Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte's lips twitched in amusement at the thumbs up. She felt bad for wanting to laugh, but she'd never seen Hunter like this before, she hadn't even thought he drank that much. In hindsight, she supposed he had though given the fact that she'd only had one. She gave him a sympathetic smile when he stood up and she nodded slowly, "Much better than the first attempt. Looks like I slept a little better than you did, too. Are you sure you're okay?"
He walked past her and she swatted at him with a laugh when he ruffled her hair, "Could you not?" She pulled the ponytail out and left her hair pulled over her shoulder, happy that it wasn't a complete mess. That was one of the only times she felt she could be thankful for having straight hair naturally.
Charlotte took a few steps back into his room and she folded her arms across her chest, "I'd love to. Think you can handle anything more than just toast?" She couldn't keep the amusement from her face anymore. She was still concerned, obviously, but he seemed to be in a good mood and she didn't want to waste it. Especially given the fact that she was in a great mood. Charlotte did her best not to dwell on her mood coming from her sleeping arrangements and waking up in Hunter's room.
But I don't wanna cause any pain

Bid farewell to yesterday
Her continued concern had him chuckling to himself. "It's just a headache, Charlotte."
Hunter laughed quietly at Charlotte's response to the hair ruffling. He also noted how soft it was, just like he'd imagined it would be.
Raising an eyebrow, he looked at Charlotte with a smirk. "I need a lot of grease, for one." He said before getting up. The headache was slowly dissipating and he gingerly walked over to his door and got out, leaving the door opened so Charlotte can come through as well.
He looked to where the clock was and winced. They'd slept in a little too long for the meal to be called breakfast. "Well, brunch it is." He said to himself as he walked over to the kitchen to find the cook already making lunch. "Smells good, Nona."
The cook turned to Hunter with a big smile. "Mr. Trudeau. Rough night last night?" She asked teasingly to which Hunter smirked. He went closer to the stove to see what she was making. "Could I throw in some bacon in that? And when I say some I mean all?" He asked with a big grin. Nona shooed him away but went over to the fridge to get the bacon out. "Lifesaver."

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
His reassurance gave her a little comfort and she grinned at him, happy to see that her birthday hadn't completely scared him away. She'd been so worried that she'd wake up to the stony figure that she'd met the first day they were introduced. Their friendship had progressed so much compared to where it started out, but was still far behind what they'd be at if he wasn't employed by her brother. All she could do was hope that later down the road once she didn't need babysat, things would change and they'd be leaps and bounds further than they were now.
She followed him out of his bedroom and peeked around in search of someone that might not be quite as forgiving of her coming from his room, but found nobody she needed to worry about. Charlotte did her best to tone down the pep in her step as she followed behind him and she gave the woman that was cooking a wide smile as she bounded in. It was kind of heart warming to see the way she was with Hunter. She'd known the cook for the better part of her life and had always adored her and her cooking skills. But to see Hunter so smiley around her as well, she thought she might faint.
Char rolled her eyes as he asked about the bacon and she slid into one of the barstools that looked into the kitchen across the island. She had always loved to watch the woman cook, wishing she could hold onto what she was seeing and put it to use, but she hadn't cooked a day in her life. The most she had done was help cut things up and prep the food and that was when her parents and Will weren't around. "Would you like anything special, Lottie?" The woman asked with a kind smile for her.
Charlotte's eyes widened at her nickname and she refused to look at Hunter to see if he'd caught it, "Oh, uh, no. The usual is good. Try to put some bacon off to the side for me though."

