Now she was searching for ways to get away from him. It was sort of funny that she couldn't figure out which she wanted more. That he had such little information about her was comforting. He hadn't known about her family, or her brother or anything of importance. He didn't get a chance to know because he'd had to take the job. "Heiress makes me sound so prissy."
His question made her scrunch her nose and she shook her head, "Never. I'm too scared to try and save someone's life. I can't handle the consequences of it. I wanted to be a doctor, but that was only after I found out that Will was interested in being one, too." She shrugged, she'd idolized him when she was young, it only made sense that she'd want to do everything that he did. "Do you have any distinguishing marks? Like a tattoo or scar or something?"