Bid farewell to yesterday
As he sat by the counter, watching Nona cook, her calling out to a Lottie made him turn and he found Charlotte standing by the entrance to the kitchen. He gave a surprised smile before turning back to Nona. He hadn't thought she would have another nickname but he could instantly see a tiny Charlotte being called that. His smile grew as he continued to watch the woman cook.
He kept up an easy conversation with her, bringing up her kids and her every day life. She loved to talk so Hunter listened, only asking basic questions so she didn't really have to think about them while she cooked. Once she was done, she served them both and sent one of the wait staff to send a plate up to Will.
"Are you buddies going to join you?" Nona asked Hunter who shrugged. "I don't know, actually. Did they have breakfast earlier?" Hunter asked and that launched Nona into another spiel about breakfast not really mattering if there was still food for brunch. Hunter couldn't help but laugh as she started to clean up. "Nona, go take a rest, we'll clean up later."
Nona seemed to deliberate before shrugging. "Just leave them to dry on the drying rack, I'll store them away. You're not messing up the kitchen."
"I know where everything goes though."
"You are not messing up the kitchen."
Hunter held his hands up in defense and Nona nodded briskly before disappearing, leaving Hunter and Charlotte alone in the kitchen.
Without ceremony, Hunter dug into his food.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte was a little surprised by how much Hunter knew about the cook from the short time that he'd been staying at her house. She'd known Nona her whole life practically. She'd been around for as long as Charlotte could remember, she'd watched her and Will grow up right alongside of her own children. She did what she could not to linger too long on watching the interaction, but she could see the way that Hunter was towards other people and she wondered if he felt as comfortable around her as he did around other people.
She was quiet as they ate, trying to absorb all of the events of the last couple of months that had led them to this point. Char knew that it wasn't a functional friendship so much as it was a necessary one. Her fork fished around on the plate and she chewed on her lower lip once she was finished with the little bit of food that she'd gotten. After a few more minutes of waiting, she stood up and took her plate to the sink. Rinsing it off, she started filling the sink with soapy water and she set the pans that were used in it as the water ran. While she may not have cooked a day in her life, she'd always liked helping with the dishes. Nona told her that it was a fine skill to have in case she ever decided to go out on her own.
Humming quietly to herself, she started washing the dishes that she had, engulfed in her task rather than dwelling on her thoughts. "She's my favorite person," She said eventually.

Bid farewell to yesterday
They ate in silence, with Hunter stealing glances at Charlotte to see whether she was okay. She seemed fine, like the nightmare yesterday hadn't affected her that much, which was a good thing. He didn't want her to continue being scared. But it had only been one night. He couldn't quite imagine what the next few days would be bringing with it, whether a nightmare was going to happen again or not.
He wasn't even halfway done when Charlotte walked away with her plate. He continued eating, glad for the sustenance which was surprisingly not moving back up and out. He turned when she spoke and he smiled.
"I can't imagine why." He grinned before raising an eyebrow. "So it's not me, then?"

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte glanced at him with wide eyes for just a moment after his question. Did he want to be her favorite? Charlotte could admit that he was easily making his way towards the top of the list with each day that they spent getting to know each other, but she couldn't say that he was her favorite because it would give away that she was starting to like him a little too much. It was safer to say that Nona was and honestly it would take a lot for her to give the number one spot to anybody else.
With her eyes back on the dishes, she bit her lower lip to keep from smiling and she shrugged, "I mean, you might be a close second." Char decided to give him some credit since he'd saved her life, that was a decent enough reason for someone to be second right?
Charlotte finished the few dishes that had been dirty and she set them to dry before leaning against the counter with her elbows resting on it, "I don't think you could ever knock Nona down to second though. The woman is perfect. She cooks, she bakes, she's sweet and sassy. Loving her is easy."

Hunter couldn't help chuckling at Charlotte's response. "Why would anyone knock Nona down to second?" He shook his head and finished his food before moving over to the sink to start washing his plate. "If I had a Nona, I wouldn't need anyone else." He grinned.
Once he was done washing, he put the plate on the drying rack and turned to Charlotte. "So what're your plans for the day? If you don't have any, you wanna try those self defense training again?" Hunter asked as casually as possible. He didn't want to spook her again but the lessons were vital.

When he moved towards the sink, she shifted so that she wasn't in his way and instead settle for pushing herself up to sit on the counter. Nona wasn't around to scold her and neither was her mother so she did it freely without worry. Her hand clasped dramatically to her chest and she sniffled, "That hurts, ya know?" Although she believed that he could do without her even without his own Nona. Charlotte kept that thought to herself and tried not to linger on the way it weighed down on her mood.
He turned towards her and she looked up at him when he asked a series of questions. The last made her stomach clench and she gripped the edge of the counter a little tighter. Char knew that she needed to learn, especially with the way her nightmares were wearing on her and making her more paranoid than ever. It had been weeks since they tried, by this point, she hoped she was over it enough to learn how to prevent the attack next time, or at least hold her own.
With her eyes cast down, she nodded slowly before lifting her eyes back up to his, "Do you think I can do it this time?"

"But Nona is everything! What more do I need?" He responded with a chuckle.
He watched as Charlotte contemplated his question. He knew what she was going through, or at least partly. He just wished she knew how capable she was doing anything she set her mind to. Just because she had one minor setback didn't mean she was going to fail forever. All she could do was try and try again.
That had been what he had to do. He luckily had Damian to push him to get over the whole ordeal but it didn't mean he didn't get panic attacks. They just occurred rarely now.
The nod had him smiling and he patted her knee encouragingly. "I'm sure of it." He nodded. "Why don't we take a shower and then I'll meet you out at the gardens? If you've got workout clothes, it's better. Don't want you to overheat in sweats."

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
The pat on her knee damn near made her melt. It was more than just the physical contact, but she was reveling in his confidence in her. She'd been lacking self-confidence for months, so it felt good to have it from someone else. It was better coming from someone like him.
While she was dwelling on his reassurance, she didn't miss his next words. Charlotte's eyes widened and she pressed her lips together firmly to keep from erupting into giggles. Once he finished his instructions, she straightened her face and nodded, "Uh, well, slight problem with that plan. While I'm real appreciative of you letting me hog your bed last night, I uh, I don't think we're close enough to shower together. Not that it wouldn't be fun, but, I just think that might be a bad idea given your job and all." She waggled her eyebrows at him before scooting off the counter and landing on her feet.
"I know, I know, I'm going. I'll meet you out back, teach," She grinned at him easily and scurried off towards her room to shower and change. Charlotte focused a little more on the workout clothes that she put on, given the fact that she definitely wanted to look cute for him now. But also because she needed something light, something that wasn't going to restrain her and trigger another panic attack. Settling on a pair of track shorts and a tank top, she bounded down the stairs and out to the backyard where he'd said to meet.
As she approached the gardens, she slowed down so that she didn't seem too eager and she turned the corner to find him already out there. That was what she got for being a girl. "These kind of workout clothes okay?"

A frown displayed on Hunter's face when she said there was a slight problem to the plan. And when it dawned on him what she meant, his eyes widened. "That is not what I meant." He sputtered but Charlotte was already leaving and Hunter slapped his forehead. "That is not what I meant." He repeated before going back to his room to take a shower.
Admittedly, all he could think of was how Charlotte had twisted his words. Even as a joke, he had to realise she was getting more comfortable with him than she should. While a part of him was glad that she was getting looser in general, it just meant that the boundaries he had set was quickly crumbling.
But he still had a job to do. He had to prepare Charlotte so she could handle herself if he couldn't be around.
After laying the mats out, he began to do warm-ups just as Charlotte came up to him in proper workout clothes. He checked her out and nodded. "Could you tie your hair up? Braiding them would be ideal so it doesn't get in the way?"

When he asked her to pull her hair back, she nodded. She'd meant to do that after she got out of the shower, but as she was a little distracted, it was no surprise that she forgot. Charlotte swiftly braided her hair and let it settle over her shoulder before she folded her arms in front of her.
Charlotte could feel her stomach twisting from the anxiety as she looked around at the mats. She took a deep breath in and let it out slowly in an attempt to calm herself. She took a step forward and chewed on her lip, "So, uh, w-where are we starting?" The trembling in her tone irritated her, but she hoped that he ignored it. She wanted to believe that she was ready, just as much as he seemed to believe she was.
But the way her stomach flipped was making her unsure.

The tremor in Charlotte's voice brought a sympathetic smile on Hunter's face before he dropped it. She didn't need his sympathy. There was no reason for him to feel sorry for her. That was why they were training.
"Stretches. You always start with stretches." He said, knowing this was the easy way out. He did want her to learn something quick but there was no use rushing it. And honestly, he was still giving her an out. He had the confidence that she was able to do it but he also needed her to know that she could back out any time.
Once they were done with stretches, he moved into basic defense moves. No contact just yet because that was what triggered her. He would soon ease her into it but she needed to be okay with it first.

Waiting Game
I wish I was in love
Charlotte realized that she should have guessed stretches were going to be the first part. She could do stretching without any minor or major panic attack. It seemed a little dramatic even thinking about panicking. It had been such a long time ago, or rather, it felt like it. She shouldn't have had to worry about reacting poorly anymore. It didn't make any sense to her.
When they continued with defensive positions, she noted that he wasn't using any physical contact. Charlotte also thought about the last time they'd tried and the meltdown that she had when he circled around her. It made sense thinking about it, but she kept quiet as he taught her the basics. After a while, she stopped and folded her arms across her chest, "Okay, what good is this going to do me? Shouldn't we be getting to the more, I dunno, important stuff? Like actually defending myself against someone?"
Char tried to put out a confidence in her voice, but it was a silly attempt, she still sounded uncertain. "I just want to be ready...."
